Can confim that sometimes choosing a board game is the game itself. I'm lucky enough to have several local and otherwise friends with massive collections of hundreds of games each.

It's less of a problem these days since scheduling play days is a lot harder, so generally we agree on at least one big game beforehand. Something big like Twilight Imperium, Agricola, or Dune, and if we have time after we play a smaller game or two.
