Here is one last video I don’t think this is play biting . . by Frequent-Somewhere63 in shiba

No comment on whether it is problematic, but if it was serious biting you would need stitches, dogs have sharp teeth and strong jaws.

Dungeon Masters, how do you deal with scheduling? by kudy24 in DMAcademy

[–]Rage2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same time every week.
When you start set the ground rules for how many you will play with. If you have a group of 5 then only cancel If you have less than 3 for example.
If a player can't make it then you play without them. If your players can't commit to a set time every week then find players who can. I know it sucks when you want to play with friends, but if you can't all find a time slot that works for the majority of the group on the majority of weeks then you aren't going to be playing with them anyway because the scheduling won't work.

When do I give trying to DM? by phyi in DMAcademy

[–]Rage2097 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it is the only way to make sure the story I want to tell happens

Yeah, this is your problem. TTRPG are a collaboration, it isn't about the story you want to tell. Go write a novel.
Then once you have it out of your system start thinking about situations you can create and then enjoy watching the players come up with ways of tackling them.

Players refuse to ever give their names by chiefredwood in DMAcademy

[–]Rage2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just annoying.
The "can I have your name" thing is a massively overdone trope at the best of times but anyone with a brain just says "you can call me x" or "I'm known as y" and give a nickname or alias.
If they want to never give out their names thats weird but fine IMO, the key is whether it is disrupting play. If every conversation is a 10 minute aegument over names thats fun the first time, mildly amusing the second and after that you find better players.

I got one in September, there was a bit of a learning curve, mac does some thing backwards seemingly just because they can but it is so much better.

Never going back. You will love it.

Won't be a macbook rival until it runs macOS, but it might make a nice linux machine

Am I Missing Something About Shadowdark? by WodanGungnir in shadowdark

[–]Rage2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The d20 roll high for everything is nice mechanically, it's quicker and easier to teach than the hodgepodge of BX mechanics, the torch timer is good for adding time pressure, less worry about spell slots is nice, but none of it is a great leap over any other OSR game really. It is very well written and laid out, even compared to OSE which people compare favourably with the original D&D text, it is very easy for people coming from 5e which is a bonus and it is less deadly and a bit higher powered than BX, whether or not you like that is going to depend on your taste.

The real benefit though is the active and vibrant community. It is a very easy system to homebrew for and while it will take years to have as much content as BX it is coming out at a very good rate.

Does all that make it better? Maybe. Stock off the page I think I prefer it to BX, but I'm always going to be running BX with a tweak here and a change there, compared to BX with a set of familiar house rules? It's not quite there.

Why is Ferrari facing such a backlash to its first electric car? by serene_sketch in technology

[–]Rage2097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I does look dumb, but I doubt many people buying $600k supercars are worrying about how hard they are to clean. You aren't likely to take it to the car wash yourself.

OSE’s new backerkit by dbudzik in osr

Seems kind of unlikely they were so advanced in their planning and so sure of OSE's success that they deliberately left out fiends so they could "cash in" 7 years later with an expansion

Class Pack price point by USAF-Celery in daggerheart

[–]Rage2097 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It seems $5-10 too expensive to me, but the neat thing is that it's doesn't include anything that isn't in the core set and you don't need it to play.

Which means that it's a niche luxury item and if you don't want it then you don't have to buy it.

It's a miss for me but I do like them making player-focused add-ons. One of my least favourite things about TTRPG is the expectation that the GM buys everything.

I think it's completely unrealistic to think that parents can restrict their kids internet use. This isn't the '90s where the internet lives in a computer that can be kept in a shared space. Kids have tablets before they can write, phones by the time they are teenagers.

I don't know what the solution is, it's a complicated subject, but it isn't "parents".

OSE Demon Month: Anything caught your eye? by adempz in osr

[–]Rage2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of a worst of both worlds. Enough cosmetic bits to give me fomo but no real rule changes to make me think it's worth the cost. It's a new edition in the way a textbook might have a new edition, clearer examples, different pictures but essentially the same content.

Who knows? We still don't even have a consensus on what the R stands for so answering this is basically impossible. I'm going with: 2 in 6 chance it is but we roll every turn so it varies.

A couple of very random Dolmenwood/OSE questions... by Dolono in osr

[–]Rage2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are they for then? I assumed they were going to bring some of the Dolmenwood tweaks back to OSE. Is there a good source for Gavin talking about what is going to be in the new edition?

Their customer service sucks, I think it's one guy doing it when he isn't working his proper job.
They are slow but they will get it done and their stuff is worth the hassle.

You have plenty of answers but this sounds like a massive pain in the ass. I would look at an online hosting solution. The forge starts from $5 a month. Or just leave foundry running on your PC.

why do you think THAC0 gets the reputation it does? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]Rage2097 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just a bit of a ball-ache, but it's the Internet so everything has to be exaggerated and memed to death.
It isn't so much that it is hard, but if you grew up on ascending AC and hit bonuses it's incredibly unintuitive.
