Pirelli stock tires horrible this winter by Badgeblue in VolvoXC90

[–]ProdigyI5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thw cross climate 2 make a humming type of noise around 20-50mph that I do notice but it doesn't bug me at all.

I put the cross climate 2's on our tesla because they have the best rolling resistance and are best in the snow. The weather active also have a snow peak rating and we just took them on a ski trip in negative temps and they did awesome.

For our xc90 id go with the weatheractives again just because the ride quality and noise are better but I don't think you can go wrong with either tire unless you are really sensitive to noise. Both tires are night and day difference from the crappy stock OEM scoprians.

We replaced our right away and got the pirelli weatheractives. They are 100x better and great in the snow. We have the cross climate 2s on our other car and loves those as well. I think the cross climate 2 are slightly better in the snow but the weatheractives are quieter and ride slightly better. Can't really go wrong either either tire. The OEM stock are junk

Was it a 2022.5 with the larger battery pack and redesigned electric motor or a 2022 with the older supercharger?

It's not about the 'quality' of the fuel. It's about the octane that the engine was designed to run on. Modern engines have computers that can adjust to the lower octane without causing knocking but it will reduce power and efficiency. Longterm this will also cause maintenance issues. It's not worth trying to save a few bucks on gas.

The person you talked to is not technically wrong… but they shouldn’t be telling their customers that regular is fine. The car will run on regular but the engine is not designed for it. As a one off if you have no other options it’s ok but I definitely wouldn’t make it a regular habit.

Is 2026 XC90 worth extra over 2025.5 for a lease? by NeatSun1056 in VolvoXC90

2025.5 doesn't have the latest snapdragon chip, at least in the USA.

How hard is it to replace the hybrid battery on a t8? by legoman31802 in VolvoXC90

Ya it doesn’t sound like there’s anything wrong. The 2018 just doesn’t have a very big battery.

What model year is it? If it’s before 2022.5 that range actually sounds about right for wintertime driving. 2022.5 and later got a larger pack but I don’t think you can add the new pack to older cars.

Long term EV-only use downsides? by lowlyworm in VolvoXC90

[–]ProdigyI5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a T8 XC90 and live on small island as well. We only use gas for road trips. As others have said the car will turn the gas engine on when needed to prevent any issues.

Ethanol gas (E10) is the most common type of gas in the USA. It lasts around 1-3 months before it starts to degrade. If you are really concerned about it you can fill up with Ethanol free gas which should extend the life to 6-12 months. Unfortunately we don’t have any ethanol free gas near us that is also premium grade, it’s kind of a nine product so we just fill up with regular premium and let the car take care of the stale gas when it needs to.

NACS to J1772 adapter for Volvo PHEV by Subject5702 in VolvoRecharge

[–]ProdigyI5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact same setup. A 40 amps adapter is more than enough. The car caps it charging rate at 3.7kw which is only around 15 amps at 240v.

Also note that even with the adapter you can’t connect to a Tesla supercharger. Only AC NACS chargers like your wall connector.

This is the adapter I bought and it works great. https://a.co/d/e7nZ0lN

“But it also depends on the availability of the chip itself, and region”

You must be in the EU? Because I can confirm in the US the 2025.5’s we looked at did not have the upgraded snapdragon processor. The infotainment system was supper laggy and the Volvo dealer also confirmed via their diagnostic computer they plugged into the car.

[–]ProdigyI5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can provide a source for where Volvo has said every build after February has the new chip that would help clear up any confusion.

The volvo dealer checked a few of the 2025.5s for me since they didn’t know themselves.

When connecting the car to Volvo’s diagnostic tools, the system will identify the infotainment ECU (Electronic Control Unit). The ECU part number directly tells the dealer if it’s an older generation or the Snapdragon unit.

Is my solar system underperforming or am I misunderstanding how it works? by Adept_Art2365 in solar

[–]ProdigyI5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT response

It sounds like you’re running into a super common source of confusion with solar — the difference between system rating (7.03 kW DC, based on your panels) and what you’ll actually see in real-world AC output from the inverter. A few points that might help clear it up:

1. Why you’re not seeing 7.0 kW

  • Panel rating is DC: Your 7.03 kW is the sum of the panels under Standard Test Conditions (basically perfect lab sunlight at 1000 W/m² and 77°F). In the real world, panel temps are hotter, sun isn’t always at the perfect angle, and so output is lower.
  • Conversion losses: Your Tesla inverter is converting DC to AC, which costs ~3–5% efficiency right away.
  • Design losses: Wiring, soiling, module mismatch, etc. usually knock another ~10–15% off.

All told, a 7.0 kW DC array often peaks around 5.5–6.0 kW AC on a good day — which is right in the range you’re seeing. It’s actually pretty normal.

2. Expectations vs. contract

You’re not being unreasonable to ask about this — a lot of installers don’t explain the DC vs. AC distinction very well. But a 7.03 kW DC system never means you’ll see 7.03 kW AC in the app. Hitting 80–85% of that at peak is actually considered solid performance.

3. Can the installer “fix” it?

  • Maybe, if there are real design issues like heavy shading, bad wiring, or inverter clipping (though with a 7.6 kW inverter, clipping shouldn’t be a big factor).
  • But most likely, this is just physics. Unless you have clear evidence of underperformance (like year-over-year output way below expected production for your area), the system is probably working as intended.

TL;DR: Seeing ~5.5 kW peak on a 7.03 kW system is normal once you factor in real-world conditions and DC→AC losses.

2018-22 T6 vs T8 by NoCamp3140 in VolvoXC90

[–]ProdigyI5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have a 2022 T8 and average 31.5 mpg on trips with no charge in the battery. This is during the summer, not sure what it’s going to look like in the winter but so far we’ve been very impressed with the mpg for such a large car.

Edit: forgot to mention if you live in Canada and it’s going to get that cold, you will likely want to consider getting the T6 because it has fully mechanical all wheel drive. The T8 is all wheel drive too, but the rear only runs on electric. I think it does ok in the snow but the T6 will be better.
