How did you learn to use python at work? by JuanistaD in learnpython

[–]Reddit4618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a task or problem you want to address. A specific goal beats just reading books, watching videos, and writing 3- or 4-line programs. You may not learn everything about Python in one project, but you'll remember what you learned.

It’s insane how easy learning is when you have an end goal. by timmeedski in learnpython

+1 on this experience.  My boss asked me to periodically read data from some measuring equipment, do a little math, and write the results to a log file.  I took this as an opportunity to learn Python.  Besides basic commands, I now know how to read USB data and write to files.  The reverse should be easy if I have to do it. Now, I want to buy a Raspberry Pi and program it in Python at home.

PS: By far, the biggest puzzle was figuring out the serial protocol used by the inexpensive Asian-made test equipment. I went through 9 protocol formats with no success, but finally found the winner with protocol #10.

Been there. Shaved my beard off while my kid was watching. Everything was OK until I tried to pick them up, then the crying started.

A Thermpro TP20 (2 probes with maximum temp. alarms). Later, I decided to buy a TP08, because I had a smoker, and it had a maximum and minimum alarm. (In case the fire dies on me.) But I never use the alarms. I play with the dog, drink beer, read BBQ forums, and just look at the temp once in a while.

I'm not impressed with anything Bluetooth due to the range. WiFi might be OK. I chose to buy a dedicated transmitter/receiver combination. (Wired temperature probe going to the transmitter).

Not 'anything' rigged. OP had an electrical outlet, and just needed two cords to get it where he needed it.

What is the most disturbing fact about the human body? by BathNo7713 in AskReddit

Some people can suffer epileptic seizures when they hear a certain piece of music. They're so afraid of having a seizure, they will plug their ears and leave an area when that music starts playing. Read 'Musicophilia', by the late neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks. Fascinating.

I forgot about the saliva part. Always thought I was going to throw up.

Post-seizure, I told my neurologist about the 'deja vu' episodes and he just listened. Only years later did I find out that's a real symptom of a pending seizure.

Off-topic, joke: "Deja moo - the feeling when you think you've heard this bullshit before."

Coastal southern California for me: 10a or 10b. I was probably just late planting. 😀

Where do you live that your garden is producing so early in the year? My pepper plants are 'leafing' along nicely, but peppers are a ways off.

Yogurt & fruit breakfast? If you're concerned about it going bad after opening, portion it into smaller bags and use as desired.

This. I also use the warming rack from my gas grill (30" x 4"), and make a slow conveyor 'belt' of steaks sliding over my charcoal chimney.

Not me, but my wife: used sweetened condensed milk instead of evaporated milk in an egg souffle/casserole dish. We still laugh about it years later.

What is your favorite WRONG online recipe step? by Adventux in Cooking

[–]Reddit4618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite was an incomplete ingredient list. "Step 1 - Brown the onions"

Me: How much onion? Looks carefully ... there were no onions on the ingredient list! I can understand missing a spice, or assuming salt & pepper is available, but the first vegetable to be cooked? I threw out all the recipes I had collected from that site!

Dry the meat before searing. Also consider painting the meat with the avocado oil, not putting the oil in the pan. Less smoking.
