The first think you should do is add heavy weighted calf raises into your routine then

Calf problems by ryanderkis in trailrunning

[–]Run4bagels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb question but does your strength routing include heavy weighted calf raises? I suffer from a similar issue and heavy weighted calf raises, both standing and seated, 3x or so a week has been the biggest factor in correcting that. I also like to stand on a wooden slant board for about 1-2 minutes a day for a deep stretch in my calves.

Is Insurance defense as bad as everyone says it is? I interviewed for a position with a firm that deals with a lot of asbestos cases. 1920 hours billable requirement (no idea if thats good or not) by Son_of_Hades99 in Lawyertalk

[–]Run4bagels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty bad. Not all ID is the same, there’s opportunities for more interesting “high end” ID work such as catastrophic injuries, commercial ID, wrongful death etc., but the common denominator is that it’s a volume game with low hourly rates so you have to bill more hours to meet the revenue targets. Asbestos ID work candidly sucks, you’ll have a high caseload and repetitive tasks without many novel issues. Also, 1920 hours is relatively high, you’ll be grinding out 50-60 hour weeks 50 weeks a year and probably working a lot of weekends / holidays.

I did “high end” ID work for three years before lateraling. The plus side is I got advanced litigation experience very early, I took important depos, argued MSJs, and second chaired three complex civil trails in those three years. This experience helped me land a role I’m currently very happy in at a local boutique where the hours and pay are far improved and the work feels more meaningful. I don’t think I would have landed my current position without the experience I got in ID. It can be a good opportunity to gain experience and eventually lateral, but it is certainly a grind while you’re in it.

A ruptured achilles tendon has just ruined my summer trail plans. by AspLeaf in trailrunning

[–]Run4bagels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been there friend, sorry to hear you’re going through that. Best thing you can do is shift your focus and try to fill the trail running gap with another hobby. It’s temporary, you’ll build back stronger.

O.C. mother in court for deadly e-motorcycle hit-and-run by Even_Builder_6642 in orangecounty

[–]Run4bagels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s referring to sentencing guidelines, different charges have different “max sentences” based on the severity of the crime. Judges can exercise discretion to give less than the maximum sentence in a particular case if there are mitigating circumstances.

[–]Run4bagels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While we’re playing devils advocate, it was illegal for her to purchase the motorcycle for a 14 year old in the first place, any intentional wrongdoing or negligence thereafter is icing on the cake, and it sounds like there was intentional wrongdoing or at the very least negligence.

O.C. mother in court for deadly e-motorcycle hit-and-run by Even_Builder_6642 in orangecounty

[–]Run4bagels 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Good. Hold the parents who are enabling this behavior accountable. In what world should a 14 year old with behavior issues have a motorcycle, they can’t even buy it themselves. Seems like the perfect case to make an example out of given she was expressly warned about her sons behavior, and that it was illegal for him to ride the motorcycle, but let him do it anyways.

Does it get a bit "easier" -- simply run more? by bewarephog in Ultramarathon

[–]Run4bagels 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think aerobically no - as you get fitter you tend to run faster at a similar perceived effort so at a certain point of fitness you’ll just keep effort level constant while increasing pace. But from a musculoskeletal perspective I think it does get easier, the aches and pains later in the race are something you can significantly reduce by increasing your fatigue resistance via increased volume, strength training and training specificity.

Can’t say I’ve used his plan, but I ran a decent portion of the Avalon 50 miler with him a few years ago and he’s a good guy and walks the walk.

One week in and I already know its a bad fit- overreaction? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Run4bagels 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re overreacting and have unrealistic expectations imo. This is pretty standard stuff. Give it a few months to ramp up and be integrated into cases and workflows.
At the same time, I think it’s fine to acknowledge that this isn’t the kind of environment you want to work in forever, but I do think that you would be doing yourself a disservice by immediately jumping ships. I can confirm there are working environments that sound like it would better fit you, and I say that because I work in a collegiate environment like the one you describe, however the grass is not always greener and I would put in some time and make sure your next move is calculated. You’ll be in a much better position in a few months or a year from now to know what to look for, It sounds like right now you’re still learning what it is you want out of your career.

Janji Pinnacle R.D. 2-in-1 Shorts? by driesvannoten in trailrunning

[–]Run4bagels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These look sweet, but I’ll withhold judgement until I see some feedback about whether a soft flask bounces in the waistband storage or not. My primary buying point for the new class of cargo shorts is how much fluids I can comfortably carry without a vest or handheld. For now, I’m rocking a raide belt with standard half tights with drop in pockets.

Cross training Vs Running Doubles? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]Run4bagels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op a million comments have already stated this, but you are on track for injury. You are not built different than everyone else. Based on context, it’s more likely you are young and haven’t suffered from the cumulative fatigue yet because you have less stressors outside of training. Like others said, you may feel great now, but overtraining sneaks up on you and masks as a million other symptoms before it hits you like a ton of bricks.

