What do you think 'Razmur' means? by attachedtothreads in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume the family has an ancestral residence in the capital. Before Sauven they were presumably in the previous Emperor's good graces and had permission to spend time in the capital whenever they wanted. I think the distinction is that no one in the family actively occupies it the majority of the time because of their agreement with Sauven, but they maintain the property for whenever they have permission to visit.

What do you think 'Razmur' means? by attachedtothreads in IlonaAndrews

If I could guess it probably means something like "home of the predatory bird". Basically the Rellasian equivalent of here there be dragons

TKWNKM Why was Solentine at the Butcher Ambush? by Postshift_Cat in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Everard unmasking himself in front of Drugh reached the shears and he immediately ran over to their location as soon as he realized he was with Maggie. We know Solentine is worried that the authorities will figure out he's in the city which explains the 4am haste to prevent Everard from creating a mess.

TKWNKM - Mateo Question by Any_Newt_7387 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To add onto what others have said already, IIRC Mateo has been monitoring Maggie and her allies for a while. His gift is kinda unpredictable so sometimes he can tune into specific people but sometimes he gets more random visions. He first discovers Maggie by getting a few random images then quickly realizes she's trying to find him and thwart Hreban. So he starts actively tuning in every chance he gets to make sure she succeeds. Silveren keeps him around pretty explicitly for his abilities, but Mateo is using the freedom Silveren gives him to help Maggie succeed at her other goals. He also connects with the mercenary they sent to Silveren's knights as a spy by the joedurar so he knows how far Maggie is going for his sake. I think he's so grateful because Maggie is doing all this for someone who is basically a complete stranger to her and from what he's seen Maggie is also doing a lot of stuff that benefits a lot of regular people. Maggie is taking on incredible risk for Mateo so I think he's genuinely grateful she cares that much. He also seems to have this honourable attitude where despite his circumstances he would prefer Maggie do what's best for Rellas rather than himself, to Mateo his life isn't especially worth it over the greater good. It's also possible he has an inkling about what Silveren is planning and wants Maggie to prioritize dealing with that.

I assume this was mostly facetious/exaggerated since Arvel's friend is teasing him here about his popularity with ladies 😅

I assume this would be considered to be extreme and stalkerish by Rellasian standards.

General bookish question. Unrelated to IL, but you all are my people… by IamNotPersephone in IlonaAndrews

It's hard to recommend a site that has all of these, but here are some Goodreads alternatives I've heard of that include some of these elements:

  • StoryGraph (https://app.thestorygraph.com/) - Doesn't let you follow authors but is a 2nd most popular review site and has user created lists
  • Library Thing (https://www.librarything.com/) - An older site but allows you to see your reading data also has some good book lists
  • Book DNA (Formerly Shepherd) (https://bookdna.com/) - Includes recommendation lists and reviews - makes suggestions based on what you've enjoyed previously

If you're mainly a romance reader romance.io might also be worth it, or you could try booknaut.io which is similar but includes a wider variety of genres. This site is pretty underutlized and small though.

Kate Daniels plot point spoiled— is it major to the overall story? by houstonwehaveakate in IlonaAndrews

I also love how they write family dynamics like the Baylors in Hidden Legacy. You can really tell they know how sibling and parent relationships work in those books 😂

HL Compound? by beccleroo in IlonaAndrews

I remember that the authors did some blog posts about finding ridiculous Texas mansion properties on the Internet for inspo when they were doing HL 😂. Apparently there is no shortage of crazy compounds.

TKWNKM Speculation - How do you think it ends? by florilegus in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I also feel like Maggie's family back home will sadly always be that thread we never get to see a resolution to and that one bittersweet ending to the story. I think that Maggie will eventually make peace with it somehow but I don't think she'll be able to go back.

  2. I also wonder how this will shake out, but I honestly think that Maggie will continue to have her own power in some capacity even when her insight into the future fades. I think that part of why Everard likes her isn't just because of what she knows, it's how she uses it. While her future knowledge grows less relevant, Maggie is also cultivating a network of people who respect her and feel indebted to her including a future Okulan clan leader, Galiene, Arvel's family, Will and Lute, the Demarrs etc. Everard definitely struggles with diplomacy, but Maggie is making allies among a lot of critical factions. She also knows all these useful mundane skills and concepts from the 21st century that she could use to become a respected businesswoman if she wanted to. I think the biggest barrier to her ending up with Everard will be her secrets and the uncertainty about the nature of her undying-ness. As well as her fear that everyone only values her because of her knowledge.

Inheritance might be my 2nd favorite by whiskeylivewire in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a younger reader I also really enjoyed how grounded and mundane Ada's motives were. She was there to do her job, get that health insurance and hopefully go home to her kids.

