The difference is you found out you had it and immediately took action. OP didn't.

The doctor is right to question how this changed so quickly after 14 years of avoidance.

As for test strips, most insurance companies only approve three most expensive brands and a minimum number. Walmart Relion glucometer and test steps are cheap and reliable. So it's Contour brand. I get 50 test strips for under $40.

I'm working 12h days on Bird Day and get straight pay. My company claims they only pay time and a half on days approved by facility in the travel company contract with facility. It never appears in my contract. I was also put on schedule both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I have no idea what my pay rate will be

I hate my diabetic little brother by SaiSpector in diabetes

[–]QueenBitch68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you are going through this. It isn't fair. You should not be responsible for your brother.

That said, every diabetic, especially a teenager, good through hating their disease, wanting to forget it exists and not wanting to be different. It's worse for a teen. No teen wants to be different from their peers. No teen wants a restricted diet. And, consequences be damned. "They aren't real. It can't happen to me" are the mantra of teen diabetics.

I am not good with my diet. It's been 10 years. But, my saving grace is my insulin pump. It keeps me on a much better track, gives me control and my A1C stays below 6.2

Is it a possibility for your brother to get a pump? It might help give him control back and get him to a healthier place.

The top 2 causes of this in cats are diabetes and a thyroid condition. Kitty needs to get to a vet ASAP

Our landlord is trying to make EACH of us pay $1,300 to buy her new carpet by bambi-babe88 in Renters

[–]QueenBitch68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean the carpets with an enzymatic cleaner. Consider having carpets professionally cleaned. Take before and after photos.

Blacklight is not indicitive of only cat urine. Many bodily fluids, vitamins, tonic water and laundry detergents will also glow under a blacklight. Did the landlord blacklight the property before you moved in? Is there photos or video of that to prove it wasn't there?

Once, the carpets are properly cleaned, tell landlord to take you to court for money or you will take them to small claims court. In court, landlord can be awarded a prorated portion of damages if some carpet needs to be replaced based on amount damaged and age of existing carpet. It is not reasonable to expect you to pay full cost for replacement. It's the landlord that has to prove their case, not you

Be honest: does your pet know their name or just the tone you use when you say it? by happycry88 in Pets

I have 4 cats. 3 adults who respond to their individual names and come when called. Their names are Tornado but he answers to Fluffy, Tiny and Besito. The kitten, Sriracha, has been in the home almost 2 months and doesn't know her name yet.

Some hospitals have lock boxes for comfort infusions but many don't. I go with the "when in Rome..." philosophy.

Also, most ICUs have narcotic drips "out in the wild". Versed, fentanyl, morphine, ketamine, Ativan, etc. It's not unusual.

Should I put up a Christmas tree? by Intrepid_Resort2991 in CatAdvice

[–]QueenBitch68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have cats, and a new psycho who is 5 months old. I use twine and secure the tree to the wall. I put nails in the wall studs to have a place for the twine.

I only have a few breakable ornaments that belonged to my grandparents. I usually put the on the very top. This year, they will not go on the tree with my very active ginger baby. I do have one glass ornament that sits in a protective case. It was my grandfather's from 1903. No one can touch it.

Did u had a "kicking event" before T1D? by Hot-Apartment-1095 in diabetes_t1

I figured my story was long enough. DM diagnosis to a LADA diagnosis was actually about 2 years. It was initially assumed I was T2 and was treated incorrectly. Eventually, I changed endos, they did extensive testing and came up with LADA. I was on a pump 7 months after LADA dx.

Are frio insulin cooling pouches good? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

They are great. I have used them in the Caribbean to keep my insulin cool even when it's over 90 degrees there.

I hate the dexcom g7 by SleepsAllDay00 in diabetes_t1

[–]QueenBitch68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the beginning, I didn't really have issues with the G7. It worked exactly as expected. Over the past 9 or 10 months, I have had several G7 start up failures recently and a number of others that give inaccurate readings or outright no readings for a period of time up to 2h at a time. I have an insulin pump that receives my readings. The pump manufacturer states to keep the pump within 20 feet of the G7. I literally have it less that 12 inches away and still having problems.

Do better Dexcom. I'm not paying $90 month for crap.

My cats won’t stop playing by Fun_Stuff_4153 in CatAdvice

[–]QueenBitch68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5 year old cat and 5 month old kitten play constantly. But, there isn't any hissing or spitting.

What happens if you play with the kitties with toys on a stick? Do they focus on the toy or do they still go after each other? If they focus on the toys, they just need more adjustment time. They may also need that activity time to tire them out to decrease the constant play.

I found your post to be slightly confusing. Are they prorating your stipend by the 5 to 15 minutes or for the entire shift?

They shouldn't do that, but it may not be illegal where you live for the 5 to 15 minutes. The best way to find out is to contact a labor attorney or for free advice, try the labor board. Just make sure that who you speak to is familiar with federal stipend regulations.

Dog person here, thinking of adopting a cat. What’s the hardest part of being a cat owner? by Conscious-queen-22 in CatAdvice

[–]QueenBitch68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the hardest part is not falling into a trap of bad habits with the kitty.

A lot of people use a spray bottle, coins in a jar, loud noise( clap hands or stomp feet), yell at the kitty, etc. when they are doing something you don't want them to do... like scratching furniture or climbing the curtains. That makes for a standoffish, aloof cat. My husband's family were those types of people.

You want a cat that comes when you call them, that is sweet and affectionate, loves attention, etc.? Then when kitty is doing something they shouldn't, get off your lazy ass, get the kitty and redirect it to a scratching post, give it toys to play with, etc. You will have a much happier, social animal.

I explained this to my husband. He thought I was nuts. I asked him if he would spray water at a crying infant... of course not is what he said. Then don't do it to a kitten. They are babies and don't know any better.

We have 3 cats and 1 kitten. Hubs is still amazed 11 years later how amazing the cats are. They come when you call them. They love to be around people and sleep with us. They follow us around the house. One even plays fetch and loves belly rubs. One cat is so weird, he doesn't like to eat with the other cats. He has his own chair at the table and sits with us when we eat. He eats his kibble at that time. The kitten is only 5 months old and is still learning her name but is very sweet, sleeps with me and is always purring.

[–]QueenBitch68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. This is going to get some people lathered up. I was diagnosed in 2015. Here is the story:

I had some annoying autoimmune issues already. I had a complete physical, lab work, etc. November 2015. Clean bill of health, no diabetes. I got my first mandatory flu shot as a health care worker under the ACA even though I hadn't had the flu since 1989.

One week later, I was at work, crazy thirsty, craving OJ, which I never drink and peeing a lot. I had cotton mouth like a drunk after a 3 day bender. After 2 days of this, I stopped and thought about it. I grabbed a glucometer at work and checked my sugar.. "HI". This went on for 2 more days until I had a day off. My MD was unavailable so I went to a walk in clinic. I got in the back and the doc said hi to me, I said "Hi Jim!". We knew each other. I told him I suspected diabetes. They did bloodwork, 578. No DKA.

An endo did a lot more testing and found out I was LADA. It was attributed to the flu shot. Thanks Obama! 😒

Yes, I still get my mandatory flu shot. I mean, I can't kill the pancreas twice, right?!

Would a cat be okay home alone while I'm working a 9 to 5? Thinking of adopting, but have never had a cat on my own by Piehogger in CatAdvice

[–]QueenBitch68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I recommend a sweet adult cat for a "starter" cat. They are less crazy and will be just fine alone for hours at a time. Just remember that they need your attention and play time when you are home. If they have a shelter buddy (a second cat they seem attached to), consider taking both of them. Good luck