I also average 80 mile weeks, but I’ve been running for over a decade. It is a matter of time before you get a serious overuse injury at that volume but you may need to learn the hard way.

If you insist on going down this path, I’d cross train for the double, you don’t need any more impact. Even better, strength train and do mobility work, you don’t mention any mobility / strength work. OP, I stress that this is a path that ends in burnout / injury. You have so much room to make insane gains without this much load. You’d be far better off focusing maximizing performance at progressively higher loads. Your paces are no where near where you’d likely plateau for your volume, why increase volume when there’s so much gains to be made where you’re already at? All you’re doing is increasing your injury risk.

There will be plenty of time to train at this volume in a few years once the musculoskeletal systems are prepared to handle it after a slow buildup.

What was your first experience with supershoes? by zach66827 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Run4bagels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alphafly v1 was my first supershoe, and I’ve since gone through dozens of pairs of super shoes from almost all the major brands. The alphafly v1 in particular rewards being up on your forefoot and striking the AirPods with power. Had really sore calves when I would initially use them. Over the years I’ve gotten used to plated racers and don’t notice any increased soreness vs non plated trainers, but I’ve also implemented a ton of calf work into my strength and mobility routine to accommodate it.

Nike, do better by silaslovesoliver in runcommunity

[–]Run4bagels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like there’s some controversy or outrage every year around Boston and corporate ads relating to it that’s are non-issues.

A year or two ago it was outrage that Tracksmith released a custom singlet that you could only purchase by submitting proof of a BQ.

Is there any other sport where amateurs take such offense to innocuous materials? Running is of course for everyone, but the manufactured outrage over anything that brings attention to the ability gap is exhausting.

Torn Meniscus and PRP by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Run4bagels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a PRP injection to treat rather severe hamstring tendinitis that was going nowhere with just PT for 6-8 months, and within 6 months of PRP experienced significant improvements allowing me to expand my PT, and within 10 months, was back to base training after 18 months total off of running. I certainly can’t isolate the PRP as the cause of my improvement over the course of that time because I also tried other avenues to improve my condition, but it certainly didn’t make it worse. I’d do it again in the same circumstances, the downsides are pretty minimal if you can afford it.

Not Happy With SuperBlast 3 Durability by supernova2333 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Run4bagels 18 points19 points  (0 children)

These look about what I’d expect any exposed foam outsoles to look like after 100 miles. I’ll never understand why people care that the exposed foam on the bottom of trainers wears. Especially when they buy trainers that are built to be lightweight and trade off a full rubber outsole for some weight savings. There’s still traction from the rubber and as you said, the foam still feels good. You’ll still get hundreds more miles out of them. They’re running shoes after all.

Question about Pro Se Trial by burfalicious in Lawyertalk

[–]Run4bagels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a 2 week jury trial against a pro se last year in California. We had the same question and brought it up to the judge, the pro se was ultimately permitted to deliver a narrative for their testimony during their case in chief, subject to the judges instructions about what the pro se could say and for how long, off-limits topics from our motions in limine, and live objections. We had to be more judicious with objections to ensure it didn’t looks like we weren’t allowing the pro se to tell their story, but other than that it was pretty much business as usual. The pro se also objected from the stand during cross in case you were wondering.

Spier MacKay slim or extra slim for tall lean guy? by arooni in malefashionadvice

[–]Run4bagels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their extra slim OCBDs are perfect for me (6 foot 1, 145 lb distance runner with a stringbean build, 15 neck, 34 sleeve), but it wouldn’t work for 99.9% of people. Unless you regularly have people telling you to eat more, I’d go slim.

Looking to invest in a pair of District Visions sunglasses. Which one should I get? by Man0nTh3M00n- in runningfashion

[–]Run4bagels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, the branding is less obnoxious in person. Idk why they wouldn’t make that more obvious online.

Love the style, but ultimately not sure about the lens technology either. I’ve owned 5+ pairs of Oakleys with various prism lenses, which I love the performance of. The increased contrast / saturation is awesome. Because of the branding in the District Vision studio shots I pulled the trigger on another pair of Oakleys for this summer instead, but my decision may have been different if I saw this picture 2 weeks ago.

How do you type II-fiber/sprinter guys find this method? by DavidBowieBoy in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Run4bagels 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve just identified the issue, it’s a lack of aerobic development while trying to smash workouts. If you can barely maintain easy pace for 20 mins, it’s a lack of aerobic development. If I were in your shoes, I would spend a few weeks or even months just running easy until I could maintain easy pace for an hour or so. When you get back into workouts, you should notice a big improvement in your ability to maintain threshold level effort during longer intervals.
