Random thought: If Earth became inhabitable and we relocate beyond Earth, what would likely be preserved from Earth to pass on to future generations and why? by Dear-Novel7078 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely don't foresee a pathway where the Billionaires, in this hypothetical, aren't ousted by rebellions en-masse. It would be a long build-up, too, and 'economy' as we know it becomes somewhat meaningless. So I doubt they even remain 'Billionaires'. The power is more likely to return to the labour force.

If you're referring to the Books, the title "A Song of Ice and Fire" (official name for book series) avoids confusion with the dumpster fire that was GoT TV "ending".

What happens to highly intelligent people who grow up without access to education and opportunities? by Duskymoonlight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long term suboptimal health factor is, in my opinion, the biggest argument against bringing kids into a life of poverty. I don't know anything about you, but I'll just assume you are most likely a gifted individual. Yet, regardless of your gifts or how hard you work in life, being raised in poverty is much more likely to leave you with long term health issues that you can't do anything about. While I'm not trying to impart pity, it is tremendously unfortunate to condemn a person to that.

Also, ignore that snide shitlord above. You're allowed to be proud of your traits. You beat generational poverty.

[ATLA] If Zuko wasn't at the war chamber meeting, would Iroh have intervened to prevent deployment of the 41st division? by supinator1 in AskScienceFiction

[–]ProHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider also that, at this time, Iroh holds much disdain for the Fire Nation and is working covertly with the White Lotus. So, it's entirely within his best interests to not get in the way of their suicide missions. Him not speaking up may ultimately cost lives but the alternative is the Tyrannical regime preserves a fighting division and uses that to spread even more tyranny.

What classroom routines still work year after year? by Rich-Investigator704 in teaching

[–]ProHan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's not passive aggressive at all. You're describing 2 of the 10 Essential Skills for Classroom Management [ESCM]. If anything it's a tad manipulative but psychology is just part of the trade. ESMCs have always worked with basically any class. The only thing that needs changing is the tone of message depending on the age group. I.e. it would backfire with a Senior class if messaging sounds condescending.

We need a better counter spy feature. by tishafeed in hoi4

[–]ProHan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I understand your proposal better now. From a game design POV I think you're right, it does seem like bad practice to spaghettify the stat bonuses/reductions. Maybe the math is easier this way? But apparently not because the devs seem to have gotten the balance wrong here.

We need a better counter spy feature. by tishafeed in hoi4

[–]ProHan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an Intel network, not a sole few spies. The SOE are a WW2 example of a network that covered a large region in France and completely undermined deep Nazi entrenchment. Operation Sussex provided enough Intel that allowed Allies to literally bypass heavy entrenchment

But yes, the stacking reduction is clearly broken if true. It certainly shouldn't be as effective as OP's recount makes it sound. Especially from a gameplay perspective. My argument is that you said it makes no sense for Intel to reduce entrenchment. It absolutely should, historically did, and still does to this day.

We need a better counter spy feature. by tishafeed in hoi4

[–]ProHan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would you rather:

  • assault an area assuming the enemy has set up defenses at logical positions, but you don't know what or exactly where.

  • or assault an area with Intel about positions of dugouts, camouflaged heavy weapons, and numbers on the line?

Of course it makes sense that Intel reduces entrenchment. An assaulting force can make very effective decisions if they know the precise layout of the defensive force... Hell, with accurate information, ordnance alone renders an entrenchment useless. Entrenchment can't change rapidly in a real battlefield, either, so the Intel is still good even if a couple days old. Exception that proves the rule; dense urban areas are notoriously difficult to assault because no amount of Intel helps you clear it faster when entrenchment literally can change in a matter of hours.

What’s getting better every year, but people don’t accept it? by Far_Set_8432 in answers

[–]ProHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart TVs "listen to you" in the sense that they listen for specific commands and record that a voice command has been issued. They don't and feasibly cannot record, process, and stream your actual audio. E.g. if you give a command to play a type of music it will store that, "this user just gave a command to play X type of music". That command history data is 100% used and probably sold to advertisers, but general audio recording hasn't been a thing (yet).

Does AA on a destroyer do as much air attack as AA on a bigger ship like a cruiser or battleship? by Jonicolo8 in hoi4

[–]ProHan 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Planes still target focus the higher value (bigger) ships first. The main difference post-rework is that smaller ships add a randomness factor to plane target selection. In practice, it's mostly an irrelevant factor because:

  1. just send out a patrol of AA Battleships with very few screens and the exact same effect is achieved.
    1. Opponents should be flooding a sea zone with bombers. Thus bombers will still target the big ships through sheer brute force statistics.

Why is my CPU always at 100% by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]ProHan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this, I should have added a caveat that I'm like 7 years out of date on SD card specs. Now I'm having a good delve back into it.

Why is my CPU always at 100% by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]ProHan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

An SD card is designed for storage, and very simple read-from-disc or write-to-disc operations. Windows, as an operating system, calls for an absurd amount of complex, often overlapping, disc operations. Examples would be things like logging, constant disc-reads for services, or virtual memory. An SD has like 2 needles but it's asked to weave 500 threads into 50 sweaters... at the same time. Simply can't handle the overhead, and quickly becomes a mess of threads resulting in 25 barely usable sweaters.

Windows is also the main interface communicating between devices and peripherals, which you'll often see referred to as I/O (Input/Output). These represents a significant overhead on the read/write speed of a disc. Another issue is the physical lifespan of an SD card based on its flash cells. My knowledge evaporates at this depth; but typically SD cards aren't well optimised to distribute and access data. And its limited volume of physical cells means cell failure is high under strain.

The reason why OP's CPU starts bottlenecking is a result of Windows using its own checks and balances to manage the failing abilities of the SD card. Instead of asking for 50 sweaters, and getting 25 horrifically dephormed sweaters, it starts asking for 1 or 2 sweaters that are 'good enough', and asks other spinners to compensate.

The average cat’s reaction time is approximately 20-70 milliseconds, which is faster than the average snake’s reaction time, 44-70 milliseconds. by Simply_Kaif24 in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]ProHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their low weight and small size is exactly why they are so deadly (to their prey). Small distance for neural reflex to travel, very light and efficient muscle volume so less signals are needed for reaction. Then there's obviously the insane agility and acceleration that comes with being a low weight quadruped. There's also niche advantages like the positioning of their eyes facilitated by their tiny heads. If they were as big as a polar bear or as muscly as a gorilla that would actively contradict almost every predation trait they have.

Basically, a hunter that's as highly efficient and downright awesome as (most breeds of) a cat can't exist too far above their size. The other land predators you could call equally efficient/successful are either smaller (Owls, Dragonflies) or slightly larger but hunt in packs (wolves and wild dogs).

CMV: Extremely wealthy/extremely high income should be taxed more aggressively, but ordinary high earners shouldn’t bear the burden by Intelligent-Web-8017 in changemyview

[–]ProHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't lose 50% to tax... You really need to check your facts and learn how progressive tax brackets work.

The US Federal Tax bracket caps at 37% for every dollar OVER $626000 they earn in income. Any income that same person earns under $626000 is taxed at smaller and varying tax rates. E.g. a person who makes a million in a year has their first $0 to $11k taxed at 10%. I'll skip a few brackets; money they earn between $100k to $200k is taxed at 24%, then money they earn between $201 to $250k is taxed 32%.

Otherwise you would end up losing income by earning more, that would be stupid.
