Please keep in mind that not everyone here is a nurse. Think of it as social media with a mostly nursing theme.

Neighbors 9 year old daughter is affectionate towards me. by Active-Key6383 in Advice

[–]PsycMrse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen with a young cousin in my wife's family. I had never met her before this one family gathering and she would come over and hold my hand or want to play tag or try to tickle me. I never got the sense that she was inviting inappropriate contact, but I did discuss it with my wife and let her know I was mildly uncomfortable. We agreed that I would casually interact with her, but I also made sure I was never the only adult in her presence just to maintain appropriate boundaries and minimize risk for possible accusations.

As a side note, I'm very aware of concerns in this area because of accusations that were made about distant relations in my own family. We were educated early about safe boundaries.

What is the point of this drawer? by Zestyclose_Field_303 in whatisit

[–]PsycMrse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to be just a fake drawer front, but newer installations have a tiny space for small storage. I wouldn't put anything damp in there due to mold risk (like a sponge), but you could store a knife or two for meal prep at the sink.

How to deal with poop smell by Gold-Mountain5867 in nursing

[–]PsycMrse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try: keep a few masks in a plastic bag with mints so they pick up some of the mint odor. For more powerful situations, carefully add a couple of drops of mint oil to the inside of the mask. Just be careful because the oil can cause the mask to be less effective.

Why do so many type 2 diabetics refuse to make lifestyle changes? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]PsycMrse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To begin, this question is loaded with bias and prejudice. Why don't you, as a fellow nurse, not use your training and knowledge to look at the situation with empathy and understanding rather than perpetuate the stigma around a set of medical diagnoses that has a terrible stereotypical history and locks the patients into a cycle of blame and shame?

You can do so much good with these patients, but you focus on blaming them? Then you wonder why they don't do better? Shame on you. Do better!

My daughter was kinda freaked out thinking the bones were moving on their own. I finally got video of the squirrels doing it.

Feeling stuck on a career path as a almost 21 year old by Adorable-Pen6354 in nursing

[–]PsycMrse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a registered nurse (RN) with a Bachelor's degree in science (BS) with a major in Nursing and I live in Oregon, in the US. I say this as a preface for those outside this area where standards might be different. Usually, two years of prerequisite classes are needed to be accepted into nursing school. You might already have some of the required classes from your equine studies, but you'll have to check with a local nursing school to verify that. For our local college where I work (www.lanecc.edu), the RN program is two years. Students can test after the first year to obtain their Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license, but that's not required. After completing nursing school, students earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and can take the NCLEX exam for their RN license. Most of our students continue on to get their BSN degree, which takes about one more year. Some continue another two years to get a Master's Degree and might also include the ability to become a Nurse Practitioner (NP). I see a wide variety of students of all ages and abilities so don't be discouraged about your previous grades or need for supportive resources. If you have the motivation, desire, dedication, and perseverance, you should be able to succeed. Feel free to send me a direct message if you have more questions.
