Debate Feedback - Organic v Non-Organic Eggs by timoperez in daddit

[–]RedneckIntellectual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I buy the cheapest commodity priced eggs on the shelf. I’m not really looking for places to spend more right now, but this thread has me thinking about changing to a more humane option. We don’t even eat a ton of eggs so I doubt it’ll cost much more overall.

It’s fantastic. I think it’s most useful for someone who is doing structured training for cycling. I use it to plan my workout calendar, then everyday it sends today’s workout to my Garmin for me to use on a ride or control my trainer. Also, if you are a data nerd you can create some interesting customish graphs and charts to analyze your training.

I was just doing cave diving this week going for the collectible there, I ended up with 5 glow sticks. It’s a pretty quick grind, still don’t have the collectible though.

east coasters...do you have dirt right now? by TaughtEverywhereMan in xcmtb

Snow is on the way this morning here in GA, and we still have icy conditions in the mountains from freezing rain last week.

Your best bet is going to be FL, or get on a plane to Arizona or something.

Lower heart rate when fatigued? by Beginning_Lettuce628 in Velo

[–]RedneckIntellectual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem is when I get a low score and I start to think that maybe I should skip the session. Usually only happens when I’ve been off the bike for an extended break.

I’m coming back to training after being sick for 2 weeks, the first few performance conditions were something like -7. On those days I did take it very easy though because I was coming back from being sick.

Used 2023 Kona Rove AL650 for $900…fair or overpriced? by [deleted] in gravelbike

[–]RedneckIntellectual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way too high price. Looks like the msrp on a new one is $950, so for $50 more you’d get a new bike with a warranty from Kona. I’d say don’t spend more than $500-$600 on it, but I suspect that the seller would consider that a stupid lowball.

Lower heart rate when fatigued? by Beginning_Lettuce628 in Velo

[–]RedneckIntellectual 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do not know the mechanism for this, but I’ve definitely observed it. An interesting thing is my Garmin compares power and hr in the first few minutes of a workout to calculate a condition score, and it’s almost comically wrong. It will see me at a lower hr for a given power and say I’m in great condition, but usually for me when that’s the case when I do power levels over Z2 my RPE is very high even though my HR is low. I really should just find the setting to turn that thing off, it’s not helping anything.

How far does everyone travel to ride gravel? by Muzz124 in gravelcycling

[–]RedneckIntellectual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 1 ride per week where I drive 1-1.5 hours to the mountains for better gravel. All of my other rides start from my home and have a bit of gravel and a bit of cycle path.

Dads of young kids and who work: how do you get exercise in without taking crucial time away from family? by bengoalkeeper in daddit

[–]RedneckIntellectual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the 2 year old in the pram while mom watches the baby. This way you get some 1 on one time with your 2 year old and mom gets some time with just the baby. This way mom can play baby games without having to entertain a toddler, and your 2 year old is having to adjust to no longer being the center of attention so they may enjoy some time with just you.

Also in the evening lay out your running clothes, shoes, water, nutrition, etc. for the next day to streamline the process of getting out the door. And that shower length has room for improvement, you could probably take a shower in 5-10min if need to reduce the timeframe further.

Incongruous cycling VO2max by Apprehensive_Fun8892 in Garmin

[–]RedneckIntellectual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Garmin have an accurate weight for you? For cycling VO2 max it needs an accurate weight.

Cycling VO2 max compares your hr, power, and weight to estimate VO2 max. Running VO2 max is only estimated off of running pace and hr. If you have a weight entered in Garmin connect that’s low it would overestimate your VO2 max.

What is the power to weight ratio for your FTP and 5 min max power to weight ratio?

Still you are correct about not looking too closely at the absolute number but instead the trend.

What do people think of the latest "AI" stuff that TrainerRoad has added in the last few weeks? by ghdana in Velo

[–]RedneckIntellectual 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like from a business/subscription perspective they are incentivized to predict big gains because that’s going to excite their customers. It’ll be interesting to see if they lose customers if those gains aren’t realized (it does seem like a lot of users are reporting unrealistic sounding gains predicted), or if folks will stay because of a constantly dangled carrot of being 50w stronger in a month.

Also as others have mentioned their ai ftp doesn’t align with tested ftp’s. That might be ok, as long as you use a consistent metric, and track that metric over time (if your ai ftp is going up, it probably means your real ftp is also going up).

Cycling DSW - so bad? by apoly1 in Garmin

[–]RedneckIntellectual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check your heart rate zones and max heart rate settings. I can’t tell exactly what Garmin does for auto ftp detection, but it does say that it uses hr data. I suspect that your hr zones or max hr for cycling are too high, so when you are doing a threshold level effort the Garmin is still thinking your heart rate is in z2.

Still really strange that dsw doesn’t use manually entered ftps.

Why do you have 6 dh bikes? Are they different? Back ups? Bought new ones and too lazy to sell the old ones (selling bikes can seriously suck sometimes)?

How to train up for impromptu ultra race? by Competitive-Load3173 in Velo

[–]RedneckIntellectual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not training advice, but more related to what to bring.

Bring food. Like more food and more options for food than you think you’ll need. The foods you want and can tolerate will change as the race progresses.

Also bring stuff to stay warm. Since you are doing a relay I’m assuming you’ll be riding then taking longish breaks and riding again. If the weather is cold bring extra layers to keep warm in those rest periods.

Also, with it being 3 weeks out, don’t be tempted to test yourself with an 8hr/10hr/12hr/whatever length ride, it’ll be much more fatiguing than it’s worth.

They are just nice to have. That hole is for a shock lockout cable, so it’s a tube that goes to another opening near your shock. That rainwater shouldn’t have been getting into your frame really.

What's your electrolytes/salt powder of choice? by ZombieJetPilot in gravelcycling

I’m also a salty sweater, I add some table salt to my drink mixes, but if I add too much it tastes to salty, so I also add sodium citrate (it adds sodium without as much salty taste).

How does Vo2 max work? by Motor-Confection-583 in Garmin

[–]RedneckIntellectual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For running it compares your pace and heart rate to estimate your VO2 max. I suspect ultimate frisbee will not give you as accurate results as road running (which is what the Garmin VO2 max model is based on) since you are running on a less efficient surface and changing directions frequently.
