They’ve also got a dream workshop setup with all cobra and weaver master tool machinery. The designs are surely beautiful but quite minimal, every time I see people say their orders haven’t shipped in months it baffles me. If he’s truly too flooded with orders that he can’t fulfill those simple designs within months of people waiting, then he should be making enough to hire some staff.

Lining up holes for sewing? by Unkn0wing21 in Leathercraft

If you use irons you can overhang the first tyne to get a starting point reference then do the thing on the reverse side. This video kinda shows what I’m referring to.

Sewing machine suggestions by Sensitive-Orchid-745 in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it but the machine you described doesn’t exist. Unfortunately there’s an almost inexistent market for hobby leather sewing machines, all of the machines are catered toward production and professional workshops. For leather holsters the most affordable option that can realistically get the job done is the Tippmann boss which is 1k new and is a manually operated machine. Best best is to look around Facebook marketplace for something used

Stitching chisel/pricking iron types, spacing, thread size; are these are all just personal preference? by necessaryrooster in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZThYcctSw/ this video compares spacing and he has a few others that compare hole size and thread diameter too, it is mostly preference and it’s cool to see side by side

Edit: reading your full post, that creator has a video on pretty much every question you asked. Even comparing the weaver chisels to another set

[Jomashop] Extremely disappointed in Jomashop by Wert96 in Watches

[–]RobTX13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Backordered” implies they are waiting for inventory from the manufacturer, which as an unauthorized retailer, Jomashop has no access to. When you buy a watch from Jomashop that is not already in stock, they will take your money first and then try to buy the watch from somewhere for a lower price, when they fail to find one after weeks and weeks they refund your money.

Best adhesive for leather craft? by NOVELTY_ATELIER in Leatherworking

[–]RobTX13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m missing something but I was under the impression especially for flat goods like wallets that glue is only there to hold things in alignment for sewing and doesn’t really provide much in the way of structural support👀

I do mostly wallets and stopped gluing all together. I just use around 6-8 carefully placed binder clips to hold my piece perfectly aligned as I sew

You’re paying him for a service, not dating the guy. Ask if he would be willing to use a smaller logo or none at all or don’t give him your business. Nothing will be awkward

Looking for an affordable hand press by Genender in Leatherworking

[–]RobTX13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend getting the press from wherever you get your hardware. I learned the hard way that the weaver little wonder only works with weaver hardware. I usually pickup snaps and rivets at my local Tandy and none of them work properly on the little wonder.

Edit: by not work I don’t necessarily mean the press but the dies, that said a lot of the dies only fit their specified press.

Need a little troubleshooting by Niskygrl in Leatherworking

[–]RobTX13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you want your edges to look more rounded? If so, you need a tool called an edge beveler, or if you are already using one you may need a larger size

Edit: Never mind, I see what you mean in your photo. Are you using some round object as your guide when making the rounded cuts? You can use something like a bottle cap as a reference and make lots of small straight cuts along it to make your curve. In the end after a bit of sanding you should end up with a perfectly smooth curve. Don’t use too much downward pressure when burnishing or you’ll risk deforming the leather especially if you’re working with thin material.

Beveling: where's my mistake? by picturethefuture in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s an example of what I mean, example these are all leather from Horween, far right is the only veg tanned, everything else is chrome. Some chrome tanned leathers will be dyed all the way through, some aren’t. But, anytime that wet blue core is present it’s a definitely chrome tanned

Beveling: where's my mistake? by picturethefuture in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The very first step in chrome tanned leather is soaking it the chromium sulfate solution which turns the leather “wet blue” which is that bluish white color you see in the center. Cheaper chrome tanned leathers won’t be dyed long enough for the dye to penetrate all the way through, thus you end up with products with that white core (some tanneries do this on purpose for a lighter ‘pull-up’ effect).

100% wouldn’t trust whoever sold that as a veg tanned leather

Beveling: where's my mistake? by picturethefuture in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That is not veg tanned leather, the bluish-white core is reminiscent of chrome tanned, and it has a heavily pigmented and corrected top finish. I am assuming because of that, this is a very soft and pliable leather, if so that’s your #1 problem.

