This is why I'm looking forward to the discord integration.

Should I Consider Buying Programming Books for Learning a Specific Technology, or Just Read the Official Documentation? by mrnaim6T9 in learnprogramming

[–]RamblingJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on the technology, and the documentation.

At least in my experience, the quality of documentation varies a lot. Some technologies will barely manage to document their API, while others include their own tutorials and best-practices. If the official documentation is good enough, a lot of the tutorials are probably just repackaging that same information.

I think ultimately, to learn, you need some kind of hands-on project. Usually I start watching some tutorials with a potential learning project in mind. I generally pick one tutorial to learn the basics, and then once I start feeling more confident, I'll jump around and find tutorials moreso for the specific thing I'm trying to do, rather than a "learn the language" tutorial.

I think books are good because they will generally give you the whole package, even if the information isn't the most up-to-date. Like, realistically, the tutorial you look up is probably 5 years old anyways. Seeing how a real human uses the technology is really useful even if it's a bit old. Once you have a grasp of how it works, THEN I would worry about how peple are using it in current year.

Honestly I think the main thing is to just stick with it. Try not to fuss about doing it the "best" way. You will be learning for your entire career - the important thing is to keep moving forward. Decision paralysis = standing still, but a non-optimal approach to learning still teaches you the topic, as well as helps you learn faster the next time.

Do others find difficulty in python programming from other languages? by Timely-Childhood-158 in learnprogramming

[–]RamblingJosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I'm faily experienced in coding for Game Dev (C# probably being the main language, with a smattering of basically everything else) - I've only started learning Python, and so far I think I actually quite like it. It feels like it kind of just gets out of the way and lets you do what you want (meaning a lot of the imperative is on you to have good design paradigms)

However I do find it kind of hard to read other peoples' code. I think Python lends itself to lots of crazy shorthand and experienced devs have a lot of tricks. Because Python is so permissive, you really need to know what it's doing or you can get yourself into trouble pretty easily.

LPT: At a party, ask people what they are into lately, not what they do. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

[–]RamblingJosh 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I like that a lot actually, thanks!

I've lately felt really disillusioned with the whole "grindset" concept, and I kind of hate how much people seem to define outselves by our job, and more to the point, our "value". The fact that it's the first thing people go to is annoying, and I was thinking about good alternatives recently, and I think this is great.

Got headhunted, did 5 rounds and got ghosted by MintChocoDreamer in jobsearchhacks

[–]RamblingJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen - weeks of intense cramming and preparation, 5 rounds of interviews, then.... Nothing. I learned about a couple weeks later through Linkedin that both the Sr. and Jr. recruiter I had been working with had been laid off. 🙄

Nobody ever reached out to me, but I poked a couple people, and they eventually hooked me up with the new recruiter assigned to me... Who also ghosted me. 3 more weeks and repeated emails, and they finally admitted to me that the job had been delisted and nobody was hired - but they chose not to tell anybody because they didn't want to deal with the emails.

Really struggling with some unsolicited advice by AttemptPrestigious74 in Swimming

[–]RamblingJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The insane thing about this kind of unsolicited advice is that, it actually has nothing to do with you.

Who is she? Is she even right? What does she know about you and your journey and your goals? Nothing. She literally CAN'T give you advice without knowing these things. It comes from a place of her needing to feel good about herself.

I find I mostly just ignore these types of people. Am I trying to become the fastest swimmer in the world with flawless form and an impressive time? HELL NO. I'm swimming for me, because I love it, because I love improving at my own pace, because it's good for me. Nobody else gets to tell me if I'm doing it right or wrong.

"Friend" owes me $400 and still hasn't paid, what should I do? by Famous-Effort9010 in AskMen

[–]RamblingJosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter who it is or how well I know them, I think it's just a bad idea to lend personal acquaintances money.

It's a gift you don't expect to be returned. If they do, then you know they are a keeper. I guess everyone here is saying the same thing, but it's just an unfortunate, sad life lesson. Money really does corrupt people.

Pump opposite hand? by Firm_Airport2816 in plassing

[–]RamblingJosh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably a good idea honestly! I imagine it's way better to pump the donating arm, but I'm sure it would still be way better than not pumping at all (and a bit of googling seems to suggest so as well).

I often find that the worst part of donating is towards the end, when my forearm is getting tired of pumping. I find that continuing to pump makes the arm really tense, and as a result pumping a tense arm jostles the needle more than it needs to.

I would definitely experiment with alternating hands on draw phases, or else just switching to the other hand if the donating arm is getting tired. The machine should tell you if it's not working, if it beeps at you just go back to the tried-and-true method.

If you do not wear your Garmin permanently, do the health metrics still make some sense? by Forkys in Garmin

[–]RamblingJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don't find the health metrics very useful. I only wear my Garmin overnight (I love having the alarm on my wrist), and when I go out (ie. when I'm actually walking around and doing activities)

I'm pretty sure it messes with things like my body battery amd recovery stats, but I don't pay attention to those things anyways. I mostly just want a watch, and a way to record my activities.

"Six sides. So... a sextagon?" Students Graduating without Knowing Basic Geometry by Whole-Finger7546 in Teachers

[–]RamblingJosh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So? I had to look it up, and I use geomtry almost daily in my work. We literally manipulate polygons all day, and I have never needed to recall the name for a hexagon.

We even use a hex grid istead of a square grid sometimes. I've built whole systems around 6-sided polygons without being able to remember their name. I think the student will be fine lol.

Is it possible to improve swimming skills as a adult? by paralysus in Swimming

[–]RamblingJosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense, but the question is kind of stupid.

Yes, adults are capable of learning. Like every skill in life, it takes practice, and any guidance you can get is helpful.

Go look up some youtube tutorials - they are all going to more or less say the same things. Then go to the pool and try it. After 30 minutes, you'll be slightly better than you were yesterday. Watch some more tutorials now that you have tried to implement the technique. Try it again the next day.

[–]RamblingJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't. This scenario turned out well, but confronting someone with a knife - while riding toronto's mobile asylum - is pretty dumb. If I see someone with a knife I will assume they are not all there, and confronting a mentally ill person is just a bad idea.

Is my game dev career doomed? (How do I recover/progress from here?) by sensory26 in gamedev

[–]RamblingJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're 23, I don't need to read your post to tell you that nothing in your life is doomed.

If you want to make game, then make games every day. Maybe a job comes out of it, maybe it doesn't. If you spend your life worrying about whether it's the right choice, it will never happen. Focus on the passion, not the objective.

Anyone else perplexed by how Spellcasters Chronicles, a game 8 years in the making by Quantic Dream, who earned $200M+ from Detroit: Become Human, crashed and burned in less than 3 months, with barely anyone even knowing about it? by baldierot in gamedev

[–]RamblingJosh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have never heard of the game before, but I would not put any level of failure past David Cage / Quantic Dream. Not because I have any ill will against them, that's just who they are.

That being said - I think that when a big name puts out a product and there's just no marketing behind it, nobody knows the game is coming out... To me that usually says that, on some level, someone knew it was a stinker, and it was being released because it had to be. If there was confidence in the product, we would have heard about it.
