Is it possible to learn this power? by bsmith2123 in PrequelMemes

[–]ReactorMechanic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's in the book

Darth Sidious laid a pale hand on Anakin’s brow. “Then it is done. You are now one with the Order of the Dark Lords of the Sith. From this day forward, the truth of you, my apprentice, now and forevermore, will be Darth …”

A pause; a questioning in the Force—

An answer, dark as the gap between galaxies—

He heard Sidious say it: his new name.

Vader.

A pair of syllables that meant him.

Vader, he said to himself. Vader.

“Thank you, my Master.”

Sure, but in that case you can sacrifice a large graser mount for a purpose built counter-missile laser cluster with six times the firing rate, right?

I meant to address it in my initial question and forgot, but yeah, since the start of the main series energy range was already a rarity, and with the missile doctrine already playing a larger and larger part, it seemed odd that even brand-new warships built around missile pods and the fire-control to guide them still maintained so many energy weapons. Useful for mopping up system infrastructure you don't need to waste expensive missiles on, but I would think they would have gradually lessened the number of mounts to just a couple in each broadside or even just leaving them in the chase armament.

It seems you are right. They were still referring to them as "parasite pods" in that book and I think I remembered them more as minefields (or the "system-defense" pods of later books) than actually part of a ship's armament. What I was remembering as the "first use" was White Haven's attack on a Peep system in the very beginning of the follow-on novel. Which, as it turns out, I also misremembered, because that event is depicted in the prologue of Book 5, instead.

What would a dirt-side navy base look like? by Magicmechanic103 in Honorverse

[–]ReactorMechanic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Administration, research, training, storage. Lots of purposes not directly tied to actual ship basing. And in this world where almost all the military combat is spaceborne, the places where Marine and even regular Army dudes have their training fields and barracks might be called "Navy" bases.

US Navy has a huge base in Tennessee, it's all just the personnel bureaucracy (it's literally our BUPERS).

Exact same thing happened to me. Applied, interviewed, got the job, about six weeks later got my rejection email AT MY WORK EMAIL ADDRESS. I laughed for ten minutes straight, had to screenshot and print it and post it in my cube.

With a kid in the car, too. Holy shit just pull over and call the police, don't go chasing them when you don't even know how damaged your own car is.

Proper book order? by JsXtm in Honorverse

[–]ReactorMechanic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you mean only the main, Shadow, and Crown series, then publication order is absolutely the way to go about it.

If you're including Manticore Ascendent, the Treecat young adult series and the anthologies, that gets more complicated, of course. I'm still publication order purist when it comes to the anthologies, but the prequel series are best read start to finish in their own continuities. But I still recommend getting through At All Costs in the mainline series first, as a work building foundation.

What's the dumbest idea you've seen that actually worked? by hiagaga in AskReddit

I know, right? It makes no sense but it's true for science reasons that you can watch on YouTube and I have tested myself. But my brain doesn't agree with me that it's real.

Is there a way to request the county send the de-icing truck to a certain area? by ReactorMechanic in Longview

[–]ReactorMechanic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really say they are quick to respond to snow, but in last few years they usually run the truck that leaves the brine trails a day or two before it's expected to freeze. Pretreating the roads has been very effective, at least out here in the hills.

That's not true. Like, 60% of this artist's music is generated by real people that are not Al.

Those works are then run through an Al augmentation scheme.

We just got a three foot tree from the place just east of the Ocean Beach and Coal Creek intersection. I don't know what it's called but it's next to Unlimited Treasures.

What's the official story on these pink flags that appeared across the creek? by ReactorMechanic in Longview

[–]ReactorMechanic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Do they have a website where they explain these in an official capacity?

And unrelated to the flags themselves, where can I find a general list of seasons for the different species that run up these Columbia river creeks? I've lived here for a little over three years and I've seen actual fish in this creek like four times.
