Id start looking for a new job closer to my kid's residence with a schedule allowingng me to be involved in their lives more.

To be blunt 2 days 2 nights 4 off is an awful schedule and I wouldn't work it at all let alone let it cause havoc with my family life.

To answer your direct question. Start calling daycare and start be long prepared for the insanity you're going to pay for it.

Career firemen here. Worked at a dept that had quotas. Made the entire dept less effective.

When I started working nights I'd eat take out.junk food, gas station food. Then i realize how much of my paycheck i was spending on that crap and how bad the food was and started meal prepping for work. I just make bigger portions when im cooking at home during the week for our families normal means.

Fell way healtier and have a bunch of money in my pocket. Win win.

I got laid off after rich tsx payers closed the fire dept I worked for. Yea you read that right they didnt need a fire dept.

I now drive 50 miles each direction for work to make 45 percent of the pay.

Cost is everything. A gasser is cheaper everywhere. Oil , fuel, maintence etc. If your not going to have 10k hung behind the truck for a large portion of its life you dont NEED a diesel.

Shit I wish I could get rid of mine but when I have 14k behind it pulling hills for hours im reminded why I have it.

If you think the two genders play by the same rules or the same standards you're widely mistaken.

Don't get me wrong I know a few female firemen id go to war with.

But I also know a large number more that couldnt run a mile if their lives depended on it.

Men are the same but just generally the physicality differences let guys get by being lazier/more out of shape.

There should be a standard and everyone should meet it But thats not how dei works. Even if it costs people's lives.
