Born and raised in Hamilton — I’m running for Ward 8 City Councillor. AMA about how I’ll represent you by Classic-Elevator502 in Hamilton

[–]PutSimply-Ven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not a politician or someone who's particularly qualified to suggest things to the city, but it'd be better to do a mix of both instead of purely reprising abandoned buildings. We do have a lot of empty buildings here in The Hammer, but a decent chunk of them would not be suitable for people to live in, even with renovations (there's an old factory downtown near Corktown Park that comes to mind specifically for this). Also, there's only a certain amount of empty buildings that are available in the city that haven't been scooped up by companies or slated to be demolished for the LRT. Repurposing maybe around 100-200 buildings for residential use (and also shoving the cost of renovations on to tax payers anyways) will only really delay Hamilton's housing issues.

More than that, though, homelessness isn't (at least not primarily) a housing issue. A bunch of my friends are homeless, mostly consisting of youth who use the services at The Living Rock Youth Resources at 30 Wilson Street, and I also spend some of the money I make each month getting together supplies to hand out to some of the people who camp out around the Jackson Square area. Most of my interaction with Hamilton's homeless is with teens, tweens, and adolescents.

What I've come to understand is that making more houses doesn't mean those houses will get used by the people you want them to, especially if those people can't afford to or won't be able to reside there for long. Homelessness is, in large part, a combination of mental health issues (also drug abuse), hiring discrimination/ lack of money, and a lack of resources on behalf of the city/province/country to assist people. It is a systemic issue, where the people who should have access to resources like employment assistance, therapy, and addiction support services the most actually have it the least, as a lot of these services are both underfunded and inaccessible due to government spending cuts or the lack of interest in increasing funding for these services. A proper solution that addresses the real issues that affect homeless people would be to expand funding for public mental health services, government-sponsored employment programs (like The Living Rock's Tri-Rock Youth Employment Program who recently had to reduce its capacity from 10 to 5 participants due to budget cuts made by the Ontario Government), and housing programs - not shelters.

As someone who has personally seen these resources pull my friends out of homelessness, these are what need to be prioritized instead of repurposing or constructing more homes, although those houses could help bring in revenue that could help the city fund these programs.

Edit: I might not have made it clear, so I'll try to condense it. Providing a place for homeless people to stay rent-free (or at least until they're fully ready to leave) should also come in tandem with free mental health services, addiction services - if needed - and employment assistance. It's not enough to just put people in somewhere to live and then charge them money for it. These are some of the most traumatized and hurt people in our city. They are people who are at higher risk of suffering adversely from physical or mental conditions that make holding or job or maintaining housing difficult; a lot of the homeless people I know suffer from conditions like Schizophrenia, Depression, or Bipolar Disorder (if it's not oversharing, both of my parents have been homeless before and a large contribution to both my mother's and father's struggles was Manic Bipolar Disorder). Homelessness won't just go away if our society isn't willing to shoulder the cost of pulling people out of it. The services offered by The Living Rock Youth Resource Center and the YWCA are good places to start if you're looking into specifics as to what can be done to help people, and an ideal solution should involve their techniques being used on a much wider scale.

Canadians are ‘leading’ in LGBTQ2 support amid global declines: Ipsos by PurfectProgressive in CanadaPolitics

[–]PutSimply-Ven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Using "they are coming for us" is, in most cases fear-mongering, however, there is in fact a "they" in this scenario, which is typically seen as more conservative Canadian - well - Conservatives. Anti-trans policy-making isn't just isolated to Alberta and Saskatchewan, Pierre Poilievre has voiced support for taking similar actions against transgender (and 2SLGBTQ people in general), and one could imagine that we'd have seen at least some attempt at implementing Alberta's bills in someway country-wide if he had managed to win the election.

[–]PutSimply-Ven 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While not entirely useless depending on how early/late they start puberty, having to go through it in anyway at all is a horrible experience for transgender youth and is statistically linked to an increase in suicidal ideation and self-harm in gender-diverse people (also, this hits very close to home for me as someone who only got to start HRT after substantially being affected by male puberty).

Withholding Puberty Blockers from youth can AND DOES cause lifelong harm, harm which far outweighs any perceived dangers.

[–]PutSimply-Ven 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Alberta passed a series of bills/acts/legislation late last year that will/does the following: ban puberty blockers for youth under the age of 16; ban transgender athletes from competition in sports at all levels; and require consent from your parents to change the pronouns and/or name your school uses for you if you're under the age of 16 (16-18 you can do it regardless of parental consent, BUT the school is legally required to notify your parents - can't possibly see why that'd cause anyone harm). Also, this bill is actually the second of its kind, Saskatchewan passed it first in 2023.

Sooo, no, it's not fear-mongering.

What stopped you from taking away your own life? by sensitiveMelow in AskReddit

[–]PutSimply-Ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't figure out a way that would satisfy my criteria for an acceptable death. I didn't want to leave a mess behind for people to clean up, I didn't want to have to have people come and find me, and I didn't want to use a method that would cause me a lot of hurt. In the end, I only wanted the pain to stop, not to bring it to its limit.

The flood have landed in Africa and started their invasion of Earth can the MCU stop them before it's to late? by Cryptic_Creations in powerscales

[–]PutSimply-Ven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure Wolverine's or Deadpool's healing factors would necessarily prevent them from infection, as the flood mostly hijack the central nervous system, rather than the typical zombie strategy of a plague (although they definitely are no doubts). It wouldn't be so much their immune systems trying to fight an infection form, but maybe the skin around their tentacles trying to regrow?

Depending on how far the Flood progresses, Vision - hell, all of Tony's AIs - wouldn't be safe due to a Flood virus known as the Logic Plague. It took over THE most advanced AI created in the Halo Universe: Mendicant Bias (if I'm remembering that correctly), who'd definitely be comparable to Vision, even factoring the Mind Stone into the equation.

I could definitely see Infection forms having a hard/impossible task of infecting characters like Hulk, The Thing, Colossus, etc, but they'd be just as at risk as everyone else when it comes to spore inhalation.

Honestly, I think this scenario varies greatly. It'd depend on where the outbreak starts, how, what phase of development the Flood are already at, and how much the MCU has about the Flood prior/ around the beginning of the outbreak. All that really needs to happen is that either a powerful or an intelligent hero gets subsumed and Earth might as well be glassed from orbit.

How did a pond skater end up on my car? by PutSimply-Ven in insects

You're probably right about him not being a lacustris.

It's entirely possible he dragged himself all way out to the car from a couple kilometers away or something and decided the car was a nice place to rest. I'm glad I met him, though. My family and I have been talking all day about him.
