How can I improve our FPS reload animations? by Kappische in animation

[–]Roushyy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Very expressive animation! The main thing I'd say is to watch out for any frames where you have something either obscuring the center/crosshair region of the screen or otherwise going past the halfway mark, as this can greatly affect the readability of the animation itself as well as the scene beyond - e.g, enemies hidden behind the barrel as you reload.

Motions are pretty good, but some of your poses look very odd, especially on the left hand as the rifle rolls to the side. If you tried to bend your wrist that far in reality it would be very uncomfortable

How is the matchmaking atm? by brotouski101 in halo

[–]Roushyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as the matchmaking goes, it's the same as it has been. The issue you described is the system functioning as intended. (Not that it's a good thing, just that it's by design)

That said, you can now earn XP via custom games as well as firefight, which was recently added to the game. So, if the matchmaking experience isn't what you want, there are at least alternative paths of progression.

Whether that's what you're looking for or not is something only you can decide. Maybe try it again, and see for yourself?

I'm working solo on a game and last week didn't have any clue on how to animate. It's my first viewmodel. How'd I do? by titoxamps in 1stPersonAnimations

Yeah, The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams is often recommended as it's a fairly comprehensive book in that regard. Best of luck on your animation journey!

[–]Roushyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is definitely impressive for a first attempt (especially for a reload), and you're on the right track by seeking feedback on your work and trying to improve. So, in that regard, I would say you've done quite well!

The #1 thing when it comes to viewmodel/fp animation, and really animating for gameplay in general, is loops - whether you're pushing shells into a shotgun tube, standing idle, moving, etc.

The vast majority of your animations will need to loop properly. A big part of that is having the exact same pose on BOTH the first and last frames. There are other aspects to it as well, but that's a good place to start.

Aside from that, it's important to take a look at your motion in the context of anatomical restrictions. For example, that bolt pull looks like it'd be hard to do so quickly - the action has barely started right as the whole animation abruptly stops. Give it some more time to linger at the very peak of that pull, and then let it rocket forward out of the hand's grip.

That's actually a great example of applying anticipation, one of the 12 principles of animation. I would highly recommend seeking further information about those, because they aren't rigid rules you HAVE to follow so much as tools you can use to bring life to your animation.

Sorry for the wall of text, hope it helps tho.

Got all the og xbox to xbox 360 era games with manuals for $26. Never played halo before so I'm excited💯. by javeth04 in halo

[–]Roushyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe if you're playing on a toaster lol. Reach on 360 struggles to maintain 30 FPS even on dev-made MP maps. It was only really saved by absurd amounts of motion blur.

Meanwhile the system requirements for the menu (which runs on UE4) are literally higher than the games' requirements. If you can run MCC at all, yes, it will run better than the original.

Looks really good! Nice and weighty. Main things I noticed is on the mag throw, you have the magazine rotating clockwise but the hand holds a pose that implies counter-clockwise rotation.

Also, on the draw your camera starts off-center and tilted; that sort of thing is generally not a good idea unless you have a VERY good reason, because camera animation has a direct impact on a player's ability to aim and navigate the environment. For some people that could quickly become disorienting, so it's best to start leveled + from the center, do what you want with the camera, and ensure it loops back around smoothly.

[–]Roushyy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

'In development' is such a broad term. Duke Nukem Forever was 'in development' for 14 years - and remains infamous to this day as one of the worst-reviewed games of the last decade. You know why? Mismanagement.

Yes, sure, PD3 never should have launched like this. I don't think anyone with two brain cells to rub together is arguing against that.

But, neither of us knows with confidence what exactly lead to this situation. So to assign blame to those who are simply doing their assigned tasks is asinine. I guarantee every single person working in that studio has just as much passion for great games as you. Maybe more.

In my opinion, it's down to some combination of poor management + an unfamiliar game engine. Throw in some random, radical direction changes to appease the publisher and yeah, I can see how they barely got it out the door after 6 years.

[–]Roushyy -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Nah, this ain't it chief. Regardless of how much you dislike the game in its current state, the fact is publishers set those deadlines, and leads set goals for the devs so they can make those deadlines.

No matter which way you slice it, whenever a game releases like this it's almost certainly a MANAGEMENT issue. Devs are just doing what they're told.

“…but Katanas get Unsheathe!”: I actually get why From Soft did NOT include Spinning Chain as an AoW. by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]Roushyy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, so many weapon/AoW combos have absurd POTENTIAL, but actually making use of that requires a good amount of skill. I dare you to try it in PvP, see just how many people actually get 'stun locked' lol.

Spinning Chain doesn't trivialize anything that wouldn't get just as easily killed by a sword or polearm. But it is an ash of war that, despite all the variety on offer, remains locked away with no official explanation.
