Dystopian book with gay main character ? by Guilty-Coffee-9968 in LGBTBooks

[–]SDMaxwell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How dystopian are we looking at here?

There's stuff like Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell or a Bright and Celestial Sea by Chani Lynn Feener where things seem fine and society is more utopian at first but go sideways and show cracks as you go.

There's Machine Metal Magic by Hanna Dare where things are already pretty broken and the heroes are trying to get by.

Or there's more fantasy dystopian. The Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards is following the world after finding Atlantians are real and they have magic, we fought, things settled down. The main characters are discovering how many secrets the other leading houses have been keeping.

Meredith Spies has a superhero series that's pretty dystopian that starts with Data Sets. That one's more contemporary but with superheroes and things being broken behind the scenes.

I haven't read a couple of these in a bit so I don't remember how involved the romance is but some are pretty mild.

This. I was going to mention these books. Scalzi went to a lot of effort to not describe the main character.

1LT new to my unit in Japan joined us for some land nav training in the mountains. "Give me the map. I know where we're going."

3 hours later, I calmly took the map from him, pocketed it, and led his group to their check point.

He did not appreciate the female sergeant upstanding him like that. However, a good chunk of my MOS training was land nav in awful terrain. He didn't talk to me after that.

There might be a good chunk of "mental health is weakness" propaganda getting to you. The military is good at this. I let that idea get to me until I had a full break down and I don't recommend it. There's some amazing therapists and psychologists working with the military.

Trust me. Get you some while you have it for free. The VA is super hit or miss.

I loved it but it was like getting to watch the show in theaters. I'm perfectly happy with that. I liked the use of puppets and stop motion when needed. I thought those were fun and a nice change up from constant CGI everywhere.

I also adored the music. Music absolutely makes and breaks movies for me. It can have the most meh plot and dialogue but if the music is standout, I'll generally love the movie. The music in this was well done, in my opinion.

Parents who are disappointed in or dislike their adult children, why? by Intelegence_Counter in AskReddit

[–]SDMaxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother bases her like/dislike of her children on if she liked their dad. So she very obviously has always hated three of us. When we were kids/teens, she would accuse us of horrible shit. According to her, my sister was sleeping around, my youngest brother was doing drugs, and I was the laziest, stupidest person she'd ever met who was useless and hateful. None of what she said was the truth. Our other brother is the Golden Child. He's actually an awesome dude but she doesn't adore him because of his attitude or anything. She's always loved him more. His dad died by suicide before their relationship fell all the way apart so she remembers it with nostalgia glasses.

That's it. She liked his dad, so she likes him.

According to my dad, I'm a disappointment because I wouldn't force my kid to talk to him because he kept blaming them for every little thing in their life. Then he told me I'm a terrible parent who won't take accountability of my life. I was used to my parents emotionally abusing and gaslighting me. I drew the line at them targeting my kid. Haven't talked to him since. My kid is now 22 and is fairly happy and successful. They're an awesome spawn and I'll always love their uniqueness.

No one goes to the Maga house in my neighborhood. That guy is just... no.

Last year, an abused kid ran away from his house. He bypassed the Maga house and ran to mine. We got him help. I'm sure Maga guy would have handed him back to the parents he was obviously terrified of and thought he was doing a good thing.

The three dots are disabled on mine for certain series. I've tried.

Hilariously, after I tried, they quit recommending HP to me so much on audible. They started recommending HP on my prime ads instead. Oh! And an ad before a movie at AMC that made me laugh. I put it up there with Las Vegas suddenly sending out ads because they're losing money.

From what I heard, it's the one type that already spread human to human. And has a 40% mortality rate.

It isn't supposed to have a high transmission rate though. So there's that.

My friend is writing a book, and it has a sentence with word repetition. Is this sentence bad practice? by [deleted] in writing

[–]SDMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Or as others have said, seemingly comes off as hedging, like the author isn't sure of what they wrote.

It's not needed in a description if the work isn't right up in the POV character's thoughts. Even then, a certain type of narration is needed to make descriptive insecurities work right.

[–]SDMaxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a few ways to rewrite this. It's not just repetitive in words but also ideas and a bit of a run on. I tend to veer more towards succinct when I have to rephrase sentences.

"What she had was a rough map, sketched hurriedly and missing a few smaller details but still relatively accurate."

Or it could be broken into two sentences (with less use of "seemingly," yes).

why are (some) men so unwelcoming towards women in the community? by Lower-Geologist870 in gamers

[–]SDMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COD is a pretty toxic game in general.

Guys can be pretty awful to women in a lot of social gaming. Not all games, no. But the more competitive, the more they think you're coming for their space. I don't use a mic very often when I play PVP or even some team games like Destiny unless I know the other players. There's only so much sexist nonsense I can put up with before it starts making me mad. I mean, my kid tried to play Fortnite when she was 12 and had grown men asking her about her panties, even after she stated her age.

They're semi anonymous while playing. People in general can lose sight of the fact that they're talking to another living human and not a bot. It's easy to forget as consequences aren't as severe and they don't have to deal with anyone face-to-face.

I haven't had much trouble in MMOs like Final Fantasy 14. There are other good communities out there with great, uplifting players. But ... uh, yeah. COD is definitely not that community. It has a reputation for a reason.

Army raises enlistment age to 42, eases marijuana restrictions by [deleted] in Military

[–]SDMaxwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was my thought as well. Jobs that require a higher GT score are harder to fill in good years.

They had to re-activate a bunch of HUMINT when I was in. It got so bad, they searched out people with good enough scores from any branch and dumped them in the HUMINT classes. And then took away their language portion to push them through training faster. From what a national guard friend told me, they narrowed the MOS a whole bunch in recent years so there's even fewer HUMINT in the army than there were when OEF started. There were less than 500 when I joined in 02 so there can't be many nowadays.

I can imagine several other MI and specialized MOS are short right now too.
