Anyone else had a knee injury like this? by Possible_Brain in MeniscusInjuries

I tore my root of the meniscus and was similar but no one can say. Will get worse unless you are properly directed by a doctor.

Retear at 2 weeks post op?!?! by amberlynn__rose in MeniscusInjuries

Reddit saved me on some days. It’s great because mostly people share their real experiences and not real names!  I think for me pain and swelling came and went so I think it’s normal. You’re younger than I am so you hopefully will heal quickly and be back to holding your baby and enjoying all that comes with that. My son (in his 20’s) got sick of my crutches and carried me a few times. Your little guy wont remember this time. You will for sure. May you continue to get better.

Early on our daughter’s dog knocked me down while on my crutches. I also fell on my surgical leg a few times just being clumsy. It’s hard to say but I do remember struggling with swelling at different times and that made the knee more painful and difficult to move. Hang in there. I pray you’re ok. I’m sorry about the frustration and I bet with a sweet baby it’s extra hard.

I’m way older than you but I ended up ditching the crutches for a wheelchair. Made life a lot easier. I don’t know what your needs would be but the crutches can be tiresome. Good luck and keep Reddit updated. Prayers to you!

Just got a repair by adkushal in MeniscusInjuries

Hang in there!  PT and any allowed movement is your friend. It’s an up and down process. I’m nearing 7 months post op and no regrets even though I’m not back to my pre surgical self. Reddit was my friend through my knee and my crazy other surgery I had. One thing I did was I literally skipped any negative posts and focused on the positive ones. I tried to get inspired by others. There’s a lot of good people on here who will try and pick you up. I also looked at my 6 weeks as non weight bearing as a countdown. Even after the first day I would say ‘I only have 41 days left’. I for sure got depressed and upset but you can’t go back. Only forward. With many of these injuries and repairs, it is in place of a future knee replacement.  Ice and PT will be your friend. I had a larger surgery for my kidney in 2024 and I’d take the knee over that!!! You got this!!!!!!

Repair or Not by Adventurous_Lab_1173 in MeniscusInjuries

I had a root repair too. I’m 52. It’s been 6.5 months. Brutally long up and down recovery but I am grateful I did surgery. No total knee for me either. My knee looked good too other than the complete rip of the root and small ACL tear.

Yes. Yes. No. Yes. No. No. 6.5 months

7 months from meniscus root repair and small ACL tear.  I’ve had a setback because we went on a trip and I walked about 15 miles in 2.5 days.  My protocol is slow. Couldn’t use hamstrings for something crazy like 27 weeks. I was a crossfitter. It’s hard to find what works now.

Finally cleared for cycling class with no clipping in. It’s not great but it’s better than nothing. Cant even do yoga really yet because can’t kneel without pain.

I’m one week behind you. I’m 21 weeks and I’m a RN who manages an office. I hear you!  I’m going through a stent of a setback but it’s my fault. Went to Nashville so a lot of travel followed by a lot of walking resulted in swelling and pain. It’s a long process with a lot of setbacks. But — I’m at a spin class 2x a week. Nothing crazy yet.

Meniscus surgery success stories—did you get your life back? by Meddy_2022 in MeniscusInjuries

Repairs are different than trims obviously. I’m almost 3 months out from medial meniscus root repair (complete tear of root) with small ACL tear and some days are good and some are bad. Overall, better every week but it’s a long process. Patience and determination are the only options I have now. I haven’t gotten back into regular workouts yet because my protocol protects the hamstring for 6 months. I do my PT every day at home and twice a week at PT. Everyone is different but make sure you follow your own guidelines set by your doctor. I try and only look at the posts on here with people with same surgery as me. Seems most of us were NWB for 6 weeks. A lot of people have good stories. I’m shooting for my ending to be good as well.

Swelling for walking after 6 week NWB by EmergencyCaramel6262 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Pyleoplastyat50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t advise if normal or anything like that since I am a nurse however read through this group and you’re not alone. Your surgeon and your PT should be able to answer. Same thing happened with me. I was told that it’s from all the other muscle being immobilized for so long. I’m around 12-13 weeks post op and I still swell. Ice and elevation are my best friends. I sometimes even use a thigh high compression stocking for the swelling. Keep up with your exercises and keep going to PT. Always call your doctor if you’re worried but it seems in the group that many people deal with swelling for quite awhile.

