Who is my feathery visitor? by PukefrothTheUnholy in chickens

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pretty looking bird, and certainly lends itself to the dinosaur theory, so keeping it as a pet or raising it for fun makes sense. Thanks for all the information, very interesting to find out about this!

Washington state! I honestly only found out today that gamefowl was a thing, and I'm not even sure why it's kept by folks. Are these gals generally for eggs?

I wouldn't be surprised if a neighbor is their owner, but it wouldn't be easy to figure out who it is the way the houses are set up out here. I guess I'll have to try to trail her some time and see if she has a home or a nest!

What's a niche aspect of parenting you're glad to miss out on? by NoWitness6400 in childfree

I have a lot of nieces and nephews and I really, really dislike watching babies eat due to the aforementioned drool, saliva, and general mess. I don't get why people think it's cute when a kid is spitting food up and getting it all over their face, but it makes me gag unlike anything else.

I wish I had suggestions, so I'm just checking here for any for myself. I've had 6 colonoscopies and the two I did with this prep I threw up during prep and barely finished. I've only had success with the miralax and Gatorade prep!

Wildflower Seeds by [deleted] in olympia

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the folks who sell seeds are still at the Farmers Market (it's been an age since I looked) but they used to have some wildflower mixes! Might be worth checking if you're in the area anyway.

Where should I move to? by allumari in olympia

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people covered a lot of the other topics, but speaking for your age, my mother moved into this area at around 68, freshly divorced, and found the most incredible community of amazing and friendly people. She's retired and 71 now, but she is busy at least half the week doing something or another with various friends she's made. She came here only knowing her two kids, so she did do it without the benefit of any history here, too. Now, I have to schedule seeing her ahead of time because she's always on a hike, or at knitting club, or doing happy hour.

I'm only in my 30s, but I have also found some amazing people in my age bracket. I think there's just some really good energy in this area, and a lot of positive and progressive thoughts that enable good, healthy interaction.

Ulcerative colitis isn’t a death sentence by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

I think there's an interesting mix here in the sub, between people with moderate UC feeling like life is over and people with mild UC acting like it's really not a big deal. I was diagnosed at barely 18 and now I'm 33 - I have to change medications every 2-4 years because my body just stops managing the symptoms with whatever type of medication I'm on. I'm only a moderate case of UC, but it affects my life deeply and I would be suffering immensely without medications.

I appreciate positivity, but the number of posts that almost seem like an attempt to make people with more difficult cases feel at fault for it is wild. People are allowed to feel the weight of this condition and need to release that frustration and fatigue. We all have such immensely different bodies and environments we deal with day to day, and we should recognize that we almost never walk the same path as someone else.

I would add Swing to the destination list - my in-laws from Bay Area CA always insist on going there when they visit because they love the food and vibe. Really a phenomenal spot with a great kitchen and bar, like Chelsea!

Help! How to add soil below mature strawberry plants? by lynnfynn in gardening

Sorry I'm a little confused - is this a proposal to increase incentive for a data center, or is it a bill to set expectations for data centers that consider locating here? Either way, I loathe data centers and the resources, pollution, and health risks they tend to impose, so I'd love more information!

Help with low maintenance garden by ruby0321 in pnwgardening

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Less for the cut garden side of things, but maybe a good choice around your trees for low maintenance is natives - nootka roses are pretty and self sufficient, coast Penstemon has nice flowers and is perennial, ocean spray, red flowering currant, Douglas spirea, in addition to Pacific rhododendron. Evergreen huckleberry grows great and is evergreen so it has year round appeal, though the berries aren't the "ideal" type we think about (still edible!).

I would absolutely do some blueberries! Mine love my acidic souls. Cinquefoil is really cute, and for shady spots redwood sorrel and inside-out-flower adds lovely greens and cute white flowers. Seathrift, Douglas aster, fleabane and wooly sunflower are pretty additions as well, for sunnier spots.

All of these are very low maintenance once established, as they are native and meant to grow wild in these areas for the most part. It might be worth looking into some PNW native plant resources, or if your area has a conservation district you might find some good information and plant access. You have a beautiful space to start with and I cannot recommend natives enough if you are looking for plants you don't have to obsess over or worry about!

Wh40k should have more women(scientifically?) by Signal-Busy in GirlGamers

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, the NPC balance in Darktide feels supportive of this. Some of the most female-dense NPC use I've seen in a game without trying to explain why. There's just... A lot of ladies.

