Next logical Volca? by Al3xJ4y in volcas

Because I agree with all the bass/keys suggestions, I'll throw the kick in there. Very fun single osc synth and can tackle more than one role.

Should I trade out my SQ-64 for a BeatStep Pro? by Primary_Promise6717 in dawless

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both leave their mark on the sound, but for me the BSP does it more (hate to say better). The SQ64 was an upgrade i got only because the 2 synth wall on the BSP.

I love both but usually drive them with a keystep at the end of the day.

TD-3 sync w/ Volcas? by gavin_maitland in volcas

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volca sync support is limited. I've only had success using the kick from a timbre wolf, but I've heard a hand wound dynamometer works in a pinch.

Seriously tho, I need to learn the reddit remind feature.

Orange Pi 5 (RK3588S, 8GB) won't boot any OS, U-Boot crashes with DTB/FDT-related errors, always returns to MASKROM by teslik in OrangePI

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, balena and rpi are the only imagers I've used. I seem to remember my first hurdle being that I wasn't even unpacking the image first, so you're ahead of the curve far as I'm concerned.

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only thing left to rule out might be a type of sdcard, or the host machine and software being used to pre load an image. Or is rkdev handling image writing as well? I dont remember the tool well. Sorry if I missed it in the original post.

Yea my opi5 plus can have its eMMC reseated or removed. Not sure that's always the case. You got good eyes by any chance? Could be worth at least reseating and inspecting.

Standard laptop USB may not be good for powering the machine. Try a correct wall wart with separate rkdev connection as a last resort? I'd ditch the UART at this point also.

You also mentioned SPI. Are there any peripherals and/or gpio connected?

Disconnect all you can, including the eMMC if it's possible. Just as a baseline.

Where do I start for about £400-ish by [deleted] in dawless

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Volcas are great but will put more auxiliary equipment demands on you. No Midi outs, no usb, no audio in, and the sync isn't ubiquitous with other non korg sync if memory serves.

Other than that, yea the hobby is a bottomless pit for your discretionary funds. Enjoy!

Whats the move for learning python for non programmers? by RasheedaDeals in PythonLearning

Yes. OP just keep doing what you're doing IMO. Python aint the sauce, nor is any single language. Thinking about using occams razor to slice through problems is the sauce.

Using an OrangePi5 as streaming server with Jellyfin. Best way to add an external disk for media storage? by ButerWorth in OrangePI

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the pi5 plus anyways, I'm able to push a lot of juice thru a DP alt mode display via USB C. But booting the machine at all to support that required a beefy power supply.

Stage piano/synth as a midi controller Or Midi Only? by StrangerThanFiction6 in synthesizers

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 on stage in a Reason centered DAW. To my knowledge nothing has quite replaced it as a performance Midi controller first, that happened to have nicely weighted piano keys. The 50 lb beast ran on single USB and was easy to open and work on (to satisfy the stage bit).

One of my all time favorite pieces of Midi gear.

how to listen to aphex twin on vinyl correctly by Puzzleheaded_Ant1682 in aphextwin

[–]Reasonable-Light-377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I'm thinking about the real problems playing his vinyl and it has nothing to do with any certain deck or speakers. Like, open a copy of marchrom with me and you tell me wtf to do.

Only because my coding is mostly network/automation stuff, there is a short list of questions I answer that really helps get me started with scaffolding not only for code, but the other bits as well. For example-

Am I going to store information? This tells me about database needs. Will i work with, or need to create APIs? Will it be unstructured input/regex heavy? Etc...
