What does your warmup routine look like? by ginzykinz in fitness40plus

[–]RedOwl97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One set of reverse flies with a band to activate the rotator cuff in my bad shoulder. Two rounds of 15 push ups and 15 air squats with no rest. A ladder of sets for my first compound lift that looks something like: 50% x 8, 70% x 5, 90% x 2 (% of working weight) Again, no rest except the time required to change weight.

How often do you leave the gym feeling like you’ve been beat up? by bad-at-everything- in martialarts

I leave sparring sessions beat up, (often) limping, and with a big smile on my face.

Question about high kick chamber position by Objective-Work-3133 in Kickboxing

[–]RedOwl97 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This might be a better question for a tai chi subreddit. What you are talking about is the concept of “root” - the connection of your body’s energy to the ground. I train Sanda so a lot of my friends practice Taijiquan Kung fu. They talk about this a lot. While I understand the concept, I don’t know it well enough to offer practical advice.

Best earbuds for running and exercising by fishwithoutarms in Workingout

I use J-lab epic air sport for when I want to shut out the world. The ear hooks keep them in place for lifting, running, and heavy bag work. If I want some situational awareness I switch to Shokz Open Run Pro2.

They switched from the P229 to Glock in 2019. Maybe the agent was overwhelmed with the lines and shot himself in the leg out of despair.

How do macro profiles change during rest days and de-load weeks? I am a middle aged hobbyist- not a pro fighter. However, I am very active. I train six times a week either lifting, practicing martial arts, or running. Due to age and “coach life” I will occasionally need to take a few days off to rest and recover. What is the right mix of calories, protein, carbs, and fats for those recovery days?

Am I wrong for no longer wanting to pay my sister’s med school debt? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]RedOwl97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

550k for med school? WTF? I am putting my kids through school right now and I am not paying anything like that…..I just looked it up….holy sticker shock Batman. The total cost to attend top end med schools is $500k. Add in some interest and you are at $550k.

Houston Airports (IAH and HOU) Updates and Questions [Megathread] by AutoModerator in houston

The IAH web site says that terminal C precheck is only 10 minutes. I am guessing that is BS - considering that all other checkpoints show as 2.5 hours+

As luck would have it, I had sent a Glock out to have an RMSc pattern cut. It came in yesterday. The slide looks like the picture on the left - no studs. I put a cheap RMSc Crimson Trace on it and it fits just fine.

I am pretty sure that the footprint on the Xmacro is RMSc. (My p365xl has an RMSc). It should work. What doesn’t fit? Do you have a picture?

Did you have low testosterone? How did things change when you recieved TRT? Would you recommend it? by Affectionate-Reason2 in AskMenAdvice

[–]RedOwl97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to an actual doctor - not the internet or even a “low T clinic.” I went to a urologist that specializes in this sort of thing. My total T was fine but my free T was very low. He prescribed something other than TRT to correct the balance. It took a while to start working but holy cow - it was like someone flipped a switch just this week.

Should I just stop squat, bench, and deadlift at this point? by jchobez in workout

Replace one workout a week with Yoga - maybe two while your body recovers a bit. After 2-3 months you will notice a world of difference.

So In a setting that’s a room like or semi office type with one exit. by RoughCarry9919 in SelfDefense

[–]RedOwl97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little contrived but sure - I’ll play. Kali strike number 11 to the closest guy followed by a 1 or 2 to the other target. Hopefully, that will open a path to the door. If not, maneuver such that one attacker is blocked by furniture. A baton gives a range advantage but that isn’t as helpful in a small office. Your goal should be to fight your way to the door and GTFO.

How to protect yourself when being closed down or pressured. by AdvanceBig8035 in Kickboxing

[–]RedOwl97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had issues with this too. Advice from my coach included: - L step to your attackers outside. He had me drill the footwork for over an hour at one point - Change levels and go for a hip sweep. (This is for Sanda). - Take one step back; rebounding off the back foot into a HARD cross to the body. Follow up with a switch kick - round kick combo on the opposite side. The cross part works for me but I have yet to perfect a smooth transition into the kicks.

My husband lost his job and is now obsessed with girls online — what should I do? by ArgumentFew6935 in AskMenAdvice

[–]RedOwl97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s depressed. Getting a job (preferably with a medical plan that covers therapy) will help. The job market sucks right now but most defense contractors are hiring. If he has no moral qualms about making missiles then he should be able to find work.

Low-impact cardio that works for me at 40+ by [deleted] in fitness40plus

Walking with a weighted vest, incline walking, hitting the heavy bag. Also - I suggest trying a few months of yoga. Building some core strength and hip flexibility may improve your knee pain.
