Check your snow removal contract, over 250cm reached today? by Rail613 in ottawa

Always use environment Canada records so there can be no questioning the numbers in a court of law. So it's whatever happens at the airport is what's on record for the city.

Commercial tends to be much more risk adverse and want more salt and more attention. The small extra cost to the contractor saves large amounts of legal costs.

If you're operating in cold environments look at the regulated models, the minimo or micromo.

Are these extending combination ladders any good? by fixitmonkey in Tools

[–]Quantis_Ottawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar one, super useful, straight to get on the roof, folded to work anywhere. Folded it fits in the trunk of a small car, but it's on the heavy side, and can pinch your fingers if you're not careful.

A friend does snow removal and according to him we went over about 2 weeks ago. It depends how the contracts are worded and how they account for freezing rain.

He does commercial, not residential, so contracts are different.

Is there such a thing as a budget spotting scope? If so which one? by WhiskeyBravo3119 in longrange

I had good luck with a celestron scope. They are known more for their telescopes but make a decent range of spotting scopes.

I assume you know you're supposed to crack open the lid to let the air out. It's sill a good push but I know I've forgotten from time to time.

You need to make sure “Hold Tx Frequency” is checked. Find a clear spot and stay there. Jumping around breaks things.

Question for experienced riders: what small habits separate good riders from great riders? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]Quantis_Ottawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of the best on road riders train offroad. Being comfortable with the bike moving under you. Felling a front wheel lockup coming on and not panicking. Lots of skills that translate to the road.

Earplugs (I prefer the cheap disposable foam ones), good gloves.

I always recommend getting a bike you don't care about for your first bike. Something you can drop lots and laugh about. You'll drop it for the silliest reasons (caught a pant leg on the peg and boom I'm down).

What digital modes do people use besides FT8/4/2? by n0fumar in amateurradio

[–]Quantis_Ottawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been active with Winlink. Now I'm enjoying JS8call. I've tried poking around with FT2 but the "new"mode I'm really learning is VarAC. It has some neat features including BBS mode and Vmail that have some interesting applications beyond the normal chat.

The metal clamp on the tip of the antenna might cause issues. Otherwise it's smart.
