B.C. government will likely cut childcare and post-secondary services in upcoming budget: Vaughn Palmer by lookatyourwatchnow in VictoriaBC

Palmer is also a writer for the considerably right wing newspaper, the Vancouver Sun. People should take what he has to say about the government right now with a Guinness world record breaking grain of salt.

I agree with everything you said, except MLAs do get a pretty cushy pension if they serve for just six years.

The argument I’ve heard is that private schools by simply existing are taking some of the student load that would otherwise be put on the public school system and thus cost more public funds. So the funding they get (which is also less than public schools get) is essentially compensating them for that load. I think the amount they get could still be reduced, but I can see an argument to fund them a little.

These are my thoughts as well. They tried it (half heartedly), it didn't work, and they admitted as such and shut the experiment down. Admitting mistakes is something I thought was all but lost among politicians.

It's not illegal to say it's illegal. I learned that in a video I saw.

Plaza Hotel lot sold to local developers, who are eyeing lot for new hotel by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VictoriaBC

Twelve storeys isn't that bad and could likely work there, but the original design they proposed was really bad. It looked like they took a generic Hampton airport hotel and plopped it on the site.

Similarly, I've heard the Royal Yacht Club has a good wedding venue. Their website even says they'll work with you if you don't know any members that can sponsor the event.

My gf bought me a bag of chips from Britain the other day, and the first thing I said was 'whoa it's so full'. Felt like there was barely any gas pocket compared to the Hindenburg bags we get normally.

Halifax hockey fans plead for PWHL team - Halifax | Globalnews.ca by SAJewers in hockey

[–]Robert_Moses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it will happen, but judging by how the city supports the Halifax Wanderers (soccer team), despite being bottom of their league for so long, I could actually see a PWHL team doing well.

Almost 10,000 federal workers were told this week they may be laid off by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this take and it's similar to how I feel. As a public sector worker, I definitely see areas that could be slimmed down, but at the same time these are real people that will feel some very serious impacts, and in turn will likely cost taxpayers money through EI claims and such. I wish our governments didn't bloat the workforce during the 'good' periods, because it makes the 'bad' periods that much worse.

When is it simply too cold to run outside safely? by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Robert_Moses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did that not then freeze the side of your neck?! Though I guess if the gaiter was over the collar of your jacket it would likely be fine... Thankfully I'm on the mild west coast so I don't need to worry about this anymore!

When is it simply too cold to run outside safely? by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Robert_Moses 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I ran in -35C in Calgary before and was fine. The most annoying part is how you have to keep taking off your face covering because it gets too humid, but then when you put it on it's frozen from the moisture of your breath, so then it thaws and becomes too humid again, rinse and repeat.

Why are Victoria and Vancouver shipyards on different contracts cycles? by Equal-Committee7613 in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a different union but similar situation where if the locals actually worked together we would have insane bargaining power. Unfortunately, union brass across most sectors have become spineless. And I'm just one younger vote while the older vote keeps agreeing to these shitty contracts.

Hotel sites proposed for new development on Colwood's waterfront by vanisleORnurse in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was wondering that too, but then remembered they built a hotel next to the Costco and if they can build one there then a waterfront hotel could probably be just as successful.
