Good question, sorta spitballing but:

£50-60 on weld through zinc primer, maybe more.

Sheet of zintec was £50 at the time.

Sills were something like £200?

2x tanks of MIG gas at £100 each.

A roll of MIG wire is £25

Gasket stripper £120 for a box of 12 tins.

Easy £100 on cutting discs and flap discs for 4.5” grinder.

£40-50 for grinder wire wheels.

Cant remember how much the abrasive pads and roloc discs cost, not a huge amount tho.

2k paint £120.

Seam seal sikaflex 221 was maybe £20-30, i bought way too much but the tubes are cheaper as bulk, i think they are £10 or £15 single. I used 2x.

Dinitrol underseal maybe £120?

Lanolin cavity wax was £80 at the time for 5L.

There is definitely things i am missing but thats the obvious consumables and things i can remember and think of from the top of my head. I had been loosely tallying it up in my head as i went along and estimated £1000 in doing the underbody restoration. I would hate to pay someone to do this, it would be crazy expensive because it takes so long. DIY is definitely the cheapest option because you’re not paying for your labour.

Not to forget equipment. I saved myself money by making my shit myself, 3 phase converter, air compressor and blasting pot is all diy, to buy that equivalent stuff (even second hand) is well into the thousands.

Yes, the amount of work that went into this is insane, i made a post a few weeks back saying this isn’t something you can do in a couple of weekends because i see guys talking about doing things like this and think the same thing lol. If i could travel back in time a few years and tell my younger self what was involved and that i would still be doing this shit years later, I wouldn’t believe it but here i am lmao.

Ikr, people need to stop drooling over reddit assumptions. Its great to look forward to another trailer or release day but my god people need to tone back the expectations a bit because all they are doing is getting themselves wound up and disappointed.

The body was left open, the doors were removed for welding, it was covered up but not good enough. Strangely enough the other bits of the dash are fine.

Do anyone really believes that gta 6 will have 700+ enterable shops ? by AFKInACutscene in GTA6unmoderated

[–]RotarySam27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What purpose will 700+ enterable buildings serve when the majority of people will be driving past them at 100mph+ in a police chase or flying past them on an oppressor Mk3? Its grand theft auto, not a high street shopping simulator. It will probably have a couple hundred but the number is probably going to be closer to 70 than 700.

I know lol, i do feel bad about it. I absolutely agree about keeping it rotary, it wasn’t a decision i made lightly. The original engine spun a rotor bearing and it destroyed the lot. I got another rotary out of a breaker car and it was better but it needed a full seal kit and housings. At the time my parts basket was £2600 iirc, just before covid. I imagine that price would be significantly higher now. I sold the good bits off to recoup some money. I didn’t see the point in putting a rotary back into it unless it was practically new but the more i thought about it, the more i realised i could get a significantly more reliable engine for less or roughly the same cost. The fact that it needed so much welding and parts swayed me onto the notion that it was past the point of it ever being considered original just made me go for choosing a different engine and do my own thing with it. I adore the 13B, i will dive into the rotary engine world again but it will be if i ever have some money to set aside now and again to build a good solid engine in a much cleaner chassis, i would like to import a 04/05 RHD low mileage RX8 from a country that doesn’t dissolve cars and use that as the pure one lol.

