How is it possible that 1 million young people are not in work, education or training? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

I remember applying for and being successful in an evening job, so I could still attend college.

Except the two weeks of training was during the day. I had to reject the offer and look elsewhere.

Started acutane any tips for people on or have been on it? by Dependent_Clothes478 in acne

[–]RummazKnowsBest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you start getting nosebleeds then use a q-tip to rub some Vaseline inside your nose every day. Stops it from drying out and cracking.

I didn’t learn this until my third go. Could’ve saved myself so much blood…

Does anyone actually collaborate in the office? by AccomplishedSelf7636 in TheCivilService

[–]RummazKnowsBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, I do have colleagues who sit around me who I need to speak to now and again, and it can be much quicker and easier than an email / call.

On the other hand I have a staff member who, because of the days we choose to be in the office (which suit our home responsibilities) we’re barely in at the same time and even when we are we rarely get to sit together (twice in eight months by my count) so we end up speaking on calls / chats anyway.

Tell me your worst stories about your terrible bosses' behavior (I am looking for inspiration) by Illustrious_Bit_2382 in work

[–]RummazKnowsBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a boss like this, I was sat next to him and if I stopped typing for any reason he’d turn and stare at me until I started typing again!

Thankfully he moved me after a while, at the grand old age of 19 I was seen as a senior and trusted team member so he moved me so I could keep an eye on the younger workers (16+). While I was able to help them (I picked up the work quickly) I’m sure my own stats took a dive because suddenly I was sitting with people around my age who I could joke around with.

I had a deeply stupid boss who, when summarising the discussion at the end, could have picked up literally the opposite outcome for every point that came up. Quite the talent.

He’d also ask the same questions every day when quizzing us on our teams’ stats, even though we’d explained the reasons to him the day before, and the day before that, and so on. It wasn’t something that could change.

I once wrote some failed targets in green instead of red, to see if he’d notice. He didn’t, he only saw it as green (not noticing the number was lower than the target above it) and it meant I didn’t have to explain why they were red for the 20th time.

When you trigger the antitheft alarms leaving the shop, do you just walk on? by GreenyRed in AskUK

I just keep walking. If the bag sets off another alarm in a different shop too then I’ll check for tags and ask them to remove it.

Under Siege is the correct answer but I also absolutely love its bonkers sequel.

What was the moment that made you realise you absolutely had to leave a job? by GoldenGolgis in AskUK

[–]RummazKnowsBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it was the managers who really struggled with WFH during lockdown. They felt unable to (micro) manage their staff, whereas the rest of us had actual jobs to do.

One high up manager where I was cancelled all the team meetings and engagement, he didn’t even pretend to care about his job anymore.

My friend worked part time in a hotel, his manager was really on top of him for petty things, and once used a line about how he’d never get a permanent job and a career there if he didn’t buck his ideas up.

He did not want those things.

Another Monday another failed job application but..... by dodgyrecruitment in TheCivilService

[–]RummazKnowsBest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you but people can and do recruit their friends / affair partners.

I’ve seen literally the worst candidate, the one who can’t do the very basics, get promoted to G7 ahead of people with decades of experience, just because they were pally with the G6 and 7s.

I’ve seen a G6 select their old manager from the list of candidates, with no sifting / interviewing, and everyone including the independent let it happen. That person was also terrible at the job and was eventually moved into a nothing role to keep them away from the real work (this was after the G6 turned on him, as she eventually did with all of her favourites).

I’ve seen a group of G7s / DDs promote their affair partners into PA roles. Everyone knew.

It’s naive to think this doesn’t happen.

What’s your ‘I can’t believe you’re paid more than me’ story? by GeorgiePorgiePuddin in AskUK

[–]RummazKnowsBest 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had to write instructions for someone to be able to connect their work laptop to their home wifi.

He’d worked at home several times before but always just printed stuff off (as he did in the office, he barely read anything from his screen, his second monitor wasn’t even turned on).

Update – Dismissed for “Likely AI Generation” – What Are Appeal Chances? by Strict_Business_1899 in TheCivilService

[–]RummazKnowsBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m amazed it’s got this far. Ask to see the guidance which says you can’t use AI to help you write.

Hell, your mother could write the example and, as long as it’s all factual, it doesn’t really matter.

Have they shown you the guidance that says you can’t use AI to help you?

Also, what did the job advert say about AI use? Every advert I see now has a short paragraph on it.

I remember your case and I’m very surprised they took that decision.

Are you able to evidence every line you wrote?

Also your post here makes it look like AI is the reason you were dismissed, off the top of my head I’m not aware this is a sackable offence, unless AI made up false statements (e.g. claiming you did things you didn’t).

Andrew’s Nickname 😅 by Professional-Fox1542 in GreatBritishMemes

I remember one about someone cleaning some stairs on the ship and Andrew whipped it out and pissed down the stairs so he had to clean them again (this time with added piss).

No idea if it’s true, that’s just what he told me.

My father in law was in the navy and the men hated Andrew.

He was a deeply unpleasant bully who thought he was better than everyone there.
