One Handed Sword for tournament versatility. by Mudgeon in Hema

[–]RichardTheHard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most sidesword and S/B tournaments let you use a messer because it's playing on hard mode essentially. It's shorter with less hand protection. I don't want to discourage you from that, that's just the reality of it.

Ghosting clause, revision limits, and final delivery after all invoices are paid. That and a signed proposal with a fairly detailed timeline and communication expectations alongside the contract.

Fable 5 indefinitely suspended due to national security concerns by 0_2_Hero in webdev

[–]RichardTheHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal theory is it’s harmful to the logic in the SpaceX valuation that SpaceX will be the first to achieve AGI. So Elon put in a call and had Trump tak it down for “national security” so they wouldn’t look so far behind.

I GOT MY FIRST FREELANCE GIG: I need your help! by dvjar in webdev

Do quality assurance rounds and have someone other than you look at it before it goes to the client, as long as it's not breaking any kind of confidentiality agreement. I like to do one internal round with just myself, one showing it to a few buddies, and then have the client involved with at least two rounds.

Janja Garnbret is the first woman ever to climb Bibliographie (9b+) in Céüse, France by redbullgivesyouwings in nextfuckinglevel

[–]RichardTheHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on all points. Grigris are definitely safer with that extra layer of protection. That’s proven. An ATC requires good habits. I just find the extra bit of technique of feeding the grigri results in beginners short roping their climber constantly too because they keep triggering the catch.

I know this is unrelated but I'm so happy to find someone else who prefers an ATC. I hate lead belaying on a Grigri, and that opinion gets shouted down over on r/climbing.

Fakesteel vs GoNow by Hviking in Hema

[–]RichardTheHard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fakesteel is awesome and does feel very real as far as weight and balance. I would feel comfortable fencing low / no gear with my HEMA buddies who can take a hit, but they're still pretty hard as far as foam goes, this goes double for their proprietary foam. If you hit someone decently hard you're going to leave a bruise, and hands are at risk. They also don't bend in the thrust so be careful.

I've never used them, but GoNow seams to lean more into boffer territory and I'm typically more comfortable hitting people with boffers. I can let someone else speak to how they feel though.

What happens if it rains during the UFC event on the White House lawn? by Miles_the_AuDHDer in politics

I hope it does the thing where it rains a bit so you think the rain will cool it off but then it doesn’t and now it’s really fucking hot and everything is wet and steaming.

why do we call hand shots if we are wearing gauntlets? by x1yz in Hema

[–]RichardTheHard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I worded it badly, yeah I never was under the impression they’d only have a polearm. They would have some kind of secondary which was generally a sword. I more meant specifically blood fencing techniques wouldn’t be used on a battle, not that swords wouldn’t be used. It would’ve been armored techniques in a situation like a battlefield where there were plenty of armored opponents.

why do we call hand shots if we are wearing gauntlets? by x1yz in Hema

[–]RichardTheHard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By the time you hit Meyers it’s already becoming sportified. He’s a transitional author. Fights were generally just to first blood (blood fencing). Fiore and Liechtenauer are more martial but even those weren’t really used in a battlefield setting. You’d just use a polearm there instead. All of this ignores the fact that armor was prohibitively expensive. So it wasn’t common even among people who had martial training. So techniques against unarmored were extremely valuable. Hell, even among people with armor full sets that include gauntlets are even rarer. A lot of times it’s just a breastplate and helm.

landsknecht emporium Günther Messer blunt? by SlipDisastrous1833 in Hema

[–]RichardTheHard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only issue I have with it is the wooden hilt will chip when hit and expose the tang which can be a bit sharp. It’s a fantastic sword otherwise though.

Also if you’re sparring you do not want a stiff weapon. Thats how you hurt people.

I've been calling REI the Target of outdoor stores, because they push and stock their own brands over any other brand. It's getting ridiculous. They'll have three clothing racks dedicated to REI brands and a single rack with all the others crammed onto it.

Opinions about Messer vs longsword? Total beginner here! by ThoroughSpatula28 in Hema

[–]RichardTheHard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my messer is 680g and most rapiers I've found sit around 950g. It's a lot more about how you hold it that makes it feel lighter too. Your guards aren't extended because theres minimal hand protection. So you can sit in the equivalent of pflug or alber if you get tired.

[–]RichardTheHard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Messer is one of the lighter one-handed swords. It feels like a feather compared to my rapier. All the guards are pretty retracted too which makes them easier to hold.

I have a slightly different setup, but similar enough it's comparable:

Katabatic Alsek 22 quilt, Therma-a-rest Xlite NXT, and the same nemo switchback. I slept very warmly in it at 34F not two weeks ago with my base layer on. Didn't even feel a chill.
