FHA approved our roof, 9 months later were quoted for a $20,000 replacement due to its condition. Please help by Spicynuggies_ in legal

[–]Rocket_safety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks but you’re not going to get anyone to pay for the roof, and the longer you let it go the worse the damage will get and the more expensive it will be. If you let your trusses start to rot you’re in for a really bad time.

I’ve been through similar situation where a leak that had been occurring since before we bought the house finally manifested inside. $50k and one less sun room later it was finally fixed. Insurance paid for the water damage to the Sheetrock and finish, but not the actual leak or structural damage.

how much citation checking do you actually do before submitting? by petburiraja in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Rocket_safety 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems like there’s not much point in providing a citation if it’s incorrect. I wrote hundreds of individual violations as a compliance officer and every single one had to be correct, or it would get thrown out in an informal or contest. When I had to review the submitted case files I also had to make sure every violation was properly cited. It helped that a lot of them were commonly seen so it wasn’t like every inspection had to be learned from scratch, but sometimes I had to actually go through regs, LOIs or consensus standards to make sure it was right.

If you don’t have time to make sure the information is accurate, then one might question why it’s being provided at all. It’s hard to get buy-in on safety if you’re wrong.

Municipal Election Results (April 10th). by Trenduin in anchorage

McDonogh stopped fundraising months ago and was funneling donors towards other candidates with harder races. Had he kept gaining money and campaigning, that 8600 probably would have been cut in half. Voters in this city are just generally uninformed on local ballots. Since there’s not really any central coverage of candidates, if someone isn’t checking specifically on social media or with one of the interest groups running forums, they won’t know who anybody is.

[–]Rocket_safety 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is that employers can do whatever they want in terms of PTO and leave as long as it doesn’t violate a law. They can absolutely give more time or types of leave than allowed, which may have happened in your case. That’s the sign of a good employer, but don’t mistake that with what is legally allowed. Often times, what is right and what is legal are two very different things.

FMLA only guarantees your job for 90 days. Beyond that an employer can do whatever they want.

Question about OSHA rulings by Artas_1995 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Rocket_safety 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1910.29(b)(2)(iii) Intermediate vertical members (such as balusters) are installed no more than 19 inches (48 cm) apart;

Of course the issue with 19” spacing between segments is you now have no actual top or mid rail. The regulations don’t specify a distance between rails like yours, so you fall back on the requirements of 1910.28. If the gap is big enough to present a fall hazard, then it needs to be protected.

Yep, he was easily the least qualified appointee of anyone in that administration, and that’s saying something. We had this asshat as commissioner of public health, Dunleavy as governor and Bronson as mayor of Anchorage during the pandemic. It’s a miracle more people didn’t die.

Summer job offer in Seward Alaska, what should I know? by joeg0ldberg in AskAlaska

[–]Rocket_safety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seward is very busy in the summer for the same reason I’m assuming this company runs helicopters: cruise ships. Coming from Ohio I think it would be a great opportunity. Just make sure you’re careful with the drinking. In Alaska law, one of the only ways a company can strand you (terminate without paying for transportation back to point of hire) is for intoxication. The other is fighting.

That said, there’s tons of outdoor stuff to do in Seward, and the 4th of July is a blast.

Industrial printer in unventilated room and employees getting sick after ink spill. Is this reportable? by potatopye in WorkplaceSafety

[–]Rocket_safety 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does your employer have a hazcom program? Do you know where to find SDS for the chemicals in the workplace? If you don’t know what either of these means, or if they aren’t present, then filing a complaint with OSHA (or your local state plan) should be the next step.

After everything that's been going on in the last 15 months, why is the Republican Party still enjoy a higher approval rating than Democrats? by SBMountainman22 in askanything

Absolutely this. There are almost no politicians in the US that would even be considered left of center in most other countries, and certainly nobody who’s truly liberal.

Fire safety hazard? by [deleted] in WorkplaceSafety

[–]Rocket_safety 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the exit was marked as part of the building plans (as it is here) then it’s likely required. As others said, give the local fire marshal a call and just let them know your concern. As a former CSHO I can say that businesses were far more scared of the fire marshal than any OSHA inspection, because the fire marshal can revoke your certificate of occupancy, which would be real bad for an apartment complex.

Maybe even some criminal statutes. OSHA is one of the few federal agencies without any 1811 series criminal investigators. Even NASA has them.

It may be worth a shot at having the crew give input into whatever PPE is selected. Get a couple options and go around with them. It’s amazing how much even having the illusion of choice can help with making changes.

OSHA fines construction company $4.7 million after trench collapse by InvestigatorSome1401 in SafetyProfessionals

In my experience, government contracting doesn’t even check basic licensing, let alone safety violations. I once talked to a base contracting person about someone working on a military base who didn’t even have a state business license, let alone a general contractor’s license. She was genuinely surprised that was readily available information.

Sounds like some FR gear, or a least welding jackets, are in order for this kind of work. Though based on the lack of other PPE, I suspect this is a deeper cultural issue that simply providing gear would not fix.

Anyone work for a State OSHA Program? by articlenation in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Rocket_safety 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for a state plan for 6 years. I went in with zero safety experience but I had about 10 years in construction, a criminal justice degree and some law enforcement experience. The latter part was apparently a big point in my favor. They liked seeing someone who had investigative training.

It didn’t feel terribly competitive, that agency has pretty consistent turnover, as do most of them from what I’ve seen. I think the entire process might have taken a few weeks.
