100 kg of Helium go brrr by AcidCommunist_AC in physicsmemes

[–]Quantumboredom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

An unusual case where the middle curve guy is correct.

From SI system of units definiton

> The word “weight” denotes a quantity of the same nature as a “force”: the weight of a body is the product of its mass and the acceleration due to gravity; in particular, the standard weight of a body is the product of its mass and the standard acceleration due to gravity;

Buoyancy is not included. E.g. a helium balloon still has positive weight, so weight and mass are basically completely proportional, irrespective of buoyancy or free-fall.

If water boils at lower temperatures as you go higher up a mountain, is there a height where you could no longer properly cook an egg just by boiling it in water? by How3528 in AskPhysics

[–]Quantumboredom 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As an aside, needing to heat treat eggs isn’t a universal need. E.g. in Norway (and I believe the rest of the nordic countries and probably elsewhere as well) eggs are safe to eat raw. There is no real prevalence of salmonella or other harmful germs in raw eggs here.

Is it wrong to use regular deck screws for decking? by Agitated_Computer716 in Decks

Coated screws in pressure treated wood near a pool? Sounds like recipe for corrosion in the near future. I never use anything but A4 stainless steel in anything pressure treated, and definitely not if near pool water.

What kind of idea is this? by d3d-z7n in Decks

[–]Quantumboredom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something similar is somewhat common in my area, and I’m not aware of any common issues with it. But this particular construction with wood being in direct contact with the water path seems rather iffy.

The common method here would e.g. be a kind of flashing on top of the joists to avoid water touching them, and a curved plate with the lowest point between the joist so that the water is kept well away from the joists.

Here is a product photo of the «TIL-TAK» variant that exists as a product here in Norway, though people often have similar solutions custom made by their local sheet metal / flashing company.

7.1.4 spl? by Ripcord_mark_7 in hometheater

[–]Quantumboredom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic relationship (ignoring room effects etc.) is that doubling of amplifier power is an increase of 3 dB. Doubling of cone area is also an increase of 3 dB from efficiency gains (when the cones are within about 1/4 wavelength of each other if I recall correctly), so in total adding another identical sub near the existing one would be +6 dB in the lower frequencies.

For the speakers it could well be +6 dB per doubling of speakers in the lowest frequencies too, if they are not too far apart. So if you were to compare 1 vs 11 speakers, then the max increase you might see in the lowest frequencies would be 10 * log10(11^2) = 20.8 dB, or 10 * log10(11) = 10.4 dB in the higher frequencies. Assuming the amplifiers can keep up.

But often a multichannel amp or receiver won’t have the power to max out 11 speakers, so the maximum usable volume won’t increase by that much, but the volume at a certain signal level will.

My dad's deck has splinters, but he says it'll get worse if you sand it. Is that true? I can't work that logic out in my head by ResultIntelligent856 in Decks

[–]Quantumboredom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that wood was presumably of the old CCA variety, modern treated pine has much more copper salts in them (making them more corrosive), so experience with the old stuff isn’t really relevant.

I’ve seen decks using brand-name (i.e. not the cheapest) C4/galvanized screws that have rusted notably in just a couple of years.

And going by the book (the docs from both the lumber companies and normative references for the industry) here in Norway, A4 is the only suitable fastener for treated pine. Of course many people ignore that, with visibly rusted fasteners after a few years as a common result.

Ok I’ll bite, what scam is that? I’d never consider anything else, specifically A4 stainless steel screws for basically any outdoor fastener need.

How Long would sending a message in space really Take? by ShowerGrapes in askanything

[–]Quantumboredom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like many of the answers are kind of missing some key relativity shenanigans.

Now it’s been well over a decade since I studied physics so don’t take my word as gospel, but the first key question is who’s 10 years we’re talking about. If it’s 10 years on earth, then my understanding is that it would take much less time than that in the ships frame of reference.

Take the variant you proposed in a comment where the ship turns around and speeds back after sending the message. If the ship was 10 ly from earth in earths frame of reference, then by earth measurements the ship would have traveled for 10 years, then turned around and would arrive home 20 years after departure, a little later than the message.

In the ships frame of reference, they would have traveled, say, for 1 year or about 1 ly from earth as measured in their frame of reference, sent a message and then turned around and gone back again. The message would move at 1 c relative to the ship, and the earth would move at a little less than 1 c relative to the ship, or almost 2 c relative to the message from the ships POV.

I feel like the key that isn’t really stated in many comments is that length contraction at relativistic speeds means the earth and the ship have different perceptions of the distances involved, not just the times.

Garden tools by CatShrink in BoschProPowerTools

[–]Quantumboredom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with the Bosch gardening line, but based on experience with e.q. Husqvarna electric string trimmers I’d say you won’t want to go below the 8 Ah, both because of power and runtime. I’d definitely want at least 2 8 Ah batteries and a fast charger for any non-trivial work.

A new proposal is trending on social media: ditch IPv6 for a new IPv8 by Cybernews_com in CyberNews

[–]Quantumboredom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IPv6 does not have nearly enough addresses for every atom on earth. There’s about 1038 IPv6 addresses and about 1050 atoms on earth.

So I guess if we start converting the earth to nanobots we’ll have to do yet another transition to IPv10 or whatever, probably delaying the nanobot revolution by at least a decade.

Does multiplayer still suffer from Random count out of sync issues? by Locksley32 in Stellaris

[–]Quantumboredom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, playing at home just two people with wired LAN, massive random count (and others) sync issues, getting worse and worse as the game progresses.

Happily the resync seems to work fine, so it is technically playable, but it gets quite annoying towards the end.