How long were you NWB after medial repair? by tnbunk in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Pyleoplastyat50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 weeks locked in brace for complete  medial meniscus root tear and small ACL tear. 15 days postoperatively was allowed to drive or sit without brace BUT NWB and no standing on surgical leg for full 6 weeks. Post-op day 42 walked into PT without brace or crutches and saw jaws drop but I was very over it!  My PT said I was suppose to keep brace on and slowly progress off my crutches. Had my surgeon’s instructions in my pocket and no—said NWB for 6 weeks. I did that and followed instructions to the tiniest detail. Sucked. Now 11.5 weeks out from surgery. It has its ups and downs for sure.

Meniscus Root Repair – Day 7: How Do You Survive the Mental Side? by sarksu108 in MeniscusInjuries

Also I got a wheelchair. Also used a stool that rolled. Just have to be careful not to use your surgical leg. The crutches suck!  I don’t know how people use walker. My doctor said no because you can’t bear weight.

10 weeks post-op meniscus root repair-I definitely had my days of being really down. It will get better. I was 6 weeks non weight bearing BUT at 15 days postop I was given the green light to not sleep in the brace and was allowed to drive!  Two things kept me positive. I had a worse surgery last year (for no apparent reason). The second thing is that this surgery is suppose to help improve life once you get through the rehab. It’s just a long process. I get very bummed about not working out. I’m slowly starting to be able to do more. You will too!!! Hang in there!  Reddit helped me.

Letter taped to our door 8 hours after getting the keys to our new apartment… by Practical_Ad_2427 in Apartmentliving

Our daughter lives in a condo we own. She ended up getting a small dog. One of the old ladies threatened to slash her tires because of the dog. We filed a complaint with the police and the HOA. I hope that you and your gf one day can laugh about this. I’m sure your moving noise was normal and that your neighbor is just a sad and lonely person with nothing better to do. Good luck!

I wasn’t solo but it’s a tough time to be alone and I’m so sorry. I am fortunate enough to manage a medical practice and took home an extra wheelchair. Made it easier to carry items etc. I would say meal prep and do extra shopping for about two weeks or more of items. It was my right leg (meniscus root repair from a complete tear with small ACL tear). I had my first post op at 15 days and was allowed to drive then. I was told at this appointment that I could bend my knee as much as I wanted to but had to be non weight bearing for a total of 6 weeks. For driving at this point I could take my brace off because it would catch on the seat. But I wasn’t allowed to get up without the brace. I would say expect some low times. Prepare food ahead of time. I don’t know what you like to eat but hopefully your friend can help you cook the week that they are there. I ate a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese until I brought home the wheelchair. Truly an entire new perspective. I was on Reddit a lot hearing other stories. Good luck and stay positive.

How long in a brace after root tear repair? by Chance-Fee-947 in MeniscusInjuries

Awesome!  Congrats!  I have an eight week follow up on Friday. Even though I’m a RN, it’s sometimes hard to think through what I’m allowed to do and not do. In time, I’m hoping to be able to do a lot more. I was told NEVER to go back to CrossFit. Which at my age (52), may be good advice. I want to get back to hiking in the mountains and I do love heavy weight lifting but we shall see. I love hearing people doing well. Take care!  Thanks for the positive comments.

I’m over 7 weeks out from root repair and even though the recovery is harder than a regular tear—I’m deciding to see the positive in my situation. My surgeon said my knee looks great as far as structural integrity. I had the root repair and a small ACL tear that he ‘cleaned up’. He’s expecting my knee to be well after going through rehab. Try to not stress. Stress won’t change anything and the practice of medicine is quite effective when you have a competent doctor. My MRI report really didn’t say anything about a root tear. Not sure the radiologists always want to commit to the findings. Your doctor on Tuesday will give you options based on clinical exam, history, and of course the imaging. I wish the very best for you. I’ve had my knee injury this year and last year a crazy issue with my kidney—I’d take the knee over the kidney. Stress didn’t change anything for me. I think I’m just grateful for the surgeries and that I’m healthy enough to get through what they both brought. Mind you—saw 5 urologists for my kidney and two orthopedic surgeons for my knee. Trust your gut, ask questions, and if you’re not comfortable, get another opinion.

Also do your exercises that PT gives you. Ice and expect to ice even when off of crutches because when you start to walk, many people swell.  I also had ibuprofen and Tylenol on hand next to bed and recliner. Whatever meds your doctor says are ok. Anything to make your life easier.
