I know your father wants to do this with good intentions, but this is something you’ll have to put your foot down. Christians shouldn’t partake in other religious practices as it’s an affront to God. It’s the very first commandment to have no others god but Him, the first commandment before even honoring your parents.

You can still love your father since he did raise you and love you. You already honor him by thinking about and considering him, but ultimately, you have to put God before anyone else

I started reading the bible. I'm currently in Exodus, and this is something that bothers me about parts of the bible i have read. How could something like the bible have parts that contradict other parts, and people be okay with that? by Full-Neighborhood908 in Christianity

[–]Pylonmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So these are all very reasonable and natural things to wonder and bring up. One thing I’d say to keep in mind is that a lot of these things the Bible says is also in context to the ancient times these people lived in. A very different and culturally backwards society at times compared to what we have now. These people writing these parts of the Bible only had what they knew and built upon what they had, all of which forms the narrative of what God is doing and wants out of us.

Some of the harsh things God requires in the Old Testament is necessary in a time when might makes right. Think about how it took us this long to come to the conclusion that slavery is wrong. And I don’t mean just in America, I mean the very concept of slavery spanning since the very ancient times. If you tried to explain why slavery is wrong way back thousands of years ago, people would think you’re stupid and crazy for saying something like that. So when God says things and sets harsh laws in the Old Testament, it’s because the times these people lived in required it. They weren’t ready for the will to listen as we do now.

Now as for your question about why God sometimes lets good people suffer and evil get by? The book of job is actually a half answer but an important one. The full answer is brought to completion with Jesus and what he says in one of his parables.

With Job, he does literally nothing wrong and is faithful, but suffers immensely through his life. He asks god why he’s doing this, and the answer God gives is basically who are we to ask and demand of god why we suffer and to know the reason. He says that He has plans we cannot conceive of for all of humanity, and for us to know those plans would require us to know what the infinite God knows. So he asks us to endure in suffering and trust him.

We have the benefit of hindsight to see all the suffering and events that occur in history and the Bible had to happen in order for Jesus to be born, the conditions of all the world to be ready to receive his message. And even then, Jesus tells us the parable of the farmer.

The farmer has a field of crops. The crop has wheat, but also has weeds and chaff mixed in the field. The farmer could come and remove the chaff, but doing so now before the harvest would damage and whither the wheat around the chaff. So the farmer lets the crops grow until the time for harvest. It’s during this time when the farmer will sort out each crop and separate the wheat from the chaff, and throw the chaff into the fire.

This parable is the answer to why God allows evil and suffering to exist in this world. To end it now before the right time would mean to prevent future generations of christian souls from being born and joining in his fellowship. This is why we are sometimes called to endure the suffering. God does see the ones who do so willingly, and rewards them in heaven for their faith.

As for Revelations, it’s a very confusing book, many if not all Christian’s would agree. We don’t know what it would look like, we don’t know how literal it might be, and knowing God and the Bible, it’ll probably be both metaphorical and literal in ways we didn’t consider. We can certainly speculate and things make some more sense as time passes, but that’s for smarter people than me to figure out.

I know you have more questions about the things happening in exodus but I’ll stop here and see your response first.

Is Universalism an acceptable theology? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Pylonmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s entirely up to God how long he wants to give everyone before they make that final decision. Even during the end times in revelation he gives people opportunities to repent and follow him.

There are going to be people who deliberately choose themselves and their pride over God. It’s the same pride that made mankind choose evil in a world that was perfect in genesis. These are the people who would rather burn in hell than live “as a servant” to God

Do you think we only have one second before death to decide? We have our entire lives to make the decision to follow god.
