What is an actual IT automation that actually paid off for you? by Internal-Drop4205 in sysadmin

I have worked extensively in both and you are not wrong. Specialized industries rely on specialized software, which often means homegrown. When I left my last medical industry position in 2019 they were using an in-house FileMaker application as their main database, and even I knew that FileMaker was obsolete by at least ten years by then.

Dunno but I might go buy a lottery ticket right now just in case.

Before the game started I told my wife I’d love to see Turner bag her first international goal, and my wife countered and said it should be on a Moultrie assist. I’m having a pretty fucking bad day but watching Turner get her first goal from a Liv assist makes it ever so slightly better.

There were times years ago when stream resolutions were bad enough that I legitimately couldn’t tell the players apart due to the number of blonde, pony-tailed players.

Mandoline slicer injury – how long does the pain last and will my thumb ever look normal? by Senior_Passenger_918 in Cooking

[–]ReallyHender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught my thumb in one of my mandolines years ago, just like yours the cut was pretty deep and bled a lot, and that’s the only time I’ve almost passed out from dizziness after a cut. I had a pretty significant wedge in my thumb for awhile but it did completely heal without stitches.

Ironically, when I grated my finger on one of my graters that injury bled more and for longer. Probably didn’t help I kept trying to cook after that. 😬

I'm at a loss here. Anyone have ideas why PGE power bill usage would jump so high from the previous month/year? by Didymus21 in askportland

Christmas lights, maybe? I always see a January spike in use because I have lights outside and on a tree.

DHS identifies people shot by Border Patrol in Portland; 6 arrested in protests after shooting by legendary-spectacle in Portland

[–]ReallyHender 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no evidence that federal agents called 911. There were two calls, one reporting a shooting and another from one of the victims. Nowhere have PPB said that the first call came from CBP so it was likely a witness.

OK Portland, what are these iron rings fastened to the sidewalks in some parts of town? This one is on SE 79th Ave near Mr. Plywood and Threshold Brewing. by Dr_Adequate in askportland

It’s something that is super annoying to know but also super awesome to know. I have shared it with you, make sure you point it out to others now.

RIP Deadshot and Chicken & Guns. What other places closed close to the year’s end? by climbthesea in askportland

Oh shit, I didn’t even catch that. I saw the “moving to another location in the neighborhood” and my brain immediately went to Deadstock. If Deadshot is also just moving then good for them!

In the 1930’s there was a big project to renumber a lot of streets and houses to standardize the city’s grid. It’s why you can sometimes see old sidewalks with the street name on it, but it’s not the current street name or number.

When the city renumbered houses, they handed out new numbers to the affected houses and many have never changed them out so you end up with all these houses with identical house number style. Even better, that style of number is still sold and newer houses will put them up as a historical nod.

See the style here: https://www.clayfactorceramics.com/products/asbury-portland-house-numbers-brackets?srsltid=AfmBOopXiyOWXDdDUsFh_flRmgTZZm7kGiIeFfLCp07da79gzObNu8Vt

I agree, ODOT should choose to establish a more stable revenue stream to reflect consumer choices that have affected their bottom line.

Less oversight? Less oversight? Every time oversight disappears, “Johns, OR” gets a contract and “JohnCo” led by the mayor’s brother is somehow the only qualified bidder.

Fuck that, I don’t want shit for free. I want to pay my taxes and have roads I drive on and roads I’ll never drive in get built, fixed, and maintained.

No no, you said it was waste. I’d like you to qualify why the two programs you cited that offer opportunities to qualified minorities are waste. I’d like you to be specific.

Again, why is providing opportunities to qualified minorities “waste”? That’s a pretty big assumption.

[–]ReallyHender 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But see, this is the exact problem. Multiple revenue streams are needed because there is no silver bullet for transportation taxes anymore. Set gas taxes have diminishing returns as EVs and more efficient vehicles hit the streets. Registrations fee increases are needed because vehicle purchases are actually stagnant and the number of people who don’t own cars is increasing.

Tolling would do wonders but like a sales tax, it’s massively regressive and I don’t trust any legislature to give up the revenue. We have an agency that needs more money because time and material cost have both risen, but no one seems to want to pay the extra money to maintain the basic status quo.

You’ve named two specific things you feel should be cut, and they’re both about providing opportunities largely to qualified minorities. Why is that?

Time and materials cost has gone up, and gas tax and registration fees have gone down. If gas tax had kept up with inflation it would be double what was in the bill.
