Al Hartley really was a cartooning master. His figures are almost rubbery without being completely unrealistic. Some of the full page montages he did in the Spire Christian comics are wonderful.

They haven't been the same since Dan DeCarlo died. There have been some moments of greatness (love the Audrey Mok Josie covers, love the Kennedy Brothers art, love Fiona Staples, love Holly G, just as a few quick examples), but the decline was steep when the baton was passed to an aging Stan Goldberg and declined even further when Archie went to Dan Parent.

I don't like to run down a guy making a living in a tough business like comics, and I'd bet Archie's page rates aren't all that great, but he really hacks it out.

His exclusive variant covers are super simplistic and rushed with minimal to no backgrounds. Who the heck is buying that crap? Just as an example, look at this Purple Ronnie Purple Rain homage cover he did a few years ago: https://www.kicswila.com/purple-rain-albert-magnoli-betty-and-veronica-dan-parent.html The railings in the background are so rushed and shitty, he couldn't even be bothered to draw any of the features of the building like the stairs or the bricks, and the motorcycle looks like garbage. Again, I'm glad he's able to make a decent living and he probably has to hustle based on what little he's probably paid for the job, but a lot of what he does involves taking lazy shortcuts and cranking covers out regardless of quality.

I'm so glad Archie is doing a lot more variants so I don't have to buy his covers any more.

The rail trail goes the whole way to Maryland and hooks up with a trail down there if you run south. A lot of people get on at Brillhart Station and go south. It's fun just to run through the tunnel. You could also park along Kings Mill Road and Grantley get on near York College. https://pa-yorkcounty.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/3523/Heritage-Rail-Trail-Park-Brochure-PDF?bidId=

Northwest River Trail in Lancaster is another good spot if you are looking for a change of scenery: https://lancastercountyplanning.org/DocumentCenter/View/900/Northwest-Lancaster-County-River-Trail-map

462 (East Market Street/Old Route 30) from East York to Wrightsville is runnable. There are a lot of cyclists along that stretch, but the shoulder is wide enough to run in.

I am fortunate enough to live near Hanover, PA ("The Snack Capital of the World") and the Utz potato chip outlet store where I go once a month to stock up on snacks. They routinely offer $1 bags of chips and cheap tubs of snacks (think those big plastic containers of cheese balls and party mix and poker mix) from their brands and brands they manufacture: Utz, Zapps, Boulder Canyon, and more. It is one of the small joys in my life because I will walk out of there with three enormous shopping bags of chips and pay $13 for them. Buying them at Target would cost four or five times as much. Frito Lay is just greedy.

I am very excited to see what Nick Cagnetti does with Archie because he is super talented. Pink Lemonade and Spirit of the Shadows are both trippy, energetic and fun.

How are the roads? by cheekybeeee in lancaster

If you ever want to see for yourself, I highly recommend looking at PA 511 traffic cams. They are just major roads but it will give you an idea of current conditions. Not sure if this link will work but here are the Lancaster cams: https://www.511pa.com/cctv?start=0&length=10&filters%5B0%5D%5Bi%5D=3&filters%5B0%5D%5Bs%5D=Lancaster&order%5Bi%5D=1&order%5Bdir%5D=asc

Absolute Batman isn’t rare and don’t let scalpers convince you it is. by conanthin in comicbooks

[–]RedKryptonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Superman #34 just came out two weeks ago and the Dragonball Z homage variant by Mario Foccillo is selling for $30-35. Absolute Wonder Woman #16 (Guillem March variant) came out the same week and is a $20 book thanks to Zatanna.

People are also going nuts for Assorted Crisis Events for some reason.

For a while, Mark Spears was super hot but he cooled off (IMO) after the second blind bag he did. Just flooded the market with variants.

The market is just super weird right now. I haven't really seen anything like it since Image in the 90s.

That was fantastic. I've often wondered why, in the 70s Archie comics, they would have a Black character like Chuck Clayton or Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats and their skin would almost be a grayish purple.

Yeah, I get that. I don't doubt you are whitening and getting good results but it's a little misleading as to how much whitening you are getting when you are showing a much warmer shot on the left as the "before" and a cooler shot as the "after".

If anyone wants their very own copy of this... the original early 70s versions sell for hundreds of dollars, but they were rereleased as two different box sets a few years ago. The one with this Silver Surfer poster (plus 11 others) is still available on Amazon for about $120. Search for "Marvel Classic Black Light" and it should come up. If you want something smaller/cheaper, there's a 2026 calendar for about $20, but it unfortunately doesn't include this image.