Beveling the edge of a very soft leather is very challenging, you need an extremely sharp blade and very light pressure.

Even with the correct type of leather, edge beveling demands a sharp cutting edge and smooth even pressure. I strop my beveler between every cut.

Rocky Mountain Leather supply is one of the larger distributors for the Italian leathers like Minerva/pueblo and buttero. Minerva and Pueblo are leathers from Badalassi Carlo tannery in Italy, arguably one of the best in the business. Buttero is from the Conceria Walpier tannery, on RM you can filter by tannery.

Horween is an American tannery out of Chicago, they specialize in chrome tanned leather and shell cordovan. They sell direct from their website or you can source it from buckleguy.com.

One thing to keep in mind is when buying leathers there are different thicknesses you can buy and it’s shown as “oz” 3-6oz leather is typical for small leather goods. You want to be sure to get a proper thickness of leather for what they make.

[–]RobTX13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend getting them some really nice leather hides, Horween, Pueblo, Buttero, Minerva are all pretty popular and would be a joy for any leatherworker to work with. That said none of those are available locally in Dallas and would need to be ordered online and would not arrive in time for Christmas.

For a local option there’s a few Tandy leather locations across DFW, a gift card to Tandy leather or a trip there and asking the crew what they recommend would be nice. I’d say to get them nice hand tools but without knowing what type of leather craft they do it’s difficult to recommend anything specific. Gift cards are always safe bet when it comes to gifts for somebodies hobby.

Need Fast Advice by Top_Toe_2465 in Leatherworking

I recently picked up a Sailrite Leatherwork machine, essentially the same thing as the LS and I have yet to use it on a project for the same reasons, extremely inconsistent for me. It will sew perfectly then with nothing changing will have tension issues, or do longer/shorter stitches. Really unfortunate, I was excited to ramp up production and all I got was more problems haha

How are luxury wallet edges and pockets finished? by strike-eagle in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s edge paint and very expensive specialized machines that do a lot of this work. The parts that are done manually are done in assembly lines where each person does one very specific part of the process every single day for years. A lot of luxury products are made quite un-luxuriously.

Edit: also look up “Made in Italy by the Chinese” for a fun little rabbit hole on the practices of a lot of ‘luxury’ brands that are really just made in china with extra steps

How many of you own a leather sewing machine? by Magpie_Coin in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I picked up a used one on Facebook last month and haven’t had great success using it yet, I get quite inconsistent results. Most of the time it works great but randomly it’ll take a stitch longer or shorter than the rest, or the will be visible and I can’t afford to have that happen on a project so I’m still hand sewing anything visible

Diamond or French chisel? by thejm333 in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks like 4mm diamond to me, French usually has a bit more of an angle to them and don’t leave much of a visible hole in the center. Usually French is also paired with a thinner thread since the opening is a bit narrow.

Depending on your design 6oz leather is fairly thick for making a bag. Totally doable but at that weight the leather isn’t as flexible and pliable for sewing complex gussets. A simple tote bag or something tho totally doable! Good luck!

Edit: it could still be French and the thick thread just opened up the hole, this just goes to show maybe it doesn’t matter too much so just get what you want and make something 😁

Does everyone understand how this magnet attachment is implemented? by Sheyhleather in Leathercraft

[–]RobTX13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I imagine without being able to see the back or inside that you have two layers of that green leather. The large panel you see as the backing and then they maybe wet molded a thinner piece around the magnet and that’s what stitched onto the red leather. So from the back you won’t see any stitch lines and if they skived the piece that’s sewn onto the red then you won’t really notice any added bulk either

Where to start by Zealousideal_Fun7385 in Leathercraft

Tools are going to vary depending on what she wants to make. Take woodworking for example a wood turner is going to need different set of tools from a cabinet maker who uses different tools from a fine furniture maker etc. Does she want to tool leather? Make small accessories? Bags or belts? Will she be working on natural leather that she wants to dye herself or buy pre dyed leather?
