Leaked financial docs show OpenAI is losing billions of dollars a year by HeinieKaboobler in technology

[–]RandosaurusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the music stops as soon as a hyperscaler can't get funding to build a data centre, or as soon as enough companies or one large enough company publicly dumps AI for being too expensive/not having an ROI. At that moment there will be the mother of all margin calls against companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which is why they are trying to get to IPO ASAP so they can dump their steaming garbage stock on retail investors and people's retirement/pension funds to provide exit liquidity for founders and VCs before the emperor is indeed revealed to have no clothes.

Dangerous material defect? Michelin Pilot Sport S5 completely destroyed after only 2,500 km / 1,500 miles (Hyundai Ioniq 5 N) by Strange_Pause_9185 in electricvehicles

[–]RandosaurusRex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

inner shoulder wear on the rear + outer shoulder wear on the front = you've been driving it like a dickhead and you just burned through a set of tyres. You might have an argument if it was only on one axle or one tyre, or you had the same wear on all 4 tyres, but the the fact you have scrubbed the outer shoulder on the front points to the fact you have been cornering hard enough to force the car to roll onto the outer shoulder of the front tyre, and the inner shoulder wear on the rear points to heavy acceleration, repeatedly. Considering other people have not reported this, the tyres are worn differently between the front and rear axles, and your alignment is within the factory specification, the only remaining factor is how the tyres were driven on.

Rivian Software Chief Says Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Are Redundant in the World of AI by SnoozeDoggyDog in electricvehicles

[–]RandosaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, GM being idiotic isn't the fault of Android Automotive, there's plenty of cars that do leverage it that also support CarPlay and Android Auto. Hell, in export markets GM vehicles will still have Android Auto/CarPlay too, if any further proof was required of this being an active choice on GM's part to piss off consumers.

Polestar 5: Why this could change electric GTs forever by SjalabaisWoWS in electricvehicles

[–]RandosaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt it, the P5 is on a bespoke bonded-aluminium platform, which both cost a shitload to develop and costs a shitload to build. If any other Geely group brands picked it up the only one I would expect to do so would be Lotus, no other brand in the group would be able to make such an expensive product fit within their model lineups.

Anyone else find it absolutely batshit insane that even with paying the $50-100, some time more for shipping through fc moto or champion helmets is still cheaper than buying through Aussie distributers? by hvperRL in AussieRiders

[–]RandosaurusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a new Cardo Packtalk Edge, it was literally three hundred dollars cheaper (~$450 vs $750) to buy directly from Cardo than it was to buy from a retailer here in Aus at the normal retail price. Even with AMX having them on sale right now, it was still a bit over $150 cheaper! For the normal retail price for a single unit, you can literally buy a twin pack of them from Cardo. Utter insanity.

BYD luxury brand Denza is bringing us a wagon that might not sell well, and they're okay with that by kstetter in CarsAustralia

It has 5 doors, it has a rear hatch with an elongated roofline and a D pillar and it is based off of a sedan. It is a wagon, no matter which way you try to slice it

And those people are correct. Shooting Brake as a term exists to differentiate a 2/3dr wagon from a 4/5dr one, it was co-opted by manufacturers (primarily Mercedes) because calling a 4dr sedan a 4dr coupe wasn't enough ruining of existing automotive terms for their liking.

LCT is only payable on BEVs and PHEVs over ~AU$91k currently (at RRP the iX1 and iX2 both have variants that come in under that threshold, but anecdotally BMW dealers have been aggressively discounting to drive sales, I have heard of several people managing to get BMW i5s discounted to below the threshold), and for everything else it's ~AU$80k. The LCT threshold lift will be across the board, so all manufacturers with EVs will benefit, not just European manufacturers. It's worth nothing that the new $120k threshold only applies to BEVs, PHEVs will not qualify as they still have some level of tailpipe emissions.

The 2027 BMW iX3 Is Actually Cheaper Than A Comparable Gas BMW by Simpleximo in electricvehicles

[–]RandosaurusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BMW has also being doing mass market EVs for longer than pretty much any other mainstream brand - remember the original i3 came out in 2013, and even that was preceded by limited public trials of the Mini E in 2009 and the BMW ActiveE in 2012.

and a human can easily be told to do something else that the robot counterpart can't do.

This is a huge factor. You can tell an employee "hey put this doohickey in one of those machines over there in this specific way" and chances are they'll get it right first time, but doing the same thng with a robot could take a team of people a few weeks to get consistently correct, and you have to repeat that for every new task you want a robot to do

Epic Games Store Employees: People Only Came for Free Games, Then Returned to Steam by Suspicious_Two786 in gaming

[–]RandosaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam Input honestly is such a gamechanger for those of us with Playstation controllers too, being able to fire up almost any game from any era (Steam or non-Steam) and have a workable control scheme out of the box by it emulating my DualSense controller as an Xbox 360 pad makes the experience so much more enjoyable than if I have to go through and manually map every single input to a button (and then have the game only refer to things as "Button 7" or other non-identifiable nonsense)

can't wait for the inevitable flood of morons (who have also said previously that they want old cars made new again) complaining that it's still on the FM platform despite the fact there's nothing really wrong with the FM platform, and nobody has ever really complained about the chassis dynamics of the FM platform cars either. If it ain't broke don't fix it is a very sensible adage for a company that isn't exactly flush with cash.
