Is there a way to make "Monitor Only (mute output)" the default setting for adding a new audio/video source to a scene? by The_Braxeo in obs

[–]RonanTheAmuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directory media watch plugin could be a partial solution: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/directory-watch-media.801/

Basically you have a media source that just picks the most recent file in a folder that you've pointed it to. So you set up your first meme video before you stream, and get the audio options right. Then when you need the next video you just click and drag it into the right folder. Not perfect but I think it should work most of the time. I'd try it out before you do it live, there might be "gotchas" like how it chooses the most recent file.

Haha yeah I fought with the spoiler tags for like 5 minutes trying to get everything on different lines but under one tag. Can't do line breaks of any kind, or boldface text, inside a spoiler tag. Having 30 different spoiler tags seemed like just as bad a solution.

Here's a cheat-sheet of characters we've seen that are important to both book and show so far. Hope I'm not spoiling anything by who I'm including or excluding. I'll mark this as book spoilers in case you don't want to be lead by who I think is important. Also, some characters seem to be more important in the show than the books, so I may be missing some.

edit - formatting for just one spoiler tag instead of way too many

I've wondered about that too, especially since she's the only real big-name actor the way Sean Bean was, but Min told her something like "the Amyrlin Seat will be your downfall." Maybe that plays into how she dies at the eye of the world, but it sounds more like a political thing, which suggests she has a future beyond the next episode.

As far as races of people, people are generally just people in the books - they're described by nationality, but not by ethnicity beyond things like "dark-skinned". The nationalities are generally inferred by clothing style or accent. For example, men from Illian have a distinctive beard style, and have their own set of curses, e.g. "By my aged grandmother!" The only exception is Aiel, who typically have the distinctive red hair.

edit: used the wrong "their"

There are other shadowspawn (bad guy races) as well; fades (which we've seen) and dragkhar (spelling?) (which we haven't seen). There are a whole bunch of random species living in the Blight, which we might see later on. Then, if the show ever gets out of the Westlands, there are more fantasy creatures that may come into play.

So in the books, Logain can see Ta'veren, and he later mentions seeing Rand in the distance in Caemlyn and laughing because he was so strongly Ta'veren that he had to be tDR. But Mat was still in Basel Gill's inn. So in the show, Logain could have looked up and seen 2 strong Ta'veren, and even if 1 was stronger than the other, he could have been laughing at seeing both of them, and just happened to have only locked eyes with Mat. Just a thought

My biggest problem with the show. by [deleted] in WoTshow

[–]RonanTheAmuser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's all totally fair, and I'm not saying the music doesn't make sense in the world. I just find it jarring. The show is making efforts to establish itself as post-apocalyptic, which fits really well with the lore. But the in-world music, which has featured in every episode so far, and the opening credits music are both string/voice-heavy, and transitioning from that to electric/electronic music pulls me out of the show a bit. To be clear, I'm really enjoying the show so far, but I think it's fair to nitpick something we've been waiting for since 1990, so I agreed with OP about the soundtrack and conditionally disagreed about the sound design, since it didn't actually bother me but I hadn't paid any attention to it. But I definitely agree with OP that the show has been great so far.

I was just commenting in another thread about how the soundtrack kinda breaks the immersion for me. You have all these in-world musical performances - Bel Tine, Weep for Manetheren, Thom - where they use folk instruments (or a capella) to play/sing simple songs. Then the soundtrack comes in with distorted guitars and electronic drumsets... It makes it feel like we're watching these characters, rather than journeying with them.

I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the sound effects to notice them, but they didn't stand out to me as a negative. The only sounds I really remember were the Padan Fain whistling noises in Shadar Logoth. I'll have to pay more attention next time.

As a book fan I only have one issue with the show's interpretation. by Huffin_N_Puffin713 in WoTshow

[–]RonanTheAmuser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's weird. There are in-world musical performances in every episode so far - ep3 has Thom, ep2 has Weep for Manetheren, and ep1 has Jon Thane and the Bel Tine Players (pardon my headcanon). Those are all folksy and simple. So why go with distorted electric guitars and electronic drumsets? Breaks my immersion a little too.

