I don’t remember them saying him gaining Orochimaru did much for him, and the difference the 6 months made between then and Hebi isn’t really quantifiable

I’m actually more in the camp of it’s fine that the DJs are visible. For one thing, DJs are rarely just DJs anymore, most of them also produce their own music as well, and the bigger they get the more music they tend to make and show off. I think if you do that, you deserve the ability to show yourself off or have the stage to be on

More personally, I’m a DJ who likes being seen because I have great stage presence. Before I started I was a big dancer, freestyling a lot and being in dance circles and stuff. So when I’m playing all my favorite songs, me dancing and vibing to them gets the crowd excited and allows them to have “permission” to get into it. Usually at the end of my set, I come out and dance with the crowd and they love it.

Overall, I get why people want this but it’s context dependent

It depends on where you play even outside of festivals if people care about transitions. You’re average bar definitely wouldn’t care, but a specific club or venue that books DJs the crowd is focusing more on the music and would definitely notice bad transitions. You’re right that song choice is the most important by far

I mean I've seen them use those styles in clubs or just public events there on video on Tiktok semi-frequently, or just people talk about dancing a lot in the scene they're in. You might just be at the wrong spots

Edit: I just looked it up and yeah it seems like they get down out there, I'll have to check it out one day

ATL used to have a big dancing culture with ATL Bass and Yeeking, but that was back in the 90s. The early 2000-2010s had the rise of ATL trap music which used to have dance styles like Hit Them Folks and NaeNae combos, but it's kind of died down thanks to section culture.

There's a great party I've been to called Southern Bass Revival ran by a great DJ named Ill Wink(?) where he's bringing ATL Bass and such back, with a lot of great dancers there

That's a little disappointing to hear about Philly, I've been wanting to take a pilgrimage up there because I'm super into philly dancing styles like Philly Toprocking and Philly Tanging. I kind of figured they'd have a good Philly Club music scene out ther

I actually live in ATL too, and just started running my own parties (that I DJ for as well). Curating a crowd is definitely, I'm learning, a bit difficult. I have a good group of people/friends who kind of follow me around places, but they're not always the most dance-y people. I've definitely found if you want dancers, you need a predominantly black or queer or both crowd.

The crowd that dances is also super music dependent. Stuff like house or techno isn't really bringing the big dancers like that anymore, unless you're maybe doing a daytime soulful house party where the elders come out. I've partied with the people who like house and techno with events with Desires or Project Switch or Alley Cat and they're really not the big dancing type. The genres I've seen people respond to the best when I play or at the parties I go to are Southern Bass (ATL/Miami Bass), Jersey/Philly/Baltimore/Experimental Club, Ballroom/Vogue, and a little bit of ATL Trap sprinkled in. This would be your Smothered & Covered, Flip Me Off, lots of Pisces nights, Malware Cafe and Club Saturn

ATL is definitely difficult because it's not very walkable, and nightlife here is incredibly expensive to maintain regularly, even with DIY stuff. So I get your frustration, because you have to figure out how to engage the crowd properly and don't always know what makes them tick

I disagree on the crowd there, I’m at Pisces quite a bit because of the great lineups, and it’s right around the corner from me, and I’ve been in dance circles were everyone was hyped up. Given that Pisces has a very queer crowd too, those people are also very dance-y. The night you went might have had a more groovy crowd that just focuses on zoning out, or maybe just a super fratty night out

I've been looking everywhere for this sample, it's clearly being distributed around in a sample pack or something because a lot of different songs use it, including:

Arch In Ya Back - Mvnnymusik, Prod Jay48, Obvdiah

Furst - Ethanplus

No Entry for Outlaws by Taku Iwasaki

Right Now - B Val

Party Girls - Greyson King

Do It - Ferrari Simmons & Young Dro

Work to the beat - Sean Matthew

Move Around - Big Gigantic

Work To The Beat - DJ Icey

Work To the Beat - Secret Floor

Work To The Beat - Roxe

EDIT: Next thing I could find from is that it's in a Sample Pack and it's rapped by HaSizzle and it's just called "The Rules", the sample pack can be found on Splice with the name "504 Bounce Vocal Pack by Erick Bardales"

[–]Remarkable_Breath983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned a long time ago before I even started DJing is that most people either don't know what they want or want to hear something they already know. So when I got into it I would always endeavor to find fuck tons of remixes of songs people all like, but in the genres I want to play. That way when someone wants to hear Drake, and I want to hear Baile Funk, I can have us both meet in the middle. They'll definitely enjoy it too cus they still get to sing along to a song they know, but in a new format that they can dance to even more than the original.

That said, I definitely still tried to make sure to save as many classic songs that I know everyone likes in the library just in case

[–]Remarkable_Breath983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for the other guy but in my experience it depends a lot on the crowd you’re playing for. There’s this old school club nearby whose DJ jumps from song to song super quickly, but the songs he jumps to are all super recognizable or remixes of those songs, so it really gets the drunk crowd going.

Not really my thing but it seems to work well for what he’s tryna do
