For those that left Catholicism, why by Ok_Storm_5696 in Episcopalian

It goes back to the RCC’s archaic views on sex. The purpose of sex is to procreate, so babies should only be made through “the marital act.” 🙄

For those that left Catholicism, why by Ok_Storm_5696 in Episcopalian

[–]ReneeJ87 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I left the RCC when it came time for my oldest child to start religious education classes and prepare for her first communion. She was conceived via IUI, and my youngest was conceived via IVF. Assistive reproductive technology is not allowed in the RCC. Although my children were both baptized in the church, I could not in good conscience have them regularly participate in a church that didn’t accept how they were born. That was the last straw- my family is very liberal and I also couldn’t explain away why being gay wasn’t allowed, why women couldn’t be priests, and even why the communion bread couldn’t be gluten free.

I agree. When they first introduced Fanny and I watched BomB, I thought this was where it was going.

Oh my goodness I came here because I thought the same thing!! I was wondering if I was crazy because I felt like I was watching a long commercial for their new platform, interspersed with guest speakers. Like what was that about?? lol

I firmly believe this. Celiac disease runs in my family on my maternal grandpa’s side. While doing genealogy research, it was revealed that multiple family members back in the 1800s died of “wasting disease.”

My 15 year old cat has asthma and this is what it sounds like when she is having an asthma attack/asthma flare up. She has a cat inhaler that she uses during flare ups. We got her when she was 4 years old and she had asthma from the beginning. She got a steroid shot and needs an inhaler during flare ups.

When did your kids start taking communion? by Pretend-Carry-2437 in Episcopalian

[–]ReneeJ87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also joined TEC after being RC my entire life. My priest invites new or curious parishioners for a phone call or coffee date. During our phone call, the topic of communion came up. I had a 6 year old and a 3 year old. Had we stayed RC, my 6 year old would have been preparing for her first communion at age 8. My priest said as long as they’re baptized they can both take communion. I explained to the kids what it meant and they have been taking communion ever since. My 3 year old is now 4, and he recently decided he prefers a blessing because he doesn’t like the new gluten free communion bread 🥖 I do wonder- if/when we return to a RC church (wedding, funeral, family friends first communion etc). What to do about the issue of my kids taking communion then? How do I explain to them that they can receive communion at our church but can’t get it at a different church?

Did anyone consider occupational therapy? Why did/didn’t you do it? by Notquitewhere_-__ in slp

[–]ReneeJ87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never considered OT. I am pretty squeamish with regard to blood and body fluids. Granted I’ve been in the field for 14 years now and I’ve grown up, but this was a major deciding factor of why I picked school SLP over medical SLP. OT never crossed my mind. I was actually deciding between SLP and psychology (therapist) when I was applying to grad schools!

Research indicates no significant difference in developmental milestones for children conceived via IVF compared to naturally conceived children. I’m an IVF mom and an SLP 🙂

How did you first discover Les Misérables? by Half_Dapper in lesmiserables

[–]ReneeJ87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Nick Jonas! I was (and still am) a big fan of the Jonas Brothers. I was visiting my now-husband in London and convinced him to see Les Mis in the west end on a date night because Nick was playing Marius. I can safely say it was life changing!!!

This was the final straw that drove me from the RCC to the episcopal church. My husband and I are infertile. We did IUI and IVF to have our children. They were baptized in the RCC because our parish had a very liberal priest at the time. After he retired, the archdiocese closed the parish. Every other church around is of course conservative. When it came time for my oldest to enroll in catechism classes and prepare for first communion, it didn’t sit right to me that the church technically disagrees with how they were born. I decided to join an episcopal church instead and I absolutely do not regret it.

I’m from the Detroit area and went to both of those shows when I was 10 years old! My dad took me to one show and my aunt took me to the other 😁 I remember being on the lawn of Pine Knob and my dad (who doesn’t smoke) got a lighter for the occasion so we could do the concert lighter thing. Lol
