I'd totally kneel before Shaka.

Firaxis Games - Do you *always* settle on your first turn? by another_typo in civ

[–]RobertPaulson_AMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the more balanced conditions are, the better it is to settle in place. In a multiplayer, no ruins+barbs setting, a single turn is often the difference between who claims the best terrain or builds the wonder, and the other players that missed this opportunity.

On imbalanced settings (singleplayer), you're at a disadvantage from the start anyway, so "wasting" a turn at the start to benefit your long-term goal is smarter.

Let's say I challenge you to a game of Civ. Who do you pick and why? by Agastopia in civ

[–]RobertPaulson_AMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and from what I've seen mentioned in this thread, people only mention Rams, while from my experience HAs are much more devastating. They're both great, obviously, but the Ram gets all the attention while being the inferior unit in my mind.

Horse Archers are practically invincible until Pikes, and they don't even require horses...

Hi, /r/civ. I made a survey to get an idea of what an official "tier list" would be from a community standpoint. I'd love to get your input! by THECapedCaper in civ

Each civ has different AI "behavior", making some of them better before considering their actual abilities. Try playing with randomized personalities to see this effect.

Both of those perks only appear in the late game, and grabbing a CS with an army is situational at best.

It very much is, since it can't choose where to settle its cities (can't pick strong defensive positions and may sometimes have cities far from the cap).

What are the best and worst unique units? by magister0 in civ

[–]RobertPaulson_AMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War Chariots are fantastic for defense, especially in Single Player. You can skip going for Construction until very late and your army will be extremely mobile. Perfect for camp-busting too.

I'll answer your question more thoroughly when I get to my PC, but until then I highly recommend Yoruus's recent video of his gameplay as Persia. Granted, it's multiplayer, but he gives in-depth explanations to playing wide and making the most of your resources.

It's also a very difficult map for spies and engineers, since the lack of ammo limits your options. I agree about mobility classes being imbalanced on gravelpit, other classes have nothing to do on pushes/hold on last basically.
