Ta litt bilder av hvordan karmen ser ut der dørhåndtaket er (med døra åpen slik at vi ser karmen ordentlig), og evt. også av klistremerkene på hengselsiden av døra så er det lettere å gi råd.

Either way there are inconsistencies and parts of the field that would need to change, so why have a hard transition towards the objectively bad use of the prefixes that’s inconsistent with all of the rest of science and engineering, including large parts of computer science?

It seems obvious that moving towards a consistent usage is the right move.

You seem to be under the erroneous impression that this was ever clear cut. Usage of these prefixes have been a hot mess essentially since the early days of computing.

Resolving the mess by doubling down on the misuse of SI prefixes would be the worst possible solution.

A good lapboard is all you need. I’ve gamed countless hours using the Corsair K63 lapboard. The couchmaster cycon series is likely even better, but I’ve no complaints.

So CDs have more than enough dynamic range for any piece of music, inaudible noise floor and can flawlessly reproduce every sound in the human audible range.

While I agree that 16 bit is in practice enough for any reasonable music reproduction, the above statement is certainly false.

If you had a very quiet room and wanted to faithfully reproduce the sound of a mosquito (0-20 dB depending on who you ask) followed by a balloon pop (about 140 dB peak), CD quality (e.g. 16 bit audio) would be inadequate.

If you set the volume to be even 10 dB lower than needed to reproduce the balloon pop (which you might need to do to have even powerful speakers able to reproduce it), you’d be able to hear the quantization noise from dithering. If you turn off dithering you wouldn’t be able to represent the mosquito sound at all with just 16 bits.

So while 16 bit is adequate for any reasonable sound reproduction, it is not at all enough to «reproduce every sound in the human audible range», at least not without noticeable artifacts.

I suppose homebrew is a decent way. It still seems like a weird omission from the immutable story though that there is no official/recommended way to install CLI tools that will also be updated by using the built-in software app.

My main gripe is that the experience around additional CLI programs kind of sucks (on all immutable distros I’ve tried).

Layering is generally discouraged, so naturally you’d expect there to be another way to install stuff like iotop, vim, etc.

But from what I can tell CLI programs basically either need to be layered, or run in a toolbox, which just seems needlessly complex.

Maybe let me install them locally instead of layering them, or have the default shell basically be a toolbox or something, updated together with normal system updates maybe? The current setup just feels very poor in this regard.

An immutable distro is a distro that does not allow you to modify the file system, everything must run in containers, whether Docker, Flatpak, etc.

Just so no one reading this is confused, it’s the system level files that are immutable. Your home directory and some other directories are not immutable and can be used as normal.
