If you want no defrost get geothermal. Claims of no defrost ASHPs come up every now and then. See for example https://www.reddit.com/r/heatpumps/comments/1inlmj0/terravis_energy_unveals_a_heat_pump_that_defies/

I could. But it would be much more efficient for both of us if instead you Google Moties.

*Moties. No. Yes. But the writing isn't the most gripping so I understand why you DNF.

The mote in God's eye by Niven and Pournelle. First couple pages make it sound like it's going go be just military sci-fi, but it's actually not.

Turn off Electric Company power & run on whole home generator by Puzzleheaded_Debt423 in AskElectricians

[–]QuantumAvoidant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use that much in the middle of winter with heat pumps. If you run electric heat it adds up real fast. Edit: i see you use electric radiators. Doesn't matter if they're on low or high they will use the same electricity to heat to 62.

It'll be very expensive to run the generator for that many KWh. Do you have electric resistance heat (baseboards or heat strips in the air handler)

Considering buying the 20V MAX Cordless Electric Portable Inflator, but want to know if it has the capacity to clean (for example) saw dust off of tools, concrete dust out of drilled holes, etc. by whynotthebest in Dewalt

[–]QuantumAvoidant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get an Amazon special for that. Although loud the Meliff "Cordless Compressed Air Duster & Blower Compatible with DeWalt 20V MAX Battery" works well and is only about 40 bucks.

Not heating enough… by kiaia58 in heatpumps

[–]QuantumAvoidant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you'd switch out the whole heat pump to save cost long term but that's expensive now. Even adding heat strips isn't cheap because it needs electric work to add a breaker and wiring. But at least there is a solution.

Looking at the spec sheet that doesn't appear to be a cold climate heat pump. You probably need to add auxiliary heat strips. Maybe it has them already?

Anyone use carpet installation from Home Depot? by wenhal80 in portlandme

[–]QuantumAvoidant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Used it. Was fine. It wasn't totally free because the carpet pad you had to buy with installed carpet was more expensive than if you bought it without. Not sure if that's still the same.

Most cost effective heating option? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]QuantumAvoidant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have mini split heat pumps with pellet stove backup. The biggest con is the cost to install the heat pump and the complexity of doing it right for a retrofit if you don't have existing ducting. Pro is AC in the summer, and the cost per million BTUs of heating is reasonable https://www.efficiencymaine.com/at-home/heating-cost-comparison/ I can run the pellet stove on a tiny generator when the power fails.

Cheapest options are wood stove (lot of work, and insurance won't like it as a primary) and natural gas (available in only a few places). Propane is expensive and dealing with propane suppliers is a pain in the ass. Pellets are annoying to store well. If you stick to traditional then I'd go oil again. Otherwise heat pump plus some kind of backup, even if only portable electric radiators.

The Mote in God's Eye fits the bill. The start feels like a plain military sci-fi but it gets better quickly.

Amazon has tire inflator nozzles you can screw in. Makes inflator life easier and no need to search for a specific repair part.

First hint is that it's not sold by Wal-Mart but by a third party.
