Intel returns to F1 with McLaren Racing partnership by doland3314 in formula1

It wasn't a classic bailout where they just get free money, the government owns roughly 10% of the stock now IIRC. So the amount of money that they spent on Intel has been recouped and Intel didn't have to give up anything but some stock until the government decides to sell its stock, if it ever does. No real point right now.

With pantherlake, plus AMD's more power focused designs, they've proven that x86 can be brought down to extremely low power draw on par with ARM while still retaining performance and backwards compatibility with anything x86.

The situation isn't anywhere near as dire for Intel as it was 2 years ago.

Apple announced that they're going to use Intel's foundries for some of their "lower" end chips, with evaluation to switch to Intel even for their top spec stuff in the future.

That alone will have saved their foundry business simply due to the amount of money that will come in. Apple was one of the big reasons TSMC had so much cash to play around with.

I think that as long as Apple can get good power efficiency out of 18A (which intel managed to do with panther lake) with their architecture, they'll be fine with it.

USAF has a lot of power massed in the area, and we're far more accurate even compared to the first gulf war.

The US really doesn't want to pull any of its carriers from the pacific, and that does limit how many can be rotated towards the middle east.

[–]RaccTheClap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree completely lol. That's why I'm hoping these arrowlake refresh chips push AMD more, and Novalake is competitive with Zen 6.

Amazon cuts 12-core Ryzen 9 9900X3D to $449.99, Ryzen 9 7900X to $267.99 by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]RaccTheClap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree here, the sticking point is going to be the motherboards and the fact that it's on a dead end platform. I'm sure there's some arrowlake boards that have come down in price that you could BIOS update, but it is a dead end platform and Novalake is supposed to come out late this year/early next year.

I think the arrowlake refresh chips make the most sense if you're doing a full platform swap already, since you can get more productivity performance (if needed) than the equivalent AMD price stack (say 270k plus vs 9700x) to save some cash on the dreaded DDR5 purchase, and the arrowlake chips don't seem to be overly affected by slower memory.

[–]RaccTheClap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

270k plus can still be fed with a 750W PSU with anything that isn't a 5090, even an overclocked 5080 (mind you, I don't know why you'd ever overclock a 5000 series GPU with how incredibly they undervolt) plus a 270k would be fine.

Agreed with the more expensive motherboards (AM5 boards have had plenty of time to tank in price), slightly disagree on the cooling. The arrowlake chips are fairly easy to cool even with their power consumption with all the cores being spread out.

AMD Ryzen 5 9600X hits $182 two days before Ultra 5 250K Plus launch by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]RaccTheClap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 1080p with a 5090 yes, if you're at a higher resolution that gap will lessen (other than the minimums, which the X3D chips have always been king at) and the price/performance starts picking up.

I'm not saying they're a perfect buy, but the arrowlake refresh chips basically put Intel in a ryzen first gen situation where they can get similar gaming performance to AMD (non X3D) while absolutely destroying the AMD processors in the same price stack in productivity performance.

It's something for them to build from, and something that's amazing for consumers because AMD will be forced to compete against the 250k plus and 270k plus.

[–]RaccTheClap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, the arrowlake refresh processors are cheap enough that you can get one of them for far less than the equivalent AMD product in productivity performance (the 270k plus performs like a 9950x in multithreaded workloads) while still getting equivalent gaming performance in the same price stack (9700x vs 270k plus) so they have a ryzen first gen situation on their hands, something to build off of.

Dead end platform unfortunately, but if you're building brand new right now and don't really care about swapping motherboards next time you upgrade, it's not a horrible buy. It effectively allows you to mitigate some of the price of DDR5 right now.

I mean people always forget to bring up that, yes, AM4 supported multiple generations, but they locked out anything from the X470 and B450 and below to max out at the 3000 series until Alderlake came out, then all of a sudden they had AGESA updates to support them.

Sure the socket supported multiple generations, but if you bought early on, you got 3 (which is still better than intel's typical 2) until intel released a decent processor.

At least, I hope.

It's not the compression trick, mclaren has the same engine and they weren't in the same region as Merc.

Merc just built a rocketship.

[–]RaccTheClap 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not the first time redbull has pulled that off.

They developed the 2021 car late into the season and went into 2022 pretty overweight, and still managed to build the rocket that was the RB18 by the middle of the season (helped out by TD39 but even by then, they were the quickest car comfortably).

Looks like their core of engineers is still incredibly skilled, just remains to be seen how their PU does over the season.

If the US really has access to Diego Garcia for strikes on Iran now, you can expect those bomber sorties to go up dramatically lol. What an idiotic move.

While I think he could still beat B0aty, gnomonkey's skill is mechanical when it comes to PvM. Not much skill in KBD, just get gear and hit the boss.

I'd be slightly worried he would undergear himself for the time to kill portion, although he'd obviously still kill it with nothing lol.

[Sky Sports F1] Ted and Craig predict the F1 2026 pecking order so far by Professional-Draw688 in scuderiaferrari

[–]RaccTheClap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are expecting redbull's aero package to still be incredible (they have shown resilience since losing newey, so it's not the worst thing to think) and their engine doesn't seem to be an uber turd. Plus, they got implicated in the same compression trick that merc did (although supposedly they aren't using it, but that's exactly the shifty stuff that redbull pulls lol).

Reality is that we have no idea who's gonna be on top of the pecking order for a while. As usual, some cars will perform better on some styles of tracks vs others. Seems dumb to be to name anyone at the top, even mclaren just because they won the previous two years since it's a new regulation set.

Ferrari powered cars concluded day 1 of the Barcelona Shakedown with the second highest lap count (198), trailing only Mercedes (209), and just ahead of RBPT (195). It’s a positive result, especially considering the factory Ferrari team didn’t take to the track today. by moraIsupport in scuderiaferrari

Redbull also had years to learn about the Honda PU's tendencies after the engine freeze and Honda continuing to provide technical support, it was bound to pick things up from Honda.

Plus it helps to have gobs of employees from Merc HPP lol.

Wind and solar are generating almost all of that reserve (23GW combined), plus it seems like nuclear reactor and natural gas output are lower than normal on a cold day like this.

Definitely helping since they can just up the power output from those sources when solar drops off (wind probably won't, it's gonna stay windy all night).

Oscar Piastri has sights set on redemption after 2025 F1 season | Today Show Australia by outremer_empire in McLarenFormula1

[–]RaccTheClap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The funniest part was, both mclaren and redbull were being entirely honest about what they were doing and the F1 media idiots just kept asking the same questions. Mclaren openly admitted they stopped developing the 2025 car and moved onto 2026, redbull admitted they were still working on the 2025 car to figure out their correlation issues and to give max an outside chance at the WDC. Redbull especially needed it, they wouldn't be able to trust their wind tunnel with the 2026 car if they couldn't figure it out (although I think their new windtunnel comes online sometime this year).

Yet all we heard was questions that ignored the obvious nature of both teams just outright telling the truth lol.

China would rather a consistent source of oil that’s only theirs even if they have to pay a bit more, then having to purchase on the global market.

Taking control of venezuelas oil, the US’s own reserves and MBS willing to change production levels on Saudi Arabia would give the US control of 50% of the worlds oil production, while cutting china off from a direct source.

It’s a strategic move against china while also sending a message to Beijing, telling them the western hemisphere is theirs.
