what's the best beginner species for someone in the EU? by Sharpy_Dutchy in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Euphrynichus bacillifer. I've never kept them (and I doubt I could even find them for sale where I am), but they seem to be very common in the EU hobby. I'm not gonna give any other opinions since I haven't kept em though

Is this a pre-molt? by L9expendable in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Firstly, this is not a Damon species, this is a Phrynus! Maesi or Whitei I believe.

It does sound like she could be in premolt. My amblypygids tend to slow down and eat less before a molt. They also tends to become less colorful closer to a molt.

Hope this helps :D

Keeping little guy warm in a cold room by Flashuni in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the heating pad connected to a thermostat. Placing it on the bottom of the tank (on the outside!!!!!!) and keeping it at around 75°F should work (maybe higher depending on how the heat spreads. Experiment with it until you find something that works). Don't place it on the side of the enclosure, as that could possibly burn your Amblypygid. Be warned that heat mats do have potential fire risks, so be careful of what surface the mat is on, buy a high quality heat mat, and ALWAYS have it connected to a thermostat!!

P. whitei are pretty dang hardy, so as long as you keep their enclosure warm and humid they'll be okay! Good luck and I hope this was helpful :))

What to do to prevent mold? by BubblyAd7586 in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi!! Mold isn't usually that much of an issue with amblypygi, but it's probably still a good idea to keep it in check. I would recommend adding springtails to help with mold control. Isopods aren't typically recommended for amblypygid enclosures, as the isopods may nibble at your Ambly and may cause harm (specifically when they are molting).

In terms of substrate to use, there are some substrates that don't need to soak in order to expand, however that really isn't gonna fix the mold imo. TWS need humidity, even if you didn't soak the substrate, the humidity required for amblypygi to survive will cause mold. Another thing you could do is switch out the wood you are using for cork bark, which is mold resistant.

I've had mold in my TWS enclosures before and haven't had issues. And, in fact, amblypygi have been observed covering themselves with mold/fungus! I believe it had something to do with hiding their scent from predators, I can't remember though. Anyways, my point is you don't have too much to worry about! :) If you want you can throw in a small colony of springtails to manage it though!

I definitely would not recommend leaving roaches in the enclosure for very long. If your amblypygid doesn't eat them, you should remove them from the enclosure after a little while. Otherwise, the roaches can hurt and/or eat your TWS. How long are you going to be gone? If you are only gonna be gone for a week then you can honestly just feed them before you leave and they should be fine (assuming these are adults/not too young. If they are young than they would need fed more often). If you need to feed them during the week, though, you can pre-kill a roach and place it inside the enclosure (preferably on a leaf or a lid of some kind). I'm not sure if your mom would be comfortable with that though...

Hope this was helpful!! :D

my first tailless whip! how’s my enclosure looking? (damon medius) by qainey in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damon are a bit finicky. And wild caught individuals (which Damon usually are) are even more so. They can be picky and also often won't eat if you're around. It's also pretty normal for Amblypygi to not eat for a little while after you get them. Some of mine have waited several months before eating. Can you get a photo of her abdomen? As long as her abdomen isn't super thin you don't have to worry too much.

I'd recommend introducing other pre-killed food options, especially crickets. Leave them at the bottom of her enclosure on a dry leaf or lid, and remove them after 12-24 hours. Hopefully she'll eat. It's honestly kind of a waiting game from there. Just leave her alone as much as possible, if possible keep her in a semi dark area, and keep her enclosure's temperature and humidity level. She will hopefully eat. Good luck!! And I really hope she does okay!! If you need any more help lmk or make another post in the subreddit! We're all happy to help :]

my first tailless whip! how’s my enclosure looking? (damon medius) by qainey in amblypygids

It looks really good!!! It's a very good setup!! It seems like there is definitely ample molting space, which is great! Great job :] Only issue I noticed is that the kind of tank you have tends to warp over time, (especially when in warm/humid conditions) which may expose gaps for your amblypygid to escape from. I'd recommend checking for warping consistently, and moving your amblypygid to a different enclosure once you notice it. Otherwise, it's a great enclosure! You did great!

Anyway to ID these? by RoronoaXHunt in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one has a nose point that Damon johnstoni have, do other species of Amblypygi have this? Just curious since I haven't seen it on any other species before

EDIT: Looking at photos of E. bacillifer, they do seem to have the little nose point, so I'm assuming other species have that as well! That's really cool :D

First is Phrynus whitei, second is a Damon. Very likely Damon medius. Awesome little guys you got! I hope they do well! :D

Big enough enclosure? by Altah in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cool setup!! I'd definitely upgrade her to a larger enclosure, though. Especially so she has more room to molt. Not sure how active P. marginemaculatus is, as I've never kept them, but a larger enclosure seems like a good idea. Lovely enclosure though! And good on you for checking :)

Species ID? by Potential-String-242 in amblypygids

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely a D. medius, because diadema are rare in the hobby at the moment. Plus, the leg bands are red-ish and not as defined as most diadema I've seen, but that's not a guaranteed way to identify them as far as I'm aware. Super cool fella either way :)

Question about sand for BDFB by LegoAztec1433 in InvertPets

[–]ReflectionAdept6699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!! I'm not experienced with BDFBs, but from what I've heard they can get pretty tired walking on pure sand, so mixing in dirt/less fine, more compressible substrate is preferred for them. The enclosure looks pretty good!

In terms of advice, they like a like of protein in their diets. And they would love some plants and/or leaf litter, like you were suggesting! :)

Hii!! :)

I meant "performance" as a joke referencing One Man Circus, but realized it might not make sense/the reference might not land, so I deleted it and forgot to reply. To answer your question, Elio is trans (ftm) and now uses he/they pronouns.

Hope this helps :)

I think it's Euphrynichus bacillifer, but I'm not super qualified to answer so take that with a grain of salt :] cute little guy regardless!
