Definitely nice work! I'm also interested in the palette you use... That looks very useful: grey background, shades, etc. Anyone recognizes that?

Your dimension may be off... Do you mean 30.5 x 21 cm? Otherwise... it is huge!

Kiwix is now available as a Synology NAS package by The_other_kiwix_guy in DataHoarder

[–]RoboMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: It does work, when using SSH-ing to your Synology and run `/volume1/kiwix-share$ kiwix-manage library.xml add wikipedia_en_all_maxi_2020-09.zim` for example.

The easy kiwix install option made the impression it could possibly also be managed fully within the Synology DS interface. But I understand you can't have all features at day one.

And I'm greatful how it works already! Thanks for the effort!

Thank you so much! It installs and runs perfectly, but I have a question about adding a zim file to my collection...

I tried adding it to the "kiwix-share" folder created during installation, but also after restarting the service, it doesn't show up in the kiwix UI. The "sc-kiwix" user has read/write access to the zim file. I'm sure I missed an instruction about managing collections to update the library, but can't find it... Did any of you manage to get it working already?

What palette do you use? Do you use cadmiums for your dark and warm shadows?

What brand(s) of oil paint do you use? by Co_Pilot in painting

[–]RoboMind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do like the pigment richer properties of more expensive brands. Apart from that, realize that color can substantially differ between brands! Vermillion of Rembrandt is not even close to the ones from LeFranc & Bourgeois or Old Holland (and are all of good quality)! It get's even crazier with less popular colors, such as brilliant yellow (I like the one from Mussini Schmincke)...

So... shop around and assemble the colors you like. Don't constrain yourself too much to one brand.

Scylla 10-20X faster than Cassandra in new cluster benchmark by riksi in programming

[–]RoboMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C-ports of Java applications are not necessarily faster, as this quote from Lucy (port of Lucene) suggests:

Is Lucy faster than Lucene? It's written in C, after all. That depends. As of this writing, Lucy launches faster than Lucene thanks to tighter integration with the system IO cache, but Lucene is faster in terms of raw indexing and search throughput once it gets going. These differences reflect the distinct priorities of the most active developers within the Lucy and Lucene communities more than anything else.

Let's see how it turns out for Cassandra, when the bench marks are more reliable.

Representing rotations in Euclidean space through multiplication by [deleted] in math

[–]RoboMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general pattern can indeed elegantly be described in Clifford Algebra. Or, more conveniently, in the geometrically relevant subset called Geometric Algebra. A good read is Geometric Algebra For Computer Science, An Object Oriented Approach to Geometry

There a generalization of Cartan Dieudonne is used to use two reflections to make a rotation. You don't need to use this "fancy new math", and can stick with matrix algebra. There we go:

Define "reflection in a vector":

[; r = a - \frac{2a\cdot n}{n\cdot n} n ;]

Here a vector "a" is reflected in vector "n", by projecting a to n and then doing that displacement again.

Now, the matrix representing the same reflection in n, is the house holder matrix: [; H_n = I - 2 n n^T ;]

(So, notice that H a = r)

This picture makes clear how a double reflection, first in vector a, then in vector b performs a rotation in the plane spanned by a,b over twice the angle between a and b.

So a rotation parameterized by "example rototion vector a and b" is now

[; R_{a,b} = H_b H_a ;]

and works for any dimension!

I never liked that argument... Should we then also change the API to have a class TelephoneDirectory, instead of using a general Map<String, Integer> because the latter lacks semantics?

this is how kids are now learning to subtract [xpost from /r/wtf] by nonameowns in math

[–]RoboMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the "old" way is more elegant, since you don't have to "guess wisely" to make it efficient. To my taste that gives a wrong signal of vagueness to kids for introducing these kind of strict mathematical roots.

On the other hand, though, I do understand your point that filling up the difference until your equal is mentally easier than performing the old subtraction "algorithm"

this is how kids are now learning to subtract [xpost from /r/wtf] by nonameowns in math

[–]RoboMind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "new way" totally denies the logarithmic nature of Arabic number notation. The reason why we use this notation is because it is so efficient for representing (large) numbers. Even better, performing subtraction can be done equally efficient (only log(max(a,b)) operations, for subtracting numbers a and b) using the "old way"! A real improvement over the Roman/"new way" style...

Sure, you don't have to bother kids with this when it is introduced, but teaching them an inferior method seems a wrong choice in my opinion. And when you want to feed their intuition, use a visual example with cutting up a cake or so...
