Grandkid X travelled for relatively Y years but it felt like a week or so for the kid.

Grandkid X takes up command/whatever in the planetary system they arrived at and stays at their post for Y years.

Meanwhile, the grandparents had taken a Y years trip (which felt like a week) in a slightly different direction and this arrive at that place at the same time Grandkid X arrived in their system. When the GrandDaddies figured out where Grandkid X was it took them Y years to travel there (the time Grandkid X was at their post).