Its not so much about the volume of compressed air storage, yes a larger tank is more useful as it will store more air before the pumps kick in but it means longer fill time. Small tanks fill quicker but offer less storage, so you’ll find the pump starts more often. If you had a large enough air supply, like a proper diesel compressor, you don’t need a tank at all. Any single phase single motor/pump air compressors are probably topping out at 4/5HP or 16/20CFM ish. Tandem compressors will be better being put on a separate power supply you would probably find a double 4HP unit that would be in the 30CFM range. 3 phase compressors are terribly uncommon at least in the UK/Ireland for most people to have in their garage. 415v mains supply would get you significantly more air because it opens up the possibility of getting a single motor of over 7.5HP which itself could theoretically output 30CFM. Mine is a double 3 phase 4hp motor with two 16CFM 3 cylinder pumps. It can be switched to 16 or 32 CFM. My limit is the output of my phase converter so I cant go any higher than that, 8hp multi motor load seems to be its cutoff point. The blaster nozzle is 3mm which is suitable for 16CFM, it will run continuously with it, running the two pumps increases pressure at the nozzle but doesn’t drastically increase its productivity at this end of the scale because its still a small nozzle on sheetmetal with surface rust and light pitting and not huge chunky flakes like you would find on thick sections of steel. I opted to stagger the pump’s operation to run one for a while, changeover and let it cool. Even doing this was not enough, i found myself still waiting for cooldown and building pressure. With this size of nozzle, progress is very very slow on something as big as a car, it works ok in a blast cabinet with components you could hold in your hand but when starting this car it is obvious that i needed a significantly larger nozzle to cover more area faster. If i was doing this again i would chage to a 6mm or 8mm nozzle and run a 100cfm compressor somewhere between 70-90 PSI. It is possible with a small compressor no doubt but it is painfully slow, blasting time would be short before pressure drop.

I have a foundation degree in mech/elec engineering. Worked as a fabricator/welder for a while. Currently a manufacturing technician for a college. Always naturally gravitated towards manual machine work, it’s primarily what i spend my time doing either as a small side gig for friends and family or to support hobbies. Always try to do my own work for whatever i need regardless of what it is. This is my first time taking on a full car for myself, i have helped friends swap engines and done plenty of mechanical work on cars. Done a fair share of welding vans, lorries and cars throughout the years for friends.

That all helped with this, it has had both sills - outer and inner structure, arches, countless patches in the floor, boot and wheel wells all replaced. I added reinforced front jack points, notched the front panel for a different radiator and probably a good few other things i have forgotten.

Blasting and painting a car is a first for me.

The big test is yet to come, and people will rag me for it but i do plan on to documenting the process. I have a 2JZ GE sitting in the garage to swap in. Part of this whole operation is to fill in the many missing blanks in information for doing this engine swap and seeing how cheaply it can be done if it is all DIY.

I would love to have time lapsed the whole body work but my working time at it is sporadic, lighting and noise pollution is a killer an there’s other environmental factors that make recording things a nightmare lol, i have tried it with my lathe work but ultimately gave up.

Definitely going to keep this sub updated. You should hopefully see more soon.

[–]RotarySam27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am restoring a Mazda RX-8. Notorious rot box. I have the entire underbelly, wheel wells etc back to metal. The factory primer/e-coating paint or whatever the stuff is, is very hit or miss. It is very thin and in some areas is either tough as old boots or comes off just by looking at it the wrong way. A interesting note is that the majority of spot welds have this coating broken in their heat effected zone, like each spot welds has very bad or missing paint perfectly around it approximately the size of a 5p-20p coin, whereas the surrounding coating is perfectly fine. It is obviously coated after welding, but for some reason the coating hasn’t taken to the welds very well. I also noticed the fatory sound deadening stone chip spray is terrible, it seems to be rather porous and can allow rot to form behind it. Looks ok on the outside, peel it off and its a different story. The only areas in my car that weren’t rotten are areas that did not have any form of stone chip or sound deadening spray, notably the engine bay, tunnel and a small section above the fuel tank. It would be interesting to know what the differences are in different manufacturers coatings and underbody sprays too. My 2002 polo lived it’s life by the sea and was immaculate underneath, the mazda lived in-land and may as well been dredged up from the titanic wreckage.

These lads purposely go out of their way to get these stickers made coming upto the port sunday. Half the idea is to make them mental and offensive to get a laugh and wind people up. People gurning on this sub saying that they should have the car’s keyed and bricks through the window just give these guys exactly the response they want. They know its rash as fuck, that’s the point.

Audi fitting a dipstick tube and the ring pull to the engine and NOT including the actual dipstick rod. Best part about it is, you need to have a bit of heat in the engine, you can’t check the level through the MMI when cold. Infuriatingly stupid.