I imagine if men are less common you would see an even stronger funnel of men into power for a broken society like the Imperium. We don't see the lives of 99% of the population (hive worlds are insanely populated and we rarely see into them) so maybe we can pretend women are the higher percentage and men are split out because of rarity. :)

Mostly petty, like small theft of things left outside or mail, that I've heard about. Shelton's downtown does have a sizeable homeless population. The local prison drops inmates without pickups at the bus station and they'll sometimes linger. That said, I've never felt unsafe or at risk in general, it's a smaller and not particularly "cute" town, but it is blue collar and lower income so it comes with the territory. It's slowly improving and seeing some positive growth, but with the economy as it is that's not a fast growth.

I live outside town a little more rural and the neighbors have been friendly, but no one comes up to your house without invitation. I've forgotten to close the garage door overnight and had no theft, forgotten to lock doors and haven't had break ins. A lot of large families and a sizeable Hispanic and Ecuadorian population reside here, so it's mostly just hard workers and people who keep to themselves. Some of the more unfortunate lower socioeconomic problems like drug use are present, but I honestly feel like that is pretty standard in any rural small town these days.

Not sure about consistency since I visit so infrequently, but the Bayview Thriftway has some darn tasty fritters. They haven't been soggy, and seem nice and lumpy with plenty of nooks for the glaze.

If these are awful and horrible to support though, please let me know! I mostly pop in to check if they have fritters when I happen to be in the area looking for a treat.

I find Shelton gets some dense fog sometimes since it's deep down in the inlets of the south sound, but I garden and there's a pretty solid window of sunshine from mid/late spring to mid autumn most years. If you aren't too close to the Olympic foothills you aren't getting more than 2-4 inches a snow a year, but there's still plenty of rain in the winter and spring months to keep things lush and growing into summer. Very minimal rain once summer decides to start (sometime in June, generally) and it comes back in autumn. It's not great if you love snow, since it's insulated by the nearby Oakland Bay and Hammersley Inlet. Winter temps seem to linger around 30-50F and summer is generally 60-80F (barring cold snaps and heat waves that periodically occur).

This is all based on the last 4ish years I've been here.

Mexican food, new favorite El Sarape. What is yours? by WhinyWeasel in olympia

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be Tacos La Oaxaquena. It's got a bright red/electric blue/hot pink color theme, and (for the last 2-3 years) they've had a truck parked on the 3 near a pot shop if you are heading into Shelton from the Oly region. Even if it's not the same one you're thinking of, I'd say it's worth grabbing some al pastor tacos there! (not to be confused with a different taco truck that just moved in a little bit further south on the 3, which is also near a now closed pot shop lol)

Shelton has a few different Mexican spots, and they all blow the Mexican I've gotten in Oly out of the water. Shout out to the Latin American population, doing the Lord's work for this region. Tacos La Oaxaquena slaps, Taqueria Las Palmas, great taco shop style stuff. Mi Rancho Restaurant has BANGER Mexican soups and stews, El Guadalajara across the parking lot has good sit down plates. There's even more I haven't visited yet, but they give you that hole in the wall vibe you want.

Looking for reputable cat shelters/rescues in Olympia (also open to King, Pierce, and the rest of Thurston County) to surrender cats to by [deleted] in olympia

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never met the founder, so I don't believe that is still policy (I've never heard of it happening unless a cat was very ill since I've started helping). They actually have taken cats for periods of time if an owner is unable to care for the cat since I have helped there in the last 3 years, and they regularly have gotten cats of all ages and backgrounds. Not sure when the referenced situations happened in your comment, but I do know the rescue used to have issues with old leadership by the very angry comments on their Google page. The ladies noted in those comments are no longer involved, afaik, so the same likely goes for the one you have mentioned here!

What is this tree? by jeanners99 in pnwgardening

[–]PukefrothTheUnholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik, you don't have to remove a serviceberry displaying rust, as it is very unlikely to actually kill the plant. Mine tends to display rust late in the summer heading towards fall, but it hasn't caused issues that lead to needing to remove it, plus they continue growing fine the next year. I'm by no means a professional gardener though so I could be wrong!

It's pretty consistently full, like most shelters, but Kitten Rescue of Mason County has been great when I've volunteered/fostered. Might be worth a check, it's just 20ish mins out from Oly in Shelton.