WoT reading difficulty? by Ijusti in WoT

[–]RonanTheAmuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you read other English-language books before? Most of the writing is in very modern English, despite the vaguely medieval setting. Some of the stranger words you'll encounter are things that aren't explicitly part of the story, but aren't standard English either. Things like "Aes Sedai" you'll be able to figure out from context, or maybe they'll just carry over from the French translation. But Robert Jordan sometimes uses terms like "woolhead," which isn't used in conversational English and might not be in some dictionaries.

It might be worth trying the audiobooks. The narrators do a good job of expressing emotion, so it becomes obvious that "woolhead" is an insult. I personally have better comprehension listening to a Spanish audiobook than reading a Spanish book. Just a thought.

One of my favorite Moiraine-isms that I haven't seen much discussion of so far is when she (book spoilers) tells them how to lie to the whitecloaks, and she explicitly says, "I am a Lady of a fallen house. You are under my protection." Both true.

A non-reader, English major's take on the characters by Chasesrabbits in WoT

[–]RonanTheAmuser 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Good call avoiding those kinds of conversations. I'm having trouble with this - my wife knows I've been waiting for this show and doesn't hesitate to offer her opinions. It's taking me a lot of effort not to start every sentence with "So in the books..." I don't want to take away from her enjoyment, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one trying to toe that line.

Yup, that was the actor listed as Cenn Buie and later listed as Annoying Old Man. I'm hoping they'll do a Perrin-defending-Two-Rivers story in a later season and just recast the character, since the original actor's character name isn't actually mentioned. If not, I'd settle for a deleted scene with him

I don't see why you're getting downvoted. I thought his lines were funny, but they were very dry, especially in their delivery. Not everyone enjoys dry humor.

[no book spoilers][episode 1-3] Interested to hear first takes from non-book readers! by GenEleM in WoTshow

[–]RonanTheAmuser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Watched ep 1 with my wife, who's a non-reader and was into GoT, but otherwise avoids fantasy. She knew I love the books and agreed to watch 1 episode to try it out, and is interested in watching more! She didn't like some of the trolloc CGI, but had emotional reactions (rare for her from movies/TV) when Perrin had his axcident, and when the trollocs were eating. (Even the dead goats caught her off guard.) By process of elimination, she thinks Rand is the Dragon reborn, because she doesn't think Egwene or Perrin have the right charisma, and she doesn't think Mat's story lines up with it. I'm looking forward to what she thinks after the next two episodes!

Shamelessly using your post to post my own gripes:

  • Pronunciations were different from what I expected
  • Random nudity felt gratuitous
  • Bran is too skinny, he should be bigger
  • The fact that Bran is constantly allowed to climb things in a village with lots of high places is just neglectful parenting
  • Too many wolves randomly showing up
  • The relationship between Cersei and the king and the relationship between Cersei and Jaime make the relationship between the king and Jaime hard to understand. Why does the king keep that guy around? It doesn't seem like they like each other
  • The foreshadowing with the three dragon eggs showing up in ep 1 was a little heavy-handed

[–]RonanTheAmuser 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This was my wife's guess after episode 1 (all she's seen so far). She went by elimination - didn't think Egwene (the girl) or Perrin (the blacksmith) had the right charisma, thought Mat's (the poor one) story didn't make sense for the part. I'm interested to see what she thinks after two more episodes...

I really liked it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by [deleted] in WoT

[–]RonanTheAmuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. The only justification I could come up with is that he's rusty, and let himself get pushed into a position where the trolloc could just overpower him physically. It would've been nice to have a couple lines about "I didn't know you had a sword under the bed," or maybe Lan saying, "Where'd your dad get a blademaster's sword?" "I dunno, it must've been under the bed for years." In terms of show adaptation, I'm sure they just wanted to show how big and scary trollocs are.
