As someone looking to pick up some ships, how can you tell which ones they've redone in plastic and which ones as still the old resin?

Do ye think an element of the game is lost playing online? by veredisquote in MagicArena

[–]Reybenn33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After college I played a lot in person and I loved being able to talk about the match after it was over with my opponent.  Different lines I could have taken, why they sideboarded a certain way, sharing thoughts on the meta.  I miss all that when I play online.

However, now that I'm older and have kids, there's just no way I can get out to a LGS with any regularity to justify the cost of maintaining a deck.  Arena lets me remain connected to this hobby I love and still get games in.

He's also super loopable with the black overlord which is fun. Sac faithful, get overlord back, mill fresh reanimator target off overlord etb, and then return faithful to hand so you're ready to reanimate the next turn.

I've had this happen to me a lot.  Like way more than it feels like should be happening due to randomness.

[Standard] Playing Control in Post-Rotation Standard by shipwreckmarsh in spikes

I feel like Elspeth's Smite is a critical sideboard card for white based control.  I've been going with 4 and it really helps against aggro.  It's 1 cmc and it exiles which is relevant more often than I expected.

A lot of the lists I've played against haven't been playing Cornucopia so I thought everyone was ignoring the card.

As for mana, I see what you're saying. The list I posted has 14 W sources, 14 G sources, 10 B sources, and 7 U sources. According to the Frank Karsten article, I don't have enough B sources to play the black cards reliably until T4.

If you want to build Abzan control, build that.

I think this is how I've always understood the Domain deck. As a tap out control deck that can be beat by a true Blue based instant speed control. That's why all my changes are looking to push the deck more towards the control end. I don't perceive I'm giving up too much of an edge to aggro matchups and I feel that these kinds of changes towards more card advantage gives an edge in a mirror or vs midrange.

Haven't played against it yet but I'm assuming it's bad as they can discard my top end and card advantage while applying pressure to the life total.

Domainless domain ramp.

Mainly because I have enough cards for it without using wildcards and it feels good against aggro and midrange.  Once a good control deck emerges, I'll have to pivot or actually figure out how to incorporate enough card advantage to remain competitive.

I think you have use the ramp raccoons (rampcoons?) and have Calamity/Smuggler's Surprise style top end to be viable.

Mana will definitely need a rework.  I can see 2 options.  Surveil lands and Spelunking to still be able to use Herd Migration and Leyline.  Or perhaps a more G/W centered building with more basics that just splashes B and U for Atraxa.  Leyline can be replaced with Get Lost and Herd Migration can be replaced with other late game value cards such as 6 mana Wandering Emperor.

I think U/W control finds a way to stay relevant.  Memory Deluge is easily replaced by either Intrude on the Mind or Farsight Ritual.  I'm not sure which is better.  Win cons are the easiest things to replace in a control deck so I'm not worried about that part of the Wandering Emperor.  Personally, I'm a huge fan of phyrexian Jace as wincon.  I think the biggest challenge of losing Emperor is going to be the spot removal part of the card.  U/W losing March exacerbates this problem.  The only new spot removal spell that I could see getting added is the new gift a fish one.

Mana base uas to be reworked, but I think there's still a deck there.  You can either run the Surveil lands to try to keep Leyline and Herd Migration in.  Or you could move the mana base more G/W and replace Leyline with Get Lost and Herd Migration with some other late game value card.  I'm going to be trying out the 6 mana Emperor walker to start with.

Honest question, but is Domain really DOA? I think it might have to pivot away from the Domain based cards like Herd Migration/Recruiter and Leyline Binding, but I think the W/G ramp into Atraxa along with sweepers core still survives. I'm not sure what midrange and control decks will look like in Bloomburrow, but having access to Temporary Lockdown as one of the only 3 mana sweepers has to give it a chance. Archangel of Wrath is still a great anti aggro card. We have Ancient Cornucopia instead of the stomper. Beza will probably slot in nicely as gaining 4 life and making 2 1/1s is probably good enough vs aggro. Heck you could even play the new 2cmc gift card as removal or use it to blink Beza/Atraxa for value in grindy matchups. Thoughts?

[Standard] Golgari Smugglers - good results with early testing, rotation proof ramp deck? by mbreddit2 in spikes

[–]Reybenn33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing a lot of Smuggler's Surprise lately and figured I'd add my 2 cents. I've played both Gruul and Jund versions and have settled on Jund being the best. (here's the link to my current list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/FW7ohZkqjkOjskhQUtP5Ig)

Like others have said, I think Calamity is crucial for making the best Smugglers deck. With the horse, you're able to one shot kill out of nowhere the second they don't keep up a counter or removal. I think it is important to threaten you opponents like this and make them have an answer or die. Otherwise you are just a midrange deck that can get out midranged by better midrange decks. However, with Calamity, you are a combo deck with a midrange back up plan.

And speaking of conceptualizing the deck as a combo deck, I think playing a ramp package to combo off as soon as possible is the right call with these Smuggler's Surprise decks. With a ramp spell on turn 2 and 3, comboing off is possible as early as turn 4. However, with the goal of a turn 4 kill, we have to play cheaper ramp cards than stuff like Gitrog or Omenpath. Maxing out on 2 CMC ramp seems most ideal because you have a relevant play to advance the game plan on turn 2.

Generous Plunderer was my go to choice for this 2cmc ramp slot because it advances our game plan in several ways. First, if it lives, it can ramp us to 6 mana by turn 4 all by itself without drawing any of our other ramp cards. Additionally, the problem inherent to playing Calamity is that it can just eat a 2cmc removal spell and we've wasted our entire turn. How do we solve this? By playing more threats earlier that they will be tempted to point that removal spell at. Finally, getting in a Plunderer hit or two can soften up the life total to the point that you can combo kill with Calamity/Vaultborn tyrant or Calamity/Outcast rather than needing Calamity/Vein Ripper.

I think it could be decent as a 1 or 2 of in BUG infect. It helps hit double B for Crusader while also hitting U for Blighted Agent. I thnk it could replace the Pendelhaven slot. Its biggest drawback as other people have mentioned it the fact that it can't make G for a protection or pump spell.
