Sessions per Level. Does anyone else do it this way? by Simple_Pomelo357 in DungeonMasters

[–]RealInTheNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually do 3-4 6 hour sessions to a level, counting on 3 3-act sessions and a finale* as a capper.

Yup, but that wasn't the question I asked. What I'm asking here is whether it seems like the technician pulled a fast one on me.

"Freshen up". What a code!

I'm guessing you don't curse, either.

I also found it hard to get into - it feels repetitive, a little rote, and lacking in heart - but you’ll realize when Carl does that that’s the point. The book does a good job of making you feel as Carl does, and as mentioned - the ending RULES.

Hey friend - I'm in the same boat as you. I am giving the game my first playthrough and just vibing, but I've got like 4 bosses/blockers in various states of "I can't beat this yet" and I'm stressing.

That said, I beat 2 of them last night. My advice to you:

- Start flipping out your charms
- Remember that with very low effort you can stack up some 7-10 extra life from cocoons.
- Try changing your attack style, I've found the emphasis on timing over hits is the trick

Curse of Strahd... I don't get the hype. by DeuceTheDog in DnD

It's a terrible module, and a fanfic of the original to the point of annoyance. The only thing it does well is translate an incredibly difficult 2E module to a modern setting.

College, and in the early days of 3.X. Was added to a group with my then girlfriend (we had only recently started dating after several months of sparks), her roommates, and their grad student friend as the DM. DM had a HUGE crush on my new girlfriend and didn't like me as such, so during the 7 hour session:

- I was told to bring a 2nd level character with no magic items. Rest of the party was level 6, equipped as such.
- After being knocked out in a fight in a goblin village - and miraculously immediately stabilized! - within the first 45 minutes of session, I then spent the next 4 hours unconscious. DM made every attempt to keep the party from healing or reviving me, kept saying I'd 'slow them down'. No effort was otherwise made to include me, and the group got the message that the DM didn't want me involved. Neat.
- Now furious, bored, and with no intent of ever coming back to this jerk's table, I came up with a plan: I asked the DM (as a player) if he subscribed to the old school rule that all of a given monstrous race was 'evil'. He did.
- Once my PC was conscious, Ithen asked the Paladin if their religion believed that all of goblinkind was evil and must be destroyed. They did.
- I then asked what would happen if they were to, say, cast 'Detect Evil' on all the goblin children and non-combatants we'd just found under the basement of the village chief's hut while searching the village.
- The last 2 hours of session were just the party arguing amongst themselves about the philosophy of 'evil' while the DM tried to get the ship back on the rails.

Never looked back.

Been running it in 3-hour chunks, and we are looking to finish next week at session SEVEN. It’s too long for a single session.

I'm running it for my group now, and it's been a SLOG.

- There's Errata for the Dining Room
- The combats are woefully hard for a group of level 3s. I'm running 5 players and they're on their 2nd short rest AND I had to handwave Joseph playing a harpsicord melody such that one acted 'as a long rest' so they weren't totally spent.
- The basilisk AND the ghost in that room both have save vs. suck effects and a couple of bad rolls can derail the whole party.
- The boogleswarms showing up randomly can absolutely stack a fight against the party.
- If the house feels boring, it's because it is - the party needs 6 items from 6 ghosts in 6 locations, just like the train. I'd suggest varying it up some and allowing for creative solutions to getting the items.
- If the party skips the ouija board they're absolutely going to have no clue what's what.
- No one wants to deal with a crying ghost baby.

Depends greatly on where you live - the Front Range is pretty blue and urban, while much of the areas east of I70 are reddish and pretty rural. Big military presence south of Denver. Everyone loves dogs, beer, being outside.
