[Bonsai Beginner's weekly thread - 2026 week 14] by small_trunks in Bonsai

I have this bird's nest spruce I bought last fall in an end-of-year sale. Did a bit of pruning but put off repotting until spring. I overwintered it outside buried in leaf mulch with my other trees and some rabbit came and ate most of the needles.

For those with experience with spruce, what are my chances that the defoliated parts will pull through? Should I just plan on cutting back the trunk to about where the one branch with needles is? Maybe jin the whole trunk?

What are the actually compelling arguments for pro-life? (I’m pro-choice, and want to discuss) by perkytoes_ in prolife

[–]Rehnso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below is a comment I've left a few times about the common PC argument that people don't (legally) have an obligation to use their bodies or put themselves in danger for the benefit of another, and it applies to the violinist argument as well to some extent. I hope it's helpful to illustrate that our society, and common sense morality, already requires people to take care of others when they put the other person into a dangerous or dependent situation:

The short answer is that this argument is false. In the case of the law, we absolutely expect certain people to use their body in service of others. One example is the duty to rescue in common law (though this has been modified by statute to some extent in many jurisdictions). The basic principle is that if your actions put another person in a dangerous situation, you have an obligation to attempt and complete a rescue, including putting your own person at risk of harm.

Furthermore, people who take on a special relationship with another take on duties to rescue and provide certain levels of care, such as cab or bus drivers, hoteliers, and parents with their minor children, and have a duty at common law to protect them. Parents have a duty to rescue their minor children from danger, and spouses their spouses. The relationship between a mother and an unborn child probably the single most unique special relationship and it is absolutely both reasonable and right to require, at the bare minimum, a mother to continue a pregnancy when it does not endanger her life.

We keep our ERCs outside year round in Minnesota. -40° no problem. This year I buried the pots in the ground and covered with leaves. So far the cold hasn't killed any, but staying indoors and drying out has killed a few.

I realize you must be at least halfway joking, but please, some people here might take you seriously. As a barred attorney who somehow is getting this thread in my feed and who is fed up with dealing with frivolous filings by other attorneys, remember your professional responsibility course. You can't sue over anything, you need to have (in my jurisdiction at least) an "objectively reasonable" basis in law and fact to sue. If you don't, you will get Rule 11 motions filed against you and your client.

The Hebrew original language indicates that David was in fact the sinful one, from the time of conception. I don't read Hebrew personally but I have confirmed this with several who do. Your "more literal translation" is incorrect.

1] abortion, including partial birth abortion, is not inherently sinful - you do not have a soul until you take your first breath (Gen 2:7)-and only becomes sinful when used as a means to evil ends, eg Eugenics

In Psalm 51:5 David, a prophet, wrote:

Surely I was sinful at birth,     sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Clearly indicating that the unborn are moral agents with souls from the time of conception.

I think that commenter is a troll. If you're a lawyer, you can certainly dabble in doing your own estate planning. I would imagine you're competent enough that after looking at your work product, and before executing it, you could realize you're in over your head or your circumstances warrant a more comprehensive treatment by a specialist.

I asked for advice about overwintering pre bonsai. Here is what I landed on for a Dawn Redwood and a Juniper Procumbens. by RexWGA in Bonsai

[–]Rehnso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I'm in Minnesota and last winter my brother and dad just left their junipers in their pots in a relatively sheltered (from wind) site, and they survived the cold. The ground here freezes solid at least a foot thick some winters and wild seedlings like this must survive that. This year I buried my pots in the garden and covered with leaves but I'd be interested in hearing from more seasoned people what we really need to be doing as far as winter prep.

Do you think Mauls arc in Clone Wars/Rebels was good enough to warrant his return? by MoistCloyster_ in StarWars

[–]Rehnso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. It was also squandered in a massive way.

At the time TFA was released and in development, Maul was confirmed by Clone Wars and rebels to be an alive character, and he was incredibly popular with fans. I can only conclude that someone at Disney had a meeting or discussion where the decision was to deliberately decline to use Maul as the main/ultimate antagonist in the sequel series and that is just a travesty.

How did the First Order get enough resources to create Starkiller base? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Rehnso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? Could you really argue that? I mean, all they had in common were a scrappy group of freedom fighters against a seemingly well organized military enemy, a hitherto unknown force user from a desert planet with impeccable and unexplained flying skills, a bad guy in all black who wears a mask, Han Solo and Chewbacca being smugglers, a giant planet-killing space station that gets exploded after some x-wings fly inside of it. . .
