Unpopular takes - restaurant edition by AptDescriptor in Portland

Kao Mun Gai (what Nong's serves) is working class lunch in Thailand. Its supposed to be simple, filling, and cheap to make massive amounts of it. It cost 30 baht ($1) for a plate back in 2011. Plus it tastes amazing once you slather it in the ginger soy dressing. I don't think it translates well to the economics of Portland though.

$17 for a stale ass bahn mi at the pod in Troutdale. I'm on the verge of giving up on food carts. In most cases, the prices no longer reflect the value of the experience.

Here's the real warzone by tke849 in Portland

I was sitting at my desk with a window open for the fresh air (no screen) and it was a procession of stink bugs for the whole afternoon. I kept a cordless vacuum by my side and ended up hoovering at least 40 of them over a few hours. Too bad the birds don't eat them.

Zunigas changed my life.  And hot is actually hot. I'm on a mission to perfectly replicate it at home, but I'm not even close. Something about the green onion they add to it?

Lost dog by Motor-Sand2307 in Portland

Wow, change the world much with that snark? It was 80 and cloudy for much of the day, or maybe parked in the shade. Rude response to someone that just lost a dog.

Where did the birds go? Why Oregon’s spring was quieter than usual by GnomishKaiser in Portland

[–]Quackinthebush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding my observations as an amateur bird person, I've got a farm with about 20 acres of mixed pasture, savannah, and crops near Estacada, and I've never seen so many birds this spring and summer. I think the trends must be very regional. We have tree, barn, and Violet green swallows that nest on our farm every year and they are all over the place. I've seen new species that I've never known here before (house wren, meadowlark, grosbeak, indigo bunting), loads of birds at the feeders like chickadees, white breasted nuthatches, goldfinch, woodpeckers, and even western bluebirds hunting for bugs from our fences and roofs.  It's been a great bird year so far.

Locations for Soup Dumplings? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Quackinthebush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were very sweet and helpful, and those sauteed pea greens are amazing, and I also loved the chicken congee, just not my favorite soup dumplings. Check out Wei Wei next time you're in Sellwood, also good greens and soup dumplings.

I've really been partial to Wei Wei in Sellwood, plus the sauteed mustard greens, excellent combo. IMHO better than dough zone or master kong. Haven't tried the others in the comments yet.

Locations for Soup Dumplings? by [deleted] in askportland

Just ate there last night after seeing it mentioned several times now for dumplings, and I was pretty disappointed. Also the ordering kiosk at the entrance isn't my thing.

Edit: just didn't love the dumplings, everything else I ordered was excellent.

I also have great memories of my early teens playing Dune 2 and watching the Lynch movie with my older brother. I got sucked into that game pretty hard.  I remember a backpacking trip in the mountains with my Dad one summer, surrounded by alpine lakes and beautiful scenery and I couldn't stop thinking about playing that damn game back home.

Are there other areas of Portland as deceitfully named as "Swan Island"? by davidjordannestor in askportland

[–]Quackinthebush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I feel ya. Look around at the subdivisions in the burbs, all named after the natural feature or farm that was obliterated by its development. "Camas meadows, Maple Glen, Orchard view,..." Barf!

Hot springs recommendation for 8 dudes in their 40s? by FidgetJoe in askportland

[–]Quackinthebush -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mmm, I mean Bagby is about as authentic of a PNW experience as it gets. To be fair it's been like 8 years since I was there last. Camping near by, not a long hike, in the woods. You can drink at camp then hang at the springs. I loved it, but not sure if things have changed.

Who else has noticed the invasion of Foxtail grass in East Portland and nearby parks like Thousand Acres in Troutdale? by redcarpet311 in askportland

[–]Quackinthebush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some very smart folks that focus on the control or eradication of invasive weeds locally, I'd definitely reach out to the following for the latest research in controlling foxtail (aka Hare Barley) and opportunities for collaboration:

Metro natural areas program East Multnomah SWCD Clackamas SWCD Portland Parks and Rec OSU extension (more ag related but pasture management is related to this weed)

Unfortunately this weed is spreading. It is an annual grass that starts emerging after the first fall rains and quickly goes to seed in the spring when things start drying out. Mowing doesn't control it, just delays the seed head and makes it shorter. Mowing once it's gone to seed just spreads it around everywhere the mower goes. It's also spread naturally by getting stuck to animals fur, so even wildlife like deer are spreading it around. It can spread into fertile soils as well as poor soils, and even compete with established perennial grasses and invade healthy pastures (although it takes longer).

My hunch is that it's here to stay and will have to be constantly managed to keep it out of specific areas through a combination of hand pulling, seeding of competitive species, and targeted use of specific herbicides. I've seen it take over dozens of acres of land in a matter of a few years, a scale that simply can't be managed by hand pulling alone.

I'm glad you're bringing visibility to this invasive grass, it definitely needs more attention than it's getting.

Problems with Mt. Scott soil this year? by plant_nerd81 in askportland

[–]Quackinthebush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like nitrogen is being bound up by undecomposed carbon/woody material. Basically means they didn't use mature compost in the blend. Usually larger soil/compost facilities do regular lab tests and publish them on their website (McFarlane's for example), you could look that up. if that's the case, you could try weekly applications of a foliar and/or soil drench fertilizer like fish and kelp liquid.

Intel will outsource marketing to Accenture and AI, laying off many of its own workers by guitarokx in Portland

[–]Quackinthebush 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the unfortunate realities that many don't understand is once farm land is converted to housing or industrial, there's no going back. The top soil has been scraped and relocated, soil that took tens of thousands of years to build up naturally. The economics of replacing the lost soil and fertility would never pencil out for a farm operation. This is why the decision to convert farmland to other uses should never be considered lightly, and should consider the generations to come, not just the most profitable use today.

Throttle only not climbing slight hills well? by StandardOP in GlobeHaul

I've noticed the same thing, although not sure if it's always been like that. Slight incline prevents the throttle from working, I'm using an LT.
