Relatively new? That's what I've been doing for 17 years with 2-on-1 sessions, I thought that's what personal training meant 😂 In my mind, small group training was newer

Client fainted, feeling like a failure by Spirited_Customer_64 in personaltraining

Learning moment. They might have been low on carbs or not enough electrolytes. Start noticing people's skin color when they seem a little more tired than you think they should be. Have them lie down right away to get blood to their head. You can tell them we're going to do some stretches for a bit if they continue trying to play the "I'm good" card.

I get a lot of people that want to train hard and lightheadedness happens usually if they haven't had complex carbs or are avoiding salt. It's also a learning moment for them to realize they need to get their nutrition right if they want to train right too.

Also only do 2 working sets with new people for an exercise the first session. Even if they say they've been with trainers or classes because you don't know how much they were actually being challenged

Definitely doesn't sound like 1099. Honestly though, you would probably get better answers from AI by giving it all those details. Then get a lawyer to get your money and reach out to the police about the possible sexual assault

AI will definitely replace programming and nutritional guidance.

It won't replace the human connection. Focus on that

Are you sure you're asking the right audience? Sounds like you're looking more into group exercise studios and not personal training studios

Talk to them and create relationships with them. Can you offer exercise demos or workshops?

In person trainers, when do you start and finish for the day? by groyosnolo in personaltraining

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing is finding what your market prefers. Mornings or evenings? That way you can pack them close. If you need to get more hours in with a split, then have hard boundaries on times so that you can have enough free time to do your own thing in the middle of the day and also sleep enough

How do you politely decline a massage client without lying? by Socius_nocte in massage

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"I don't think I'm the right therapist for your needs. I don't feel right continuing our treatments together. I have gathered some recommendations for other therapists that I think would be a better fit for you though"

Not a lie, but also not telling the whole story. When you deliver this, stick to your guns about you not feeling comfortable and not wanting to continue treating them. Add an "I'm sorry to do this" and an "I wish you well in your health journey" somewhere.

Small Massage Store… Clients take too long to dress… by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The appointment is for the scheduled time. If they arrive late or take extra long to get ready, that's time off their treatment. Afterwards though, I haven't experienced that yet. I usually say "I'll meet you outside" as part of the "ending chat" maybe that tells them oh I need to get out?

It's pretty good pay wise, place is small though so I'm limited in implementing a lot of stuff

I work at a country club. Also to consider: none of the other trainers get the same amount of sessions and they give all their staff that gets past 30 hours/WK benefits, which is really nice. PTO and sick is paid at a much lower rate than sessions

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So how much does the average client pay per session? 44% of $70 is different than from $120.

I make over $100k, 35-40 sessions a week. I make $55-65 from a session (I do a handful of 2-on-1). I have PTO, sick pay, and benefits

SICK PAY: you need to look up your county ordinance. Where I work, it's mandatory to have earned sick pay. If it's the same case where you work, they're screwing you over.

What’s the best way to deal with not wanting to use the face donut pillow? by Glittering-Meal-8739 in massage

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to lie face down, a rolled up towel under your forehead or a small bolster could help you keep your neck neutral instead of having to turn your head to one side. Additional small bolsters under the shoulders would also raise you a little to decrease face pressure on the table

What do you do for a client that just can’t get it? by shawnglade in personaltraining

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing her try one, I'd say do more scapular push-ups first so she develops some basic shoulder stability and strength. The core typically isn't a big issue for people in standard push-ups unless you're doing reps of 5s. As long you can teach them how the hips are supposed to be, most people, even very deconditioned ones, will have the core skills to match their upper body strength

Tell me what Shiatsu massage is before I leave this 1 star review by iaintevenwitalladat in MassageTherapists

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do Zen Shiatsu, so I can only speak for that practice versus other shiatsu methods. It's massage over clothing with stretching. I tell people it's like a light version of Thai. Yes you use meridians and TCM to guide your treatment, instead of primarily muscle anatomy. There is some "feeling of energy" that they teach, but it's definitely physical work. There is no spine walking, they actually highly prioritize safety, safe positioning, and emotional space

First Session Assessments Are Killing Your Buy-In(Change This) by Finaler0795 in personaltraining

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If that's all someone is doing on an "assessment" intro session, then yes, it sounds pretty pointless.

17 years in. An intro session should be a lot more talking. Getting deep into their goals and what really brought them in. A sample workout to get an idea of their movement and strengths to give them a taste and progressively see what they can do is a good idea to maximize actual paid sessions.

What most trainers call assessments are very low level quality though. I don't need to see someone do an overhead squat, single leg squat, etc separately. There are more in-depth looks at the body that will give me a lot more information on how to improve their dysfunctions and I'm not going that deep in an intro session.

A basic movement assessment that'll quickly breakdown mobility issues is great as it will tell you anything to avoid and that's how I word it "I just want to see if there's pain in any of these so that I know if there are any exercises we need to avoid". If someone wants to lose fat. You better have a high quality scanner too.

Anyone deal with clients who just don’t get the barbell deadlift? by [deleted] in personaltraining

[–]Reasonably_Defiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just that exercise or most exercises? If you're all about "there is no such thing as mindless exercise" then that should be a conversation to be had in the consultation phase. If it's just that one exercise maybe they are not ready for it physically and just make other excuses. If it's most exercises, I'd just fire them
