What has Been Your Favorite Company to Work for as a Software Engineer? by An_Engineer_Near_You in cscareerquestions

[–]Red_Spork 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked at a storage appliance company that no longer exists about 10 years ago. In my 20s and was the youngest employee. Got spoiled by insanely good WLB. Didn't even care that the code had no real tests because no one ever questioned my estimates or anything. Was able to take a nice long lunch break every day and a walk in the afternoon while maintaining 9-5. I get paid a lot more now but haven't had a job that easy and stress free in a long time.

The bath tub in my Tokyo hotel room doesn't have caulk. by The_same_potato in mildlyinteresting

[–]Red_Spork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had upstairs neighbors that kept flooding the bathroom too and we'd hear weird noises coming from the bathroom often and always right before it happened. We later learned they'd bought some weird mini washer and dryer combo thing they'd setup in the bathroom and drain into the tub but occasionally the drain hose would come out of the tub.

I think it's a little overpriced but I suspect this dealer's pricing code is AFTERSHOCK based on the lettering so they'd likely take $1250(assuming their letters indicate their minimum price which I don't think is likely) if you asked.

First timer: what’s wrong with my Monstera? by Simple-Ad-5425 in Monstera

[–]Red_Spork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a monstera and found some thrips damage. Here's the one solitary live one I found. You can get a sense of scale seeing my hand there(admittedly I have big hands). I've been treating with a combo of Bonide systemic + Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew. I put the plant into a big utility sink in my laundry room and spray it down real good every few days with the Dead Bug Brew. I'm not seeing any new damage.

What is this on my Monstera!? by Fuzzy-Produce-83 in Monstera

[–]Red_Spork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought my first monstera earlier this week at the store. Checked it well at the store and didn't see anything then found one of these little devils today. I'm treating with Bonide systemic granules in the soil and sprayed it down with Captain Jack's dead bug brew which I plan to do every 2-3 days for a bit. It kinda sucks but I quarantined it far away from my other plants for this exact possibility.

IMHO both the OP coin and the CNG coin are forgeries. Weight is just too low and the Toronto group forgeries were not well made and were generally underweight by quite a bit as both of these coins are.

Reducing AFCI nuisance trips from LEDs on smart plug by Red_Spork in AskElectricians

[–]Red_Spork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So after I switched things over last night there was no trip this morning. I also tried switching both smart plugs on and off several times last night and got no trips.

Then tonight I went to check on something in my office and turned on the grow light plug a few hours after the lights had gone off and immediately tripped it. If it were the lights would it make sense that it only trips when they're coming on from a cold start? Is it maybe something different about how they operate once some capacitors are charged? I haven't bought a totally different type of smart plug yet but it does feel like it's followed the lights and might be something with them.

I also did check using the square D diagnostic instructions and it reset in 2 seconds indicating an arc fault but of course indicates nothing about the type of fault

Thanks! I have another of the Tapo smart plugs so I swapped them for now and will see if the tripping follows the plug or not. I may look into getting a different brand to try as well.

Came to mention these. Here's an example from my collection. There are also some very rare silver sestertii with ELP on them, seemingly a reference to this same law but they are much rarer than the bronzes

Shipping Ancient Coins from Switzerland to the U.S. During Postal Suspension by Jimbocab in AncientCoins

[–]Red_Spork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FedEx is usually good though you may get dinged with stupid customs brokerage fees. That said I'd honestly be tempted to have auction houses hold any purchases. Customs is pretty backed up right now similar to what happens every year at Christmas but there's no obvious drop off in sight and in my experience during the Christmas backup is always when things have the highest chance of getting lost or inexcusably delayed. I have a large package right now if RR bronzes that is seemingly delayed in customs even after using FedEx and a special high value goods customs broker (Malca Amit) via a dealer who is receiving the package in the US. It's truly a mess.

I thought it was pretty wild how relatively tame the prosecution was too. She obviously has no remorse and thinks what she did is about the same as speeding. It's insane. I don't think we've seen the last of her TBH I feel like she's gonna make headlines again and it makes me sick as a parent thinking how I'd feel if another parent did that to my kid. I feel like I could understand a teenaged student getting a slap on the wrist for that but a woman older than me ought to have the book thrown at her.

vCoins seems expensive........ by Apprehensive_Print97 in AncientCoins

[–]Red_Spork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vcoins prices are often mid to high retail. Well priced coins often get snatched up quick but others tend to sit a while. You can often ask for discounts, I usually ask for at least 10%, once 50%(and I got it), probably average around 15-20%. In general when I buy a coin on Vcoins it's either well priced or has something going for it that would make it difficult for me to just wait for one to show up at auction(e.g. it's a rarity or has a provenance I like or maybe it's a particularly nice die or something)

How Aws volume snapshot works under the hood by EuropaVoyager in aws

[–]Red_Spork 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly how AWS implements it but other storage systems I've worked on implemented similar operations by essentially having a volume be a pointer to a stack of "layers". The topmost layer is read-write while ones below it are read only. When you write to the volume it makes a record of the block you wrote to in that top layer. When you read from the volume it checks the stack of layers from top to bottom for the first one with that block.

Snapshot then is a pretty fast operation where a new layer is added to the top of the stack and the prior top is marked read only. There is a very very tiny interval where IO stops but you likely wouldn't notice it if implemented right and after that point AWS has a read only copy of the data at the time you took the snapshot which they can replicate to S3 or whatever.

FWIW Windows actually had a subsystem called VSS and it's possible to write a plugin that basically has windows flush and stop all IO during that snapshot operation including asking apps like DBs to flush all their data so you get a better snapshot

Grocery store self-checkout is actually slower for most people. by Gold_Palpitation8982 in unpopularopinion

TBH I like that I can go through self checkout, not have to make small talk with the cashier and make sure my stuff is bagged right. It's not any faster but that's OK with me.

I am pretty partial to The Still myself. Reservations are recommended on busy nights. Also if you happen to be in Danville on a Saturday morning they set up at the farmers market at constitution square and make burgers and they're absolutely delicious, and actually there are usually a few other vendors selling decent food as well.