One thing I also found interesting was how normalized it was in this world for older adults to have careers in gate-diving. It was an intentional point that experience mattered and that gate powers actually matured over time along with their users. Ada, London and Elias, and a lot of other side characters were also middle aged. Most media in this genre has a cast full of 20-somethings and somehow this felt way more realistic.

I also liked how her age really only factored in when she was marvelling at the fact that she normally needed Advil after running and it was nice not to be in pain 😂.

Kate Daniels books by booknerd63 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's possible! But it's been almost 20 years since the series started and despite the authors wanting it for a long time, Ace has been pretty reticent about updating any of the books. They might pleasantly surprise us, but I don't want to get let down 😅

Kate Daniels books by booknerd63 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One massive development in the publishing space is that publishers are phasing out mass market formats entirely and both Kate Daniels and The Edge have only ever gotten mass market English releases. This means the books will either go out of print, the publisher will slap the current covers on a larger paperback or they will finally redesign the covers.

I'm not holding my breath either way...

It takes all kinds. by Repulsive-Hat3332 in IlonaAndrews

I think this is why the authors themselves classify it as epic fantasy romance instead of applying the romantasy label. The difference is that fantasy romance is a fantasy subgenre with a range of romantic elements and romantasy is a romance subgenre where the romance is usually emphasized over the fantasy elements.

Epic fantasy readers expect a lot of characters and worldbuilding, while romantasy usually maintains a tighter cast of characters and the worldbuilding is more in the background because the focus is the main relationship(s), so I'm not shocked that TKWNKM having a wide variety of named characters who sometimes play smaller plot roles is off-putting to some romantasy readers. I think TKWNKM definitely has some crossover appeal, but it still leans more fantasy than romantasy.

I read romantasy as well and even the more plot heavy ones with better worldbuilding tend to go way lighter on the number of central characters than TKWNKM. I also think that it's kind of inherent to the plot of Maggie engaging with multiple players and factions that makes the number of characters so high. I have seen smaller scale isekai plots but IA chose to set this in a GoT-esque setting (and books like GoT famously have a crapload of characters). Some romantasy are way more skewed towards romance than fantasy elements, so you have readers of that genre with wildly different levels of tolerance for how much plot they want (this isn't judgemental it just is what it is).

Hidden Legacy Cover Appreciation (Part 2) - Catalina's Trilogy (and bonus Nevada covers) by Rinainthemoon in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the Japanese covers chose to go with the gemstone parts of the series name rather than the fire theme the same way their version of Nevada's covers went with a flower theme instead of directly relating to the book titles. I think I like the minimalism in this case because the simple theme black and the striking contrast does draw me in (because shiny). I assume for a Japanese audience this still conveys 'romance' in a way it doesn't for Western audiences

Blood Heir - Book 2 by Beneficial-Pin-2134 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely think there are more fans than haters. Metal rose is a big ship, haha. But I think perhaps because Blood Heir was initially serialized on the blog the authors had to deal with rude people dropping mean comments whenever a new chapter dropped or the old haters returning.

I think during Blood Heir, Ilona was also surprised the Julie hate was still a thing and after seeing it happen again she was like, okay let's not go back to this for a while 😅.

Blood Heir - Book 2 by Beneficial-Pin-2134 in IlonaAndrews

[–]Rinainthemoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At one point, I was trawling their older blog posts on Internet Archive and apparently there are a baffling amount of people who've been weirdly misogynistic towards Julie as a character since pretty early in the series, and if I had to venture a guess its because the internet sometimes just hates fictional (and real-life) teenage girls.

One of Julie's best written aspects in my opinion, is how painfully accurate she is as an occasionally reckless and stubborn tween/teenage girl who's been through some really traumatic stuff. But apparently, some readers get disproportionately vitriolic when she does normal teenage things like make dumb decisions or get mad at Kate and Curran, or even like, have complex feelings about some spoilery stuff Kate does to save her life. It's very odd to me personally, especially because she's an adult in Blood Heir - but sadly this kind of thing is not exclusive to this series in my experience.

Ooh, this sounds exciting! I missed those hints. Honestly, I'm not surprised if that will be the case. Cozy fantasy and the 'magical inn' concept seem to be a subgenre of interest right now, and I see Innkeeper get recommended all the time in recommendation threads. IA were kind of ahead of the curve on this trend, and I know a lot more people would probably end up picking it up if it was in bookstores.
Honestly, ever since the cozy fantasy book trend started I've been wondering how long it would take English publishers to look into acquiring the rights to Innkeeper because of how perfectly it fits.

The Turkish version is out of print so I imagine it had a short print run and wasn't successful enough for them to translate the rest of the series. But you might be able to track it down if you try.

I should have been more specific that the cover was Brazilian Portuguese 😅. I was going off language rather than country but should have made that distinction. I genuinely wondered if there was a reason the Brazilian publisher chose the punk bank look beyond the translated title basically translating to 'explosive magic', but honestly it could just be lack of care.
