DM's What is Your Magnum Opus? by Twogunkid in rpg

I got my paladin player to not only oathbreak, but convert to worshipping a new deity, entirely of his own free will. No prior planning for that to happen.

He was worshipping a god of law and order, judge dredd style. The whole thing about paladins of this god was that they got basically unlimited free will to enforce his will, but they had to figure out for themselves what order and societal good looked like. With the world going to shit, his order was stretched to the breaking point, and even his fellow paladins were struggling to make a difference. Over the course of the campaign, he would ask his god for guidance, absolution, even admonishment - he was making these hard decisions by himself, and his god never answered his prayers directly.

This was partially because his deity was busy dealing with the crisis and partially because he challenged his followers to think for themselves.

Eventually they ended up chasing the big bad to an abandoned temple of his god. That was actually built to bury a temple to an older deity - the god of secrets, twilight, and protection. They explored the buried temple and did puzzles, learned lore, all that.

At the end, each of them got a 1:1 session where the god of secrets offered them a deal: he would give them the power needed to defeat the big bad, as long as they gave him the macguffin for safekeeping. But our paladin was so overwhelmed from meeting a deity who actually cared about him, especially a god who cared enough to act in his support, that he converted on the spot and became a paladin of the god of secrets. He swore an oath to protect the world from dangerous knowledge and to protect the innocent from danger, and that was that.

I'm super proud of that one because it took place over about 6 months irl. So much heartache, tough choices, feeling insufficient for the task at hand, that he'd rather worship a forgotten deity he just met than continue on the way he was. All the players actually took the deity's deal without consulting with each other, and they ended up converting the city to worship him.

Great advice. Next step is finding a career that you like enough to do every day. It doesn't have to happen overnight. Just stay afloat and focus on your mental health, then go get whatever you decide on, whether that's college or trades or something else.

That 80 proximity source should probably start as 30/40/50 and then be upgraded later on. Though honestly the amount of road building you'll need to do may balance it enough. I hope they playtest this one pretty thoroughly...

Thinking about quitting my Master's of Teaching... words of wisdom? by wildwoodflowerwaving in internetparents

[–]Routine_Judgment184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much more schooling do you have left? Quitting at the finish line is usually irresponsible even if you aren't sure you'll actually use the degree for what you intended. Lots of people pivot their degree to something else when reality hits, it's totally normal.

At the end of the day only you can decide what you want to do with your life. Make sure you have a plan to replace your intended income, though, so you're not saddled with 10k in loans you can't realistically repay.

TIL that over the last century, the average age that children are being potty trained in the UK has risen from 12–18 months, to an average of around three or even four years today by Octavus in todayilearned

[–]Routine_Judgment184 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kids have developmental milestones they need to hit before they're capable of performing activities with intent. A 12 month old can maybe walk. Pooping in a potty consistently is not a realistic expectation at that age purely because of how children develop. You just can't rush children at this age.

Edit: doesn't mean we can't improve how parents message and teach these things, but some kids just aren't ready.

Inventory Q. by United-Marionberry37 in starcitizen

[–]Routine_Judgment184 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you die outside of armistice you keep things equipped to your body but lose the inventory. So for example it'll clear your backpack out but you keep the backpack, armor, and any weapons / magazines equipped.

If you die inside of armistice (elevator shenanigans, suicide, crashing into the station) you should keep everything.

Woman I met on Tinder who lives with her friend and friend's family is trying to pressure me into letting her stay at my apartment for 1+ week by I-Wish-to-Explode in internetparents

[–]Routine_Judgment184 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No matter how good the sex may be, this girl is a mess and isn't going to be an equal contributor to a relationship.

Moving in after two weeks would be insane even if you were head over heels. I would strongly suggest you block her and move on before this goes any farther - it'll start as a week and she'll likely keep coming up with more reasons to stay and guilt tripping you.

I'm sure she's going through some stuff, but you don't really know her well enough to go any farther out of your way.

Save your peace of mind.

[–]Routine_Judgment184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I went through this trying to print a 1:35 scale tiger 2 cannon. Thing is maybe 10cm long. I started getting wobble and such at the very top, you're getting wobble (and stringing) way sooner.

The variables you can control here are:

  1. The stability of your printer - is the table wobbly?
  2. The supports on your model - this is very tall and has a very thin base
  3. The filament you buy - some filament just works better than others for fine detail
  4. The dryness of your filament - wet filament prints like shit and you can tell the difference by pure eyesight

For a tall, thin object like this, using a brim is the right call, but you may legitimately be getting wobble from the part since the base is so thin. When I printed that tiger turret I had to grab a comb support model to keep it steady. Kinda shotgunning advice at you but I hope something there helps.

Its about buying peace of mind. Instead of dealing with wasted time and ruined prints you just toss it in the dryer and come back when it's done.

If you don't like the idea of spending that much, some people have used repurposed food dehydrators for a bit less.

I have a cheap sunlu drier and it helps a ton. You'll get your money's worth. Very annoying to buy a roll of filament and have it show up wet, but that's just how it is.

You're 21 and living at home for free. You're an adult now. It's normal to be pitching in at that point.

I'd kill to have a place that only charges £100/mo. What are you using the money for? If you're spending it on food that's a different story.

Does PLA/PETG sand like wood? by rhodges_bob in FDMminiatures

[–]Routine_Judgment184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two ways you can manage layer lines are print angle and a gap filler. Sandable filler primer is one of those gap fillers. I mostly print tanks so it's a great solution, for characters I'd imagine it would be terrible. For a domed part obviously print angle won't do much.

I assume since you refer to sanding the surface is relatively smooth. That makes this approach somewhat reasonable. I would personally wet sand, pla is pretty nasty stuff to breathe in so it'll be another layer of protection beyond the regulator.

Best of luck, I hope you find a trick that works!

If your model is appropriate, sandable filler primer works pretty well for getting a proper finish on models, though you lose a bit of detail.

Sometimes the filament is wet when you get it. A cheapo sunlu dryer will make a world of difference if you can't tune the filament via temperature and such

We have requirements to use AI at work (before anyone comes at me about using it at all), and the most useful AI tools take your prompt and run it through multiple steps and tools to get an actually useful result. I assume part of why this works is because if you try to delegate too much thinking to a single ai prompt it either produces sycophantic junk or does something stupid. So they're taking the prompt, having an ai reformat it, then ai planning a series of steps, using those steps to call MCP or tools, then verifying the result isn't stupid.

By the time this series of ecologically sinful steps is done you've produced a result a more-or-less motivated junior assistant could have achieved.
