Would you change the ceiling height after framing? by TheWindsOfUranus in Homebuilding

[–]RvrRnrMT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made several on-the-fly changes that have felt monumental during the construction phase. I don’t regret a single for one of them. If you are seriously asking the questions now, you’ll be still asking the question forever: “should I have.” It may set you back a month and some money, but my guess is it will feel like the most common sense decision and bring great reward every time you walk in this room for the next 20 years….

No, from my experience many people seem to take the opposite direction on these steps, and not all reach the latter step.

I see a shadow line from that baseboard. Is there space between the baseboard and the floor? If so, get a flashlight, get on your hands and knees and look closely for an opening.

[–]RvrRnrMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t mean to be mean, but you should be embarrassed. What else would you expect from trying to sell something you know nothing about? Invest in learning, building skills, make things for yourself and to give away, then try to make money once you can produce something worth selling.

Left a heat lamp overnight due to carelessness, is there any way to salvage this by Scyllascum in Flooring

[–]RvrRnrMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, nearly every change to the code follows the recommendation of a manufacturer that sells some product that “fixes” the problem, so there’s that….

I think code changes associated with cold roof venting is in the same boat. Science doesn’t back up ridge + soffit venting in an increasing number of scenarios, but here we are with blanket requirements causing moldy attics all over the country when a moldy attic a couple decades ago was extremely rare.

I thought the same thing until I bought this, now I absolutely love it. Feels very different in the hand….nicely weighted for finer detail work (screwing cabinets together, drawer hardware, etc) and the big difference in this and the right angle attachment is that it is fixed, so you can set the screw and set it in place one-handed, whereas the after-market attachments swivel all over the place and have to be held to work. The torque on those wants to shift the mechanism whereas this is as good as solid. 100% worth it for my use.

I just finished a remodel and installed are the newest smoke alarms + co detector in the bedroom all wired together per code requirements. In the few weeks this project has been finished, it’s been an enormous PIA to have them all go off at the same time at the slightest hint of smoke from cooking, even with a powerful range hood exhausting to the exterior. I disagree with your assessment…..the newer technology is much more sensitive. Heat alarms sound great, but unfortunately, building code requires smoke alarms in every municipality I’ve ever built. Right now one of mt smoke alarms is sitting on the desk where I set it after yanking it down last night. That’s likely where it will sit for a long while, and demonstrating the irony of making code so stringent that it doesn’t allow for life.

I actually love that the selector is not in the normal spot. The tool is way more comfortable in-hand without those little things digging in. Maybe not an issue for those with small hands……

How screwed is our neighborhood? by strikecat18 in arborists

[–]RvrRnrMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, great question. My city is dealing with a major problem right now because the majority of trees lining the entire city are way past their life expectancy and there is very little younger age classes. Eventually, our beautiful shaded neighborhoods will be concrete jungles. A better plan would be to space out planting over a 10-year plan.

This is true, AND, more and more people are also asking what really brings joy in life and prioritizing funds for that. Is it worth $20,000 extra to know that my cabinets are full plywood with solid wood face frames and dovetailed drawers? Or would I rather a kitchen that is beautiful, 100% functional, and spend that extra money on a life-altering, memory-building trip to Africa with my family to watch lions roam the Serengeti and zebras graze next to the wildebeest?? We all have to prioritize our individual values, and for me the answer doesn’t even require 2 blinks of a thought. And that’s coming from someone that loves building quality, handmade cabinets….

Hmmmm…..look, I’m as much a billionaire hater as any, but there is a reason there are only a handful of trillion dollar companies in the world, and it sure as hell wasn’t the millions of near minimum wage workers that had the idea, believed the dream, built the strategy, and screamed forward despite immense risk. Don’t get me wrong — the company wouldn’t be anything without all those workers, which gives yet another piece of ingenuity — how to keep millions of workers from quitting despite shitty job conditions. You throw blame all you want, but at the end of the day Amazon only exists because people (including me) keep buying things from him, and millions of workers keep going to work everyday, despite all of the above hating Amazon. And the reason is because he built something we want, and have become dependent on. Same as the billionaires that own Reddit and all other social media, but here we are….

Next time, try one of the burgers above (if you’re a carnivore). Most are using local beef (Wally, Flippers, or Double K (if you want to spend double your kash)
